Be warned, this one also starts out with quite a bit of whining but a few of the characters turn it around. The story lines are also more interesting, there's just more stuff going on to be frank(less)

The first half of almost all of Hobb's series are character-driven rather than action-driven. However, if you can stick through it, the Ship of Destiny (#3) was by far my favorite of that trilogy, and probably contains the most "action," if that's what you're looking for. Overall, Fitz's story is so much richer with this base knowledge, and if you really hate it this much, are you sure you will like Hobb's other books?(less)
