Slouching Towards Bethlehem or The White Album are both good places to start. My favorite is Where I Was From, which is more of a book-length essay about California. I am also a big fan of Play It As It Lays. It's a brutal, atmospheric novel. Dear Macey,
I don’t know where you are currently mentally in the world, but I am almost 17 now and I found this book containing the things you are anxious about just fine and in bearable amount, but I have to say, I read many drug and substance issues related stories before so I might be a bit trained and accustomed to such topics. I think you should read this and just know you can always put the book down if the text is unbearable. Hope this helped.

I'm not sure what a Christen is. Do you mean Christian? You are right--indeed, Bethlehem is a place in the Bible, an important place, from all accounts. All I can say is that if you enjoyed reading the Bible, you will enjoy reading this book, and, if you did not enjoy reading the Bible or have not read the Bible, you will still enjoy this book.
