Dive back into the world of the Mulvaney family with Family & A Necessary Evils Anthology. This collection of mini-fiction stories brings you the heartwarming, hilarious, and sometimes harrowing lives of the seven couples from the bestselling series, Necessary Evils.
These contemporary gay romance tales are filled with dark humor, hot sex, minor trials, and the joyful chaos of married life and parenthood. Experience over twenty stories, including exclusive narratives about two couples in a unique poly relationship, available only in this anthology or on my Patreon.
What makes this collection truly special? The answer is seven bonus epilogues that have never been released in book format, offering fans new content and deeper glimpses into the lives of their favorite characters. Whether you're a long-time reader or new to the Mulvaney family, this anthology offers a perfect blend of love, laughter, and life's little challenges.
Created for those who couldn't join Patreon, and as a gift to loyal patrons wanting a keepsake, Family & Felonies is a must-have addition to your collection. Join the Mulvaney family once more and enjoy the everyday adventures of love, family, and a touch of lunacy.
Onley James lives in North Carolina with her daughter, her daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and a menagerie of animals, both good and evil. James splits her time between writing m/m romance and mainlining dangerous levels of caffeine and attempting to maintain her ever-slipping sanity.
When not at her desk you can find her whining about how much writing she has to do while avoiding said writing by binge-watching unhealthy amounts of television and doom scrolling on social media. She loves true crime documentaries, anti-heroes, and writing kinky, snarky books about morally gray men who fall in love with other men.
For the most part, I really liked it. It was good to have more stories with all the characters. But I am disappointed we got so little of Thomas/Aiden and Archer/Mack. And that all the many stories with Asa, Zane, Felix and Avi were more erotica than plot. I don't mind some sexy but it was too much for me
Family & Felonies is an anthology of short stories and bonus epilogues (and prologues) from Onley James's Necessary Evils series. It's best read after you've finished with the series itself. You can expect dark humour, lots of spice, minor angst, and the chaos of married life and parenthood.
I absolutely adored this. All of these stories were originally published on Onley's Patreon, and this is a perfect keepsake for Patreon members as well as those that can't join! I had so much fun diving back into the Mulvaney's world, and it's making me want to do a re-read of the series. The spice was off the charts, as always, and I certainly found myself laughing out loud. If you're a fan of Necessary Evils you'll definitely want to give this one a read. It's relatively light (except for the dark humour which is perfectly on brand) so it's perfect for balancing out your TBR or cooling off after an angstier read.
I’ve been subscribed to the author’s Patreon for a while now, so I’ve been reading each of these short stories as they were published. Literally love all of them so much, and I’m so happy they’re all together in book format now. If you miss the Necessary Evils universe or if you wanted more from it (think, fanfic-style content/oneshots), then you’ll for sure love this anthology.
I’m particularly partial to Jake the Snake, Snitches Get Stitches, and Bring the Boots 🤭
Not much here. A few cute moments, a few hot sex scenes. This felt more like fan fiction than anything. These shorts highlight how repetitive the author is when writing sex. Pretty much each scene has someone “folded practically in half” to get deeper, someone “grinding to get as deep as possible while they come” and someone “batting his hand away” when they get too sensitive after an orgasm. It’s just annoying to read the same phrases over and over, especially when those phrases (and a few others) were already heavily sprinkled throughout the series. Also, I don’t know what the obsession is with having babies/ collecting children. Lastly, the “core four” stories, while hot as Hell at times, didn’t ring true to the characters. It was like fan fiction ignoring the characters as they were written in order to get the hot scenes they want. I mean, it was all fine, but real short stories rather than slice of life snippets that stay true to the characters instead of just being whatever gets fans off would have been preferable for me. Maybe I am being harsh, and maybe I have just been over saturated with Mulvaneys, but this was mostly a let down.
I really enjoyed the first half of this anthology, especially the Core Four chapters! I love the scenes where the whole Mulvaney family are hanging out together - the banter is unmatched and they brought a smile to my face. I love all of these characters so much, so revisiting them was great.
