Two short story prequels to the award-winning novel, The Marann.
First Contact Earth's Ambassador to Tolar, Smithton Adler Russell, gets a call in the middle of the night.
Field Work The ruler of Monralar is ambitious, ruthless, and out to unseat the Sural. Can one laborer put a stop to the Monral's scheme before Tolar's advanced technology is exposed to the Trade Alliance?
First Contact and Field Work. Both deal with Tolar making contact with humans. The first is from the human and Monral's point of view. The second is the same incident from the Sural's point of view.
Earth origin humans are exploring the neighboring systems and starting to stretch their interstellar legs. Meeting new beings peacefully should be the highest outcome of this endeavor to merge with a Trade Alliance. Tolar is a world easily reachable in stellar terms and is populated by humanoid beings who visibly resemble pre-industrial humans.
Appearances are deceiving. An excellent novella constructed in the form of two versions of the first contact story told from two points of view. The editing of this work is top notch. Five out of five stars.
I did not like this couple in the first book so it is no real surprised I didn't enjoy spending time with them here. They were simply unlikable and I never connected with them.
A great read with interesting characters and a tantalising introduction to this universe. Quite short, but as it's free that's not a problem. Highly recommended.
