Dirty Blood #1

Bite the Woman That Feeds

Rate this book
Kingsnake only wanted my blood—but now he wants all of me.

A sickness has claimed the kingdoms of men. Everyone is either sick or dying, weak to a curse that has no cure—except for me. I’m immune to this mysterious illness, and I do my best to heal the sick and ease the pain of the dying. I was supposed to marry the Prince of Raventower, but after his father and elder brother succumbed to the sickness, he’s now king—and can only marry someone of his station. He broke all his promises to me—and broke my heart.

Kingsnake, King of Vampires and Lord of Darkness, marches upon our gates and demands a handful of our healthiest citizens. The vampires have always stuck to their lands and never invaded ours, but their lack of food has made them desperate. King Elias not only succumbs to his demands—but he offers me on the condition that Kingsnake never return. The man I loved betrayed me—and will feed me to a monster.

I become a prisoner to the vampire king and witness his cruelty and malice first-hand. I knew I would hate him, but I didn’t know how much I would hate him. The feeling is mutual, because I can feel the emotions of those around me, and his emotions burn with rage anytime he’s in my presence. But the second he tastes my blood everything changes…

His anger is replaced by an intensity I’ve never felt in my life. It’s so powerful it smothers me until I can’t breathe. His stare is like wildfire, so searing hot it makes my skin melt. I know he wants me—and he wants me more than anyone else ever has. Even the man I loved never wanted me like this…

I would never sleep with a vampire…but Kingsnake is no ordinary vampire.

There are a lot of things wrong with this book, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where it all goes off the rails.

Maybe it’s the complete lack of world building? The modern language used in a vaguely medieval setting? Or the lack of physical descriptions of the main characters? Our male lead “Kingsnake” (wtf lol) only gets: pale skin. Handsome face. Muscles. Slitted eyes like a snake. Oh and a giant snake sidekick. Honestly…all I could picture was Voldemort with that little to go on. Which…ick.

altho, no shame if voldaddy is your kink. you do you!

Or maybe it’s the terrible, repetitive sex scenes? Seriously, what a snore. They are ALL THE SAME!! “He folded me underneath him…and then he fucked me good and hard with that big dick”. I wanted to barf.

Or MAYBE it’s that our female lead…oh god, I can’t even remember her name, she was that boring…only agrees to sleep with Kingsnake and “falls under his spell” because ~*his feelings for her are intense.*~ WHAT THE WHAT. You only banged the guy because he likes you?? That’s…so shallow, I truly cannot.

I won’t be continuing this series.

This is a shorter vampire romance set in a medieval setting. It has a very modern speaking FMC and an “alpha” grumpy MMC vampire king. The style of storytelling reminded me a little of KF Breene’s ROR series. In full transparency, that series was not my thing but I appreciate KF Breene’s writing skills. I do not think this story was written with the same quality.

I did find the whole magical snake twist to the vampire origin story was unique and has a lot of potential for development. I also found the world building has a lot of potential.

Modern dialogue: This isn’t a huge pet peeve of mine but there’s a limit and this story hit it for me. The little quips the FMC made, especially during the “banter” pulled me out of the world. It was jarring. The dialogue, overall, seemed scripted and I couldn’t find a unique voice in the MMC.

Spice: if you don’t like the word 🐓then this could work for you because it’s all “Richard” in this story. Repetitively. Fat Richard. Big Richard. Redundancy was the game - like the spice scenes which didn’t differ much.

Characterization: the MMC was a grumpy vampire. You’ve met him before. He doesn’t stand out from any of the others. He’s a possessive alpha so if consistency is your thing, he’s here for it.

There’s a snake who communicates telepathically to both the MMC and FMC. He’s more prop than character though. There’s no logic to his relationship with the vampire or FMC.

I do think some people will enjoy the story and it’s an easy read that goes quickly. It’s entertaining - not thought-provoking or emotive - and that may be exactly what someone is looking for. I will not be continuing the series though.

I can never say no to a dark vampire romantasy!

A world where a deadly plague is spreading rapidly, killing thousands of innocent people. But amidst this epidemic, there is one person, Larisa, who seems to be immune to the disease. Her king made a desperate deal with Kingsnake, the King of Vampires and Lord of Darkness to save their kingdom. In exchange for Larisa and a handful of healthy humans, Kingsnake promised to leave their kingdom alone and never return.