The spice in this book is hot AF, but also very repetitive. Aside from the group scenes (which are amaaaaazing), most of it was the same, and I kind of got bored of reading spice in every single chapter. There were also some really nice (non sexual) core four chapters from patreon missing, so I wish those were included.
It’s also very clear that this book hasn’t been edited or proofread at all. I understand patreon chapters being unedited, but I think when you’re actually publishing/selling a book you need to check for mistakes. This book was riddled with spelling errors, instances where completely the wrong word had been used, and characters being called by the wrong name. It happened often enough that it distracted me from the story.
Overall, this was a fun book and I’d recommend it for dipping in/out of when you feel like revisiting the Mulvaneys. However, if you read it all in one go it might feel a bit repetitive after a while, and the book could use a proofreader.
Ahhh, this was perfection. (Well, almost. I'll get to that.) I loved all the short stories with all my faves and their shenanigans and I'm so sad this series is finished. Though I know I'll see them again in the spin-off series, so that's something. I fell HARD for these books. I will no doubt read them again and again in the future.
My only small complaint is that there's not more content for Archer and Mac in this?? And while we do have shorts for Maniac... it's just prologues again, while I would LOVE some shorts of Thomas and Aiden just being happy together like the others got in their shorts. (Well, all except Archer and Mac, which... again... what the hell?) But it's only a small complaint and it didn't bring down my enjoyment of what we did get.
This is a glorious collection of Mulvaney mayhem and steaminess. From Noah's wedding meltdown to Lucas' anxiety over the girls, mix in Aiden's and Thomas' interactions prior to getting together with dashes of poly moments between the twins and their partners, topped off with bonus epilogues and prequels. Each one is a steamy extension of a Mulvaney book or relationship to enjoy or savor. This is the addition to your Necessary Evils collection you didn't know you wanted or needed.
Family & Felonies is A Necessary Evils Anthology. These are ficlets from the series that were originally posted on Patreon. I love these little looks at my favorite characters. This also includes the bonus epilogues from the NE books. It is so good to have all these ficlets in on place. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves the Nessassary Evils series by Onley James.
I am aware that this is a compilation of Patreon snippets, so I shouldn't have *expected* scenes of consequence and narrative weight, but I *wanted* it. There was also a distinct repetitiveness in most of these chapters, which was frustrating to read one after another.
I wanted more of all the brothers. Where was Mac & Archer? Or Thomas & Aiden? Why so much of the twins and their mates? Also while it was nice to include all the bonus epilogues in one place, I was kind of bummed bc that was half the book that I was anticipating new content.
I truly enjoyed what was included that was new to me but I expected something more. 🤷🏻♀️
This was....underwhelming? Disappointing? Don't get me wrong; I liked quite a bit of it. Noah going nutty while trying to plan their wedding was entertaining. Seeing the twins and their partners all cozied up together was sexy as hell. But....there was a lot to be desired here. For starters, there was no Mac and Archer and the little section that was Thomas and Aiden....not really them, not together, anyways. And, I'm sorry but adding in the bonus epilogues, content that was already free? Poor move. Basically, 25% of what I paid for this paid for something I already had for free. Definitely not a fan of that.
And the editing. This really needed to be edited better. I understand that this was content included on Patreon and maybe writers don't edit their stuff on there. Okay, fine. I get that. You're insanely busy and this is bonus stuff. BUT...the minute you put it into a book, start selling it, you really need to edit it, need to polish those stories up 'til they shine! And this was not done.
I just feel there was so much more that could've been explored. So many of the Mulvaneys have kids now and, apart from it being mentioned as an aside in stories, it's not delved into. Maybe it is on Patreon but, if that's the case, maybe include that in your bonus content? Not everyone's got money to be handing over every month. So, books like these, we delight in seeing new content. I was *so* looking forward to this, had missed my insane Mulvaneys. But....this was just lacking, in my opinion.
Also, this is just a random personal preference, but, maybe put things in chronological order, not by couple? It'd help keep track of things.
