The Past Year's Biggest Mystery & Thriller Hits

Posted by Cybil on September 17, 2024

If you’re in the market for a good mystery/thriller read to kick off the autumn reading season, we have some happy news.

We’ve gathered below the most popular mysteries and thrillers of the past year, according to your fellow Goodreads members. By “last year” we mean the previous 12 months, going back to last September. As always, we’ve determined the lineup by tracking ratings, reviews, and which books are ending up on members’ Read, Currently Reading, and Want to Read shelves.

Lots of cool story premises in this particular batch. Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods, for instance, details a mysterious disappearance at an Adirondacks summer camp in 1975—and a nearly identical disappearance 14 years earlier. Author Emiko Jean, meanwhile, profiles a baffling reappearance in The Return of Ellie Black.

Fans of emergent 21st-century media formats might like Amy Tinera’s Listen for the Lie, which proceeds from the investigations of a true-crime podcast. Deceit plays a similar outsize role in First Lie Wins, author Ashley Elston’s profile of a nice Southern girl who doesn’t actually exist. Finally, if you like your serial killer chases sweetened with a genuine love story, consider All the Colors of the Dark, the latest from author Chris Whitaker (We Begin at the End).

Hannah Willard There are so many good ones here that I have read or plan to read! I want to add We Solve Murders, How to Solve Your Own Murder, and Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect.

I would add the book Such Charming Liars by Karen M. McManus is not included on this list. I am excited to share because I got my hands on a copy of this one yesterday, so that might be the next book I start later today!

I will still need to obtain the other ones! But I have a couple on my TBR from this list. Thank you for sharing!

Abigail A lot of these books were great! And I have a lot of these on my library holds list. But man... The God of the Woods was a huge surprise hit for me. I did not expect to like it. I picked it as my BOTM on a whim because I didn't really like any of the options and I am SO glad I ended up with it. It is really special. Really not what I expected.