But when Larisa found out about the deal, she decided to run away. Unfortunately, she didn't get far before Kingsnake caught her and took her as a prisoner. However, as she spent more time with him, she began to realize that vampires are not the evil creatures that people have always made them out to be. As she tries to uncover the truth behind her immunity to the plague and who is responsible for the outbreak, she discovers shocking secrets. What will happen to her now that she's in the hands of the notorious Kingsnake? Join her on her journey to find out!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel! The author did a great job of introducing other paranormal creatures into the story, which I found quite fascinating. The inclusion of magical snakes was a unique twist that added to the overall appeal. However, I would have liked more world-building. Despite that, it was still a captivating story that left me eager for more. I highly recommend it to all fans of paranormal romance!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Penelope Barsetti, and Dreamscape Media for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

Had such high hopes for this one.

The premise sounded good. Intense emotion, spice and a great storyline. What we got was so mediocre in every single way that it was a huge disappointment.

No one is all that well fleshed out. The sex scenes are ABYSMAL (and cringy). The ‘emotions’ are literally described using fire and smoke as an analogy. (And what long-winded and confusing descriptions they were!)

All I kept feeling was annoyance. I wanted to feel all the feels, but all I got was confusing descriptions, several plot holes, many forgotten and dropped storylines. And too much description of how Kingsnake’s muscles and veins bulged and flexed. (And yes. THAT is his name. It’s so ridiculous!)

Honestly? I could have excused ALL of the above if I was only given SOME emotional depth from our hero and if the sex scenes had actually been good. (I can’t even explain how horrible they were. If you’re going to read this book, read it for those! Just so you can roll your eyes.)

DNF’d 10 pages in. this reads like a newly-versed 14 year old on wattpad who’s just barely scraping the surface on how to use punctuation. the amount of run-on sentences were ASTOUNDING. i mean i really couldn’t believe my eyes. my brain was GASPING for air and i wasn’t even reading it aloud. something tells me it’s only downhill from here. i am SO TIRED of the curse of booktok mediocracy. as someone once said—some people simply weren’t made to write, they were made to read. let’s maybe keep it that way.

Probably DNF at the 40% mark.

I really enjoyed Barsetti’s Forsaken series. It had an intriguing mythology and although the dialogue was modern, it had a certain charm. Although I never finished the series as the second book introduced another couple, I was still intrigued by Barsetti.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover Barsetti had then written a vampire fantasy. However, this is just not magical or captivating but utterly devoid of human life. Feels like AI wrote this. It’s not offensive but just incredibly lifeless. I want my money back.

The hero and heroine do not like each other at all. All of a sudden, the hero wants to bang the heroine and he’s suddenly thinking she’s annoying… but in a cute way. Give me a break. Heroine hates hero. She may be physically attracted but there has been nothing so far of her stubborn ass interested in him.

The worldbuilding is also not interesting.

THIS SERIES IS SOOOOO FUCKIN’ DELICIOUS, I’MA LOSE SLEEP TO BINGE READ THIS WHOLE TRILOGY.

“Stop looking at me like that.” His stare remained, and so did the crippling desperation. It was almost too much to bear. “Until I’m buried deep inside you with your come all over my dick, I’ll never stop looking at you like this.”

I fucking dislike fantasy, well… let me rephrase that, fantasy (& pnr) & I don’t go together. But when it comes to Penelope. Her writing hits diff & is DIFFERENT! I didn’t even wanna read this series yet bc I knew how good this was finna be & she proved me right. 🫦🩸❤️‍🔥 🗡️

This book had so much potential.

Where do I even start with the disappointment?

In the beginning I was very very confused on what the descriptions in the italics meant. Was this something she was seeing? But why? No explanation. Come to find out it had something to do with her being “different”. But there was no explanation for it in the beginning so initially I’m like okay I guess she’ll explain it later…

I was about 70 pages in when I started really getting fed up because there still had not been a description of either the MMC or the FMC. I knew more about what the snake looked like than I did either of the main characters which is just baffling. MMC - tall, and pale. FMC - found out she had dark hair and freckles halfway through the book.
This is a direct quote talking about the MMC eye color
“They’d turned to green, but slowly, they were returning to their previous color”
WHAT WAS THE PREVIOUS COLOR???? How do you write that and not just put the color they were before??? I eventually found out he had brown eyes but not until many pages later. Idk if the author was trying to leave it up to the reader to picture somebody but I have zero imagination so I absolutely need to have details.

