Top New Reader-Recommended Romances for March

Posted by Sharon on March 1, 2023

Some people love books. Some people fall in love. And some people love books about falling in love. Every month our team sorts through the new romance books and sees how early readers are responding via their Want to Read shelves and initial reviews. We use this information to curate a list of soon-to-be-beloved favorites.

New in March: Trish Doller writes of cartographer love in Off the Map. Lex Croucher finds Regency-era queer romance in Infamous. And Diana Biller visits 1870s Vienna in Hotel of Secrets. Also in the mix this month: notorious smugglers, horny audiophiles, and a set of airport-themed novellas.

Add what catches your fancy to your Want to Read shelf and let us know what you're reading and recommending in the comments.

Book number two in her Mr. Wrong Number series finds author Lynn Painter back in the rom-com game with a friendly wager of a story. After a rather disastrous hookup, Jack and Hallie decide to help one another play the dating game with others—arranging prospects and alibis and plan-B rescues. But when they agree to be fake dates for a wedding, old feelings percolate once again. When at first you don’t succeed….

From the news-you-can-use department, author Sarah Hawley provides an instructional parable on what to do if you ever accidentally summon a soul-devouring but oddly endearing demon. As a witch, Mariel is quite powerful but largely disinterested in magic. She’d rather be baking, really. Ozroth the Ruthless, meanwhile, is in the business of collecting human souls—but hey, what you do isn’t what you are. Can these crazy kids make it work?

Set in the lovely environs of Ireland, Trish Doller’s latest installment of her Beck Sisters series zooms in on dedicated nomad Carla Black. Carla has been on the road for nearly a decade, in her vintage Jeep Wrangler, and perfectly content. One fine day, she meets cartographer Eamon Sullivan, who provides a different kind of mapmaking experience. Off the Map is recommended for anyone who likes thoughtful contemporary romance, the Emerald Isle, and/or road trip stories.

From the historical rom-com shelf, Infamous blends queer romance with Regency-era intrigue as two friends, besties from childhood, navigate the world of impending adulthood. Twenty-something writer Edith 'Eddie' Miller and her lifelong friend Rose are used to doing everything together. But the script gets flipped when they’re invited to a Gothic estate for a rollicking party with eccentrics, poets, and assorted artistic hedonists.

It’s a wild idea, all right. Bookstore owner Gigi Rutherford has fallen in love with a voice—specifically, the narrator on her most recent audiobook. Following a wild impulse, she signs on to a ten-day bus tour through the English countryside, led by her auditory crush. That’s when things go haywire. This latest rom-com from author and Canadian TV personality Chantel Guertin (Instamom) is recommended for fans of Christina Lauren and Sophie Kinsella.

Book three in the Of Flesh & Bone series brings readers back to Mistfell and the shadow of the Veil that separates the land of Faerie. The Fae like their games, and their games can be rough. Heads up that this is indeed a dark fantasy romance! Author Harper L. Woods is always careful to note that her books feature mature language, graphic violence, and explicit content. But if that’s your thing, welcome to the Wild Hunt!

This collection of romance novellas features three stories set in that liminal people-watching space we call the modern municipal airport. On tap: A one-night stand leads to interesting consequences for two professional rivals. An airport pet groomer finds love via the frequent-flier program. And a lost love letter leads to confessions in the airport candy shop. Denise Williams (How to Fail at Flirting) has clearly written the perfect book for your next layover. So to speak.

What’s a good book to pair with a collection of airport novellas? The Hotel of Secrets, naturally. Readers will want to switch gears for this historical romance, set in 1870s Vienna, which folds in era-specific political intrigue and a few dangerous characters—secret agents, masked assassins, this sort of thing. Author Diana Biller (The Widow of Rose House) invites readers to the fabulous Hotel Wallner, home of handsome spies and beautiful hotelkeepers.

Sir Gareth Inglis has just inherited a manor house on the remote and dangerous Romney Marsh, where smugglers and cutthroats ply their trade. In fact, notorious rogue Joss Doomsday makes his living on these waters. When a passionate and supposedly anonymous affair comes to light, the two gentlemen are forced to deal with one another. Directly. This Regency-era MM queer romance from author K.J. Charles is being described as Bridgerton meets Poldark. Sign us up!

Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail should be enough of an adventure in and of itself for quietly nerdy Alexei Lebedev. After all, there are rattlesnakes! But throw in a dashing stranger and suddenly Alexei's heart is beating faster for entirely off-trail reasons. Author Anita Kelly (Love & Other Disasters) calls their second novel "Wild, But Make It Gay," which is both a very compelling and very accurate description.

Saloni Porwal Gigi Listening is fantastic, and I loved it. No regrets about reading that! Grab the audiobook if you can coz it adds so much to the story and the narrator is perfect.
Off the Map was a big let down, though. I didn't like it one bit.
