January's Hottest New Romances

Posted by Cybil on December 31, 2021

Some people love books. Some people fall in love. And some people love books about falling in love. Every month our team sorts through the new romance books and sees how early readers are responding. We use this information to curate a list of soon-to-be-beloved favorites.

New in January: An ex-con looks for redemption in Colleen Hoover’s Reminders of Him. Rebellious magic users work out their authority issues in Elizabeth BassA Letter to Three Witches. And a TV meteorologist faces down a stormy situation in Rachel Lynn Solomon’s Weather Girl. Also: Nonbinary chefs, desperate bridesmaids, and bi-curious noblemen.

Add what catches your fancy to your Want to Read shelf and let us know what you're reading and recommending in the comments.

Among friends and family, tech millionaire Vanessa Noble is famous for her List–a long checklist of requirements used to screen any man she considers dating. Khalil Sarda owns a chain of barbershops in Detroit and a case of clinical depression that he won’t acknowledge. Can these two help one another? Author Gia de Cadenet’s Getting His Game Back is earning praise for its empathetic approach to mental health–and its decidedly hot take on interracial romance.

Irrepressible genre surfer Colleen Hoover is back with a contemporary romance about first impressions, second chances, and four-year-old little girls. After a tragic mistake leads to a stretch in prison, Kenna Rowan just wants to do right by her young daughter. The only person that isn’t icing her out is local bar owner Ledger Ward, who knows a little something himself about regret and redemption. Hoover’s take on the healing power of love looks like one of the brightest books of the young new year.

Declaring your status as a nonbinary person is never easy, but London Parker takes things to another level when they explain their pronoun situation on national television. Anita Kelly’s debut rom-com follows London and fellow contestant Dahlia Woodson as they try to find love during the taping of the popular reality competition show Chef’s Special. This is a seriously advanced romantic maneuver, readers. Don’t try it at home.

Gwen Engels has problems. As a talented witch under a long-standing magical prohibition, she’s not allowed to practice the craft. Meanwhile, a mysterious letter has her wondering if she can trust her scientist boyfriend, currently out of town on a beetle-hunting expedition. Or is he? Do Gwen and her cousins dare to take a stand against the Grand Council of Witches? Elizabeth Bass’ romantic comedy also features enchanted cupcakes, so bear that in mind.

Canadian author Sophie Sullivan (Ten Rules for Faking It) rings in the new year with the story of Grace Travis, proud new owner of a fixer-upper beach house. Grace’s next-door neighbor could be trouble, though. Noah Jansen has plans to expand his own house and he wants to take over Grace’s property. As the feud heats up, Grace and Noah find they’re less interested in the feuding and more into that heating-up part.

If you like your romance stories with a twist of meta, consider The Roughest Draft, a story about fictional romance authors involved in a personal and professional partnership. The twist? The book is written by a pair of real-life romance authors involved in a personal and professional partnership. Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka bring you the story of Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen. You’ll have to figure it out from there.

The new romantic comedy from Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of The Ex Talk, finds sunny meteorologist Ari Abrams playing relationship counselor with her boss, legendary TV weatherwoman Torrance Hale. Shy sports reporter Russell Barringer offers to lend a hand, but when Russ and Ari get together, everybody starts getting the feels. If you’ve ever wondered on what really goes on behind those nightly newscasts, here’s your chance to imagine some interesting pairings.

Here’s a tricky one: Valentine Layton, the esteemed Duke of Malvern, is expected to marry the flighty Miss Arabella Tarleton. Family obligations, you see. But when Miss Arabella rejects his proposal, Valentine finds himself developing feelings for Arabella’s twin. More specifically, her twin brother. Alexis Hall’s innovative historical romance imagines one man’s dilemma when he must rethink everything he thought he knew about love.

Doing things out of spite is usually a bad idea, but sometimes an idea comes along that’s too good to pass up. That’s the case with Dani Porter, whose ex cheated on her with the realtor of their dream house. Dani’s plan? Build a rowdy vacation rental house right next door. But when Dani starts working with handsome architect Wyatt Montego, several bonus opportunities present themselves. Anna E. Collins debut rom-com is recommended for fans of Emily Henry and like-minded writers.

Zoey Marks has been named a bridesmaid in three different weddings. In each case, the wedding was called off. Zoey is now oh-for-three and seriously worried that her skepticism is rubbing off on everyone she knows. So when Zoey is invited to a romantic wedding in Ireland, she’s determined to make everything work this time–even if it means facing her own issues of matrimonial ambivalence.

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready
Just finished an arc & now working on a review. Stumbled upon on this on netgalley. Sarah Ready is completely new to me, but the cover made me curious. Turns out, it was so unexpectedly good.