I would say my final straw for deciding not to continue reading was the second sexual encounter and briefly after. It was literally almost word for word a repeat of the first time they had sex. Same descriptions of “big dick” and “folding my body to get a better angle”. After they had sex they were talking back and fourth but there was no indication of who was talking. Just quotations and whatever they said…. I’m supposed to guess who tf is speaking?? So hard to follow. I literally couldn’t take it anymore because it had been like that throughout the entire book already and then to have the disappointment of the sexual encounter just before?? Yeah a super waste of my time.

November 2023 - Attempted to Read

It's been a while since I read a good PNR romance with vampires, and I was looking forward to this book.

It was a complete and utter disappointment.
Annoyed Disappointed GIF - Annoyed Disappointed Mad GIFs
(This is why I don't trust book ratings.)

First of all, the title says this is a Dark Fantasy.
Laughing At You Pointing GIF - Laughing At You Pointing Laughing GIFs
(P.B. has wisely removed "A Dark Fantasy" from the title.)

Second of all, is this historical or modern? 🤔
🤴🏻🏰 There's kings, castles, men wearing armor and fighting with swords, traveling by horseback.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 - I approached the table and took a seat under the enormous chandelier, which was aglow with candles even though the palace had electricity. 😵‍💫

He was dressed similarly, in just breeches and a tunic...
👑 He stopped directly before me, kingly in his tunic with the serpent, his broad shoulders filling out his armor and cloak in a muscular way.
𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗻 -
I put on my boxers and lounge pants
𝗔𝗻𝗱 -
That left my bra and panties

🙂 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀:
∗ I was a maid in the castle, not a healer, but I’d been assigned the task simply because I remained healthy while others perished from the disease.
∗ My heart sank like an anchor from a galleon. It struck the bottom then tilted over, locked in the darkness of the abyss.
∗ I was the first one to speak. “What duties do you have for me, my lord?”

☹️ 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀:
∗ “You think I’m a pain in the ass? Honey, you haven’t seen the half of it.”
∗ “You act like you’re a teenage boy who needs to fuck a couple of times before he stops blowing his load so soon.”
∗ Easy to forget that we were enemies turned allies. Easy to forget that we were frenemies.

😬 With a heroine who is TSTL.
• How could I have been so stupid? How could I have given my heart to someone so unworthy?
• I knew it was a dangerous decision to go running in the dark in a place I’d never been before...
• “How did you do that…?” ...It was probably a stupid question to ask in my current circumstance
• I pushed to my feet—and ran for it. I left my bag behind. Even my sword. It was a stupid decision when I couldn’t possibly outrun a vampire...
• How could I be so stupid? “That’s right…vampires hate daylight.”
• When I refused to walk, he dragged me across the stone, in front of everyone like I was a toddler throwing a tantrum. “Let me go!”

🙄 I’m the most powerful goddamn person in the world right now.” I wasn’t stupid, and I wanted to make that abundantly clear.

🧛‍♂️ The vampire, Kingsnake, warned the h:
“At my side is the safest place you’ll ever be. I’ll let you figure that out the hard way.” Perhaps I should take that warning to heart, but I was so desperate for freedom that I was willing to take my chances.
After she's nearly killed:
Shit. Kingsnake was right.

🩸 Kingsnake killed his previous prey:
Rose had belonged to me exclusively, but feeding on the same blood repeatedly had dulled my senses. When my people began to starve, I offered to share her, despite her protests. But they’d become so hungry, they sucked her dry and accidentally killed her. I could pursue the culprit and decapitate them, but I knew that wouldn’t be right, not when I was the one at fault.
🙅‍♀️ No wait, she got herself killed:
“While my people respect my rulership, they’re hungry. My previous prey didn’t heed my warning—and you can guess how she ended up.”

