GCERF Marks Ten Years!

GCERF was launched on September 9, 2014 as the first multilateral pooled fund to support local, community-level initiatives working to build resilience against violent extremism around the world. Today, a decade later and with more than USD 100 million committed, the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund remains the only global grant-making organisation providing core funding to organisations in fragile and conflict-affected states and others where the risk of violent extremism is highest.

Over the past decade, the global landscape of extremist interests has shifted dramatically, with the concentration of extremist threats increasing in the ‘Global South’, while it has largely waned in ‘Global North’ countries. Working intensively in these settings, GCERF has gained unique insights into the grievances that lead to violent extremism, and an array of targeted, innovative approaches, that are narrowing the space for extremist ideas to flourish in communities and societies.

With expert staff managing grants and fostering knowledge-sharing across 23 countries, GCERF is catalysing long-term community-level responses which will be sustainable for years to come. Often, these efforts are taking place in settings not reached by any other support for prevention of violent extremism.

To mark our first ten years, GCERF is proud to share ten of the unique insights gained over the past decade, and we congratulate more than 360 grantee partners around the world, working to make their communities and societies safer and more peaceful.

Local Partners

The Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF) is the only global fund to prevent violent extremism.

We connect local communities to global resources, supporting grassroots initiatives that are typically out of reach for international donors. We strengthen community resilience by supporting local initiatives to address the drivers of violent extremism.

In the last 10 years, our programmes have directly engaged around 4 million individuals, strengthening their resilience against violent extremism and providing hope and better opportunities for a more prosperous future.