I feel like there could've been more in here. More with the brothers spending time together, doing jobs. Or maybe their partners hanging out, figuring things out. Maybe they'll be another bonus book. If so, hopefully it'll have more content, have more new stuff for us readers to enjoy.
So, I do recommend it if you enjoy the antics of the Mulvaney family. There were still plenty of fun moments, a lot of sexy times (though, I have to agree with some others who rated this and said some of the sex scenes felt a bit repetitive--so maybe don't read it all in one sitting? I drew mine out, read chapters between other books.) and even a few heartwarming moments.
But, maybe don't get your hopes up too high. I did and they were kind of shattered.
If there's more bonus content put out in book form, however, I eagerly anticipate it.

I LOVED getting to get a glimpse back into the Mulvaney world with these anthologies.
Super fun, super spicy tales from all different times in the Mulvaney world timeline! My faves will always be Asa and Avi though so getting tons of content with them, Zane and Felix was fab!
Super fun read if you’ve read the series, definitely jump in and read it!
I’ve been waiting forever to read the core-four mini-fics and I was NOT disappointed. Asa, Zane, Felix and Avi are smoking hot together. Heck, Just Zane and Felix are enough to melt my kindle. I reads several books about these four guys.
I quite enjoyed the rest of the stories as well. Maybe with the exception of Thomas. His really didn’t have anything to do with him and Aiden so, meh.
i have been waiting for a while to read of Noah crash before his marriage, it was very sad how deep he was hurt even by his birth-mother, i had been expecting it, but it was very sad.
The twins family life was very hot, but let's be honest.... i am still waiting for Beverly final stand.
Aiden and Thomas shorts where very insightful and emotionally intense.
Noah & Adam🖤, Noah had me in ugly tears, he deserves Adam giving him the fuckin world. 👏🏼 Lucas and August best dads ever. Jericho and Atticus god help 😮💨 As for the foursome, it’s a.. a touch and go but their love is beautiful. Fuck shitty birth givers💩 The python scene lol perfect. So do not care for Thomas and Aidan😒
This is an interesting collection; a group of short stories set in and around the Necessary Evil series. It fills in some holes and gives additional insight into some of the characters. At the same time it opens up new holes and now I have to go back and reread the series to see if I missed information or if these are truly new holes.
There will never come a day where I tire of reading Mulvaney Family & co. material. NEVER. If it's them grocery shopping or literally watching paint dry IDC I will gobble it up until the end of time.
THANK YOU ONLEY FOR PUTTING ALL OF THESE IN ONE PLACE!!! You are a real one.
This was a fun and spicy anthology of the bonus fics from Patreon and the bonus epilogues for each book. My favorite stories were the core four. It was nice to see how they grew and settled into their dynamic.
Oh, how I missed those murderous babies!! It's no secret that Necessary Evils is one of my favorite series, so I'm very happy to read more about them. This was a collection of short stories and how I wish we got more... I'm really hoping Onley James writes more of these!! ❤️
Omg loved it!!! So happy to get more from all these characters! Noah my sweet baby!!!! And love reading about Zane, Asa, Felix and Avi! Getting to read scenes of younger Mulvaney was so funny and lovely!
Loved all the extra stories and tidbits about the Mulvaney's and their loves. It was good to see some more of some beginnings and expansions on where the books left off. Particularly enjoyed the Core Four's stories.
I had missed these characters and this series, so it was great to see more of them. I still wish there had been more moments with Thomas and Aiden. The ones in this anthology were kind of sad since it only showed what happened before they got together.
So cute! So hot! Loved all of this! So happy Onley James gave us more from this family!!!! Adam and Noah and Jericho and Atticus are favs but sersiously, the Murder twins with Felix and Zane were so hot!! 🥵 highly recommend if you’ve read the series!
I could read about the Mulvaney’s forever and never tire. They are perfection. Onley is perfection. Jericho and Atticus will forever be my favorites. And Mac and Archer’s first time was perfection. So now can you see why I think this was perfect?
I love reading about the lives after the HEA and I certainly enjoyed these. I am a Patreon member but I enjoyed reading these stories all in one place.