Loved reading the mesmerizing paranormal story. When Larissa is captured by Kingsnake, King of the Vampires and Lord of Darkness, she makes a deal with him in order to try to find a cure for the plague. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written with captivating characters, and a must read riveting storyline. Can't wait to read the next book in the series by the phenomenal author, Penelope Barsetti.

DNF @ 25%

Med evil setting with modern vernacular. That doesn't really bother me too too much, but it just rankles. Maybe because the rest of the story is so terrible. Non existent world building, I honestly have no idea what anyone looks like, and the FMC and MMC are both TSTL. I'd be happy if they both died and the author started over with realistic, believable, and interesting characters with even the bare minimum of intelligence.

It's just that bad. *shrug*

This was such an amazing dark fantasy romance! This was my first Penelope Barsetti book and it won’t be my last. This book was so good! I was immediately sucked in and I couldn’t put it down, I practically read it in one sitting. I’m not usually a spicy book reader, but I ate this one up and couldn’t read it fast enough.

Bite The Woman That Feeds is the first book in the Dirty Blood Trilogy. A plague has made its way through the kingdom and one woman finds out that she’s immune and doesn’t know why. Not only is the human race dying, but the vampires find themselves without a good source. This woman, Larissa, gets traded to the vampire king, Kingsnake, and is held captive with the promise of possibly being able to save everyone from the plague.

Read this if you like:

Bite The Woman The Feeds is another great series by Penelope Barsetti. I normally don’t read paranormal books, but I knew since it was by Penelope Barsetti it would be good. From the moment you start reading you won’t want to put it down until you have finished. I loved it and can assure you you will love it too. I loved Kingsnake and Larissa and how their feelings for each other develop throughout the story. This is definitely must read series!

"Bite the Woman That Feeds" takes readers on a captivating journey into a world filled with intrigue, loyalty, and unexpected twists. Larissa and Kingsnake emerge as complex characters driven by core values of loyalty, adding depth and emotional resonance to the narrative. Kingsnake, in particular, stands out as a fascinating character with a selfless commitment to his people. Bite the Woman That Feeds skillfully balances a rich lore that deepens the connection to the world with a compelling fantasy storyline. It's refreshing to find a book that includes smut without sacrificing a well-crafted plot. The combination of captivating lore and a strong narrative highlights the author's ability to create a fantasy world that engages readers on multiple levels.

While the synopsis initially hints at a different direction, the actual content of the book proves to be a pleasant surprise. The strong storytelling and character development overshadow any initial misgivings, leading to a satisfying and enjoyable read. Larissa's sacrifice to stay in the vampire realm for the greater good adds a layer of complexity to her character, making her journey all the more compelling.

AllI I can say at this time is Brava Penelope knows how to capture you in every story she pens!!! ❤✍📚

Ok it is time to review the fist book in this trilogy. Get ready to travel the Kingdoms and characters Penelope created!

We start off in Raventower a kingdom that has been hit with an horrific plague killing many people even the Royals were affected. There seemed to be one person who had immunity to this deadly sickness. She cured as many as she could.

In another kingdom far away across the lands the humans were also dying. This caused a major problem in Grayson since in was a Kingdom of Vampires and they needed to feed. They were growing weaker by the day!!

Kingsnake the ruler of Grayson traved.to.Raventower and asked for some people to supply them with the blood they needed to survive. This is where he learns of Larisa, but she took off so he wouldn't find her. She gave them a run for the money so to speak, they finally caught her a real spitfire fought like a man.

These two are the main characters of the story along with Fang ,Kingsnakes loyal companion.

Not to give much of the story away, but by the end of their journey back to Grayson Kingsnake feels compelled to keep Larisa close due to her behavior during their travel.

If you're familiar with the author's work you know her male characters are strong sexy powerful and protective men. Larisa fits the female characters also as strong willed and she possess something Kingsnake wants and desires!!!

Sit back and enjoy this tale and there is so much more coming.

Why is Larisa in the castle?
How does she bond with fang?
Will Kingsnake keep his promise?
Who sent this plague among the humans?

This is a good genre f9r tye style of this author's work.
The Hero can be aloof and uncaring because he feels his race is superior.
The heroine hates his kind.
There is alot of history that slowly unravels and world building.

