England boss Gareth Southgate is set to make big changes to his squad for the Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland.

Gareth Southgate has angered England supporters after reports emerged Kieran Trippier will start over Trent Alexander-Arnold in a back five against Switzerland.

The Three Lions made it through to the quarter-finals of the Euros in dramatic fashion with their extra-time victory over Slovakia last week.

England were just seconds from being dumped out of the competition before Jude Bellingham's overhead kick prolonged their stay in the competition and Harry Kane won the match for them in extra time.

It was yet another under-par performance from an England side that were heavily favoured to go all the way in Germany before the tournament.

Southgate now appears likely to make some big changes to his starting line-up when they face Switzerland this evening.

It's been reported that the England boss will revert to a back three with Bukayo Saka and Trippier playing as wing backs on either side.

Kobbie Mainoo and Declan Rice will supposedly start in midfield with both Bellingham and Phil Foden playing further forward behind Kane.

It's a bold move from the England boss to make such a drastic formation change midway through the competition.

But news of Trippier potentially starting ahead of Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold on the right wing hasn't gone down well with some fans.

One supporter fumed: "Southgate needs sacking asap."

Another moaned: "Sorry this is absolutely insane. Trippier over Trent Alexander-Arnold at right wing-back?!"

A third message read: "If Trent can’t get into an England side in his best position over the likes of Trippier he should literally withdraw from England duty under this current manager. No one with half a brain could blame him . He’s being treated like an inconvenient problem."

One other person said: "If you pick Trippier ahead of Alexander-Arnold at wingback, where Trent has even less responsibility defensively and more licence offensively, then you should be immediately sacked for gross stupidity."

Another posted: "If Southgate goes with 3 at the back tomorrow and then plays Trippier at WB instead of Trent then he should be sacked the second he announces the team!"

Trippier has started all four of England's game at the Euros so far on the left side of defence.

Southgate was hopeful that Manchester United's Luke Shaw would be fit in the latter stages of the tournament to play at left-back.

It doesn't appear as though Shaw is fit enough to start just yet, but Southgate has suggested he could feature off the bench against Switzerland.

“With Luke we initially thought third group game, first knockout game,” he said.

“That then looked like it might accelerate a bit, but we probably ended up sort of in the territory we thought we might be and given we had 26 we were happy to take that risk.

“We feel he can play a part now, and we're still focused on being here for another 10 days. How much that part can be, who knows?

“But as we've seen in the tournament with the impact our substitutions have made, then, you know, five minutes, 30 minutes, 90 minutes, could be critical at any point. I'm pleased we've got him here because he's unique in terms of the attributes he's got for the position that he plays.”
