The story itself is not however - it's Ellroy's fictionalised account of the investigation and its possible solution, although it's so brilliantly done and horribly believable at times you have to remind yourself regularly that this isn't how it happened!(less)

So this is a fiction book? And it defames the woman Elizabeth Short A REAL MURDER VICTIM I MIGHT ADD and turns her into a whore? Which was NOT TRUE at all. Shame on you 'Mister' Ellroy. Shame on you.

Unanswered Questions (1)

Does anyone have a "background information" recommendation for this book? I'm in the middle of the prologue and am pretty confused as to why there is a riot going on... a mixture of not knowing the slang used in the book and not really understanding 1940's LA... (I have read Fante, and wasn't confused really at all about his portrait and narrative in Ask the Dust.)