There is an ex on both sides.
This ends on a cliffhanger, a series of books.
No details other than the Hero and heroine.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I was hooked from the very beginning. Although it has little to no world building for a fantasy novel, I didn't even care! This was fast-paced, easy to follow, and I ate this up in less than 24 hours. It was addicting, spicy, fast, and fun. It is truly a book of entertainment.

Oh my lanta, I absolutely adored this book. I want to immediately jump into the next one to find out what happens because, honestly? I refuse to accept that ending. Good thing I know that this is the first in a series. I was promised, dark smexy vampire times and hooo boy. Did this deliver. We have a bad*$$ FMC who doesn’t take lip from anyone. Add in that she is magically immune? Hello bits of mystery thrown in to the fantasy. Overall, a great read and a great first book to the series.

Larissa is a maid in the palace and is tending to the sick. A plague had entered their lands and has ravaged them. The king and the eldest son have perished, leaving the younger brother (the spare) in charge. When vampires march on their city to demand humans to feed them or have them overpower the whole kingdom, she get traded as the top billed prize: the only immune human. Instead of accepting her date, she runs. What will she do to escape the clutches of the vampires?

Thank you to the Nerd Fam for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

*thank you to Penelope for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

This book had me in its grasp from the beginning & I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down until the very last page!
Larissa is given to Kingsnake (king of vampires & lord of darkness) and thus begins this captivating tale between the two.
This story seriously has everything you could want. There’s enemies to lovers, adventure, banter, battles, tension, & spice that’s oh-so-delicious but still romantic. I loved both of these characters so much and truly couldn’t tell you who I loved more. Their chemistry is phenomenal & though they were complete opposites they were able to communicate!! (ʙɪɢ ᴛʜᴀɴᴋ ʏᴏᴜ ᴘᴇɴᴇʟᴏᴘᴇ, ʙᴇᴄᴀᴜsᴇ ᴍɪsᴄᴏᴍᴍᴜɴɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ɪs ᴍʏ ᴇɴᴇᴍʏ.)

Did this book have literally everything in it that I cannot for the life of me resist? Yes.

I found this randomly on an Amazon top book list in its category and I’m glad I picked it up. It was such an easy, entertaining read and I was able to read the whole thing in just a few hours. It scratched my vampire romance itch and it’s awesome that book 2 only comes out in a few more weeks!

Do you like prisoner-romance? Or the frienemy troupe? There's a bit of consent too.

This book got a lot of bad reviews and reading through those makes me want to defend the book. Reviewers complained about the predictable romance and the brooding and possessive male lead. But that's like buying drugs and then complaining it's addictive and didn't give you friends. I think most people who read the front cover would figure out what kind of entertainment it would offer. It was quite obvious what kind of story it would be from the first few pages. If you didn't like it, you should have stopped there.

But I have to agree, the male lead is a bit too much. He's a bit of an asshole. Guys can be strong without being assholes and bringing an asshole doesn't make someone strong.

There were a few scenes in the story I thought the characters could have done better. It was not romantic. It might be realistic, but I didn't come here for realistic.

What kind of name is King Snake? What girl wants to be romanced by a guy named that? I get that it's the entire vampire universe where they are named after snakes, like Viper or Cobra, but it kind of kills the mood in bed. He's a vampire, and he's also a snake. He has a pet snake, and his name is King Snake. The sex part was pretty hot if you can get over that.

A final note, I despise cliffhangers. The plot is not that complicated, the way the author leaves the story at the climax is just annoying and unnecessary. Let readers come back for the writing, not the need for closure.

WHEW this book was a whirlwind of vampire goodness, smut, sass, and enemies doing lovers things 😩

i quite literally couldn’t put this book down & read it in a single day. highly recommend for anyone in a slump looking to be pulled out!

here are some highlights:
-mmc is a vampire king/ king of darkness… need I say more
-fang, our mmc’s snake companion is arguably my fav character
-TRUE enemies to lovers (back to enemies)
-vibes of hades x persephone mixed with beauty and the beast
-smut 👀
-touch her you die
-witty banter
-morally grey mmc (who is secretly a softie for the fmc but would never admit it)

the only thing that knocked down the rating from 5 stars was that the spice scenes became noticeably repetitive and monotonous. like, mix it up Kingsnake, I know you’ve got it in you.
