A princess determined to survive an arranged marriage to a heartless faerie prince is saved by a twist of fate that could destroy their world in this all-new standalone fantasy romance.

As the half faerie daughter of a human king, my days were spent tucked out of sightuntil the Seelie Fae sought an alliance with our kingdom. In exchange for my father’s help in defeating their Unseelie enemies, I would wed Atakan the heartless.

The Seelie prince loathed everyone, but none more than me. Throughout the years leading to our nuptials, each encounter grew more terrifying than the last as he demonstrated how he’d earned his infamous reputation.

Fear would only doom me faster. So I learned to hide it with games I soon became happy to play. I wasn’t supposed to crave a monster. But just when I’d thought I might tame the untameable, fate intervened.

And delivered me straight to his enemy.

This fast-paced standalone features true enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, high heat, and a cast of morally grey and villainous characters.

the only way to survive atakan the heartless was to play this game of hunter versus prey—even if it drew blood.

it has been one hot minute since my last ella fields romance.

amid clouds and bones was such a cute delight to devour! featuring toxic romance between enemies turned lovers; an arranged marriage for a fae prince and half-fae princess to alleviate tensions and strengthen two kingdoms; numerous villainous characters with self-serving agendas and delicious smut that renders you a hot mess—it ticked all of the boxes. this heated enemies to lovers romantasy did not let me down whatsoever.

“what isn’t fair is your existence,” atakan seethed, his mouth leaving my forehead and moving closer to mine. “the way you make me crave and loathe you in equal measure.”

atakan ethermore is such an exasperating asshole, but he was unapologetically himself. a heartless and ruthless male fae, he was full of sheer arrogance and alluring cunningness. sometimes his motivations were unclear, or his emotions (or lack thereof) oftentimes uncertain, however if there's something i appreciate, it's a character who has reasons behind his decisions. i've always been that reader who thirsts for the mean, villainous character who has “touch her and die” vibes and atakan, my sweet tortured villain delivered 🤌

sometimes mildred nephryn was a lil dense at times but she was not a wholly foolish doormat. if atakan taunted her, she’d taunt back without hesitation. she did not bend over backwards to appease her wretched betrothed, nor did she relent in her torments. she’s been humiliated and mistreated but her resilience is admirable. the slow burn obsession, the humorous banter and the charming verbal sparring between mildred and atakan was titillating, it left me kicking my feet in excitement and giggling with eagerness.

“i want you. i want you as much as i loathe you—so much, it feels like i can’t breathe.” his parted lips dragged across my cheek, his whisper scathing near my ear. “give me back my fucking breath.”

the writing was jarring sometimes. i found myself either re-reading sentences, sometimes full paragraphs, or reading at a slower pace than normal to make sure i understood the narrative. that aside, the world building was enthralling—the seelie kingdom sounds like an absolute dream with its lush forests and the castle made of expansive tree trunks/branches. based on hints and certain bits of information ella fields revealed, the end was not unexpected; however it remains an equally pleasant surprise!

☁⋆⁺₊ if you love: seelie vs unseelie fae and shifters. fated mates/bonds. villainous characters. an arranged/forced marriage between two kingdoms. slow burn and enemies to lovers romance.

“you were mine.” his eyes returned to me, ablaze with the anger roughening his voice. “i knew then that i would rather remain trapped for eternity than let anyone think you’re theirs.”

♡ pre-read review ♡

nothing excites me more than an enemies to lovers romantasy featuring an arranged marriage and villainous characters. i haven’t read an ella fields romance in such a long time and the arc just landed on my kindle 🥹

i woke naked but not alone.
on his side, head perched on his hand, atakan watched me. “i can't decide if looking at your body makes me happier than the thought of watching you die.”

calling all villain-loving, toxic-romance, enemies-to-lovers, smutty romantasy fans to the front — run, don’t walk, straight to kindle unlimited for this one, y’all.

i have loved quite literally every single ella fields romantasy i’ve ever read — and this one is no different. it has all of the staples of an ella classic — unbearably sexy villain, FMC who can give as good as she gets, god-tier smut, and a plot twist that’ll make you so mad that you’ll get a hand cramp from how hard you clench your fist.

the (spoiler free) concept is that our FMC — mildred, or dread, depending on who’s talking — is betrothed as a child to a boy prince, known even from a young age for his villainy and heartlessness. what happens when you’re in an arranged marriage to someone you hate, who hates you back with equal, if not more, fervor? …..amid clouds and bones. that’s what.

AND IT’S SO, SO GOOD. this one was an unputdownable blast for me, rife with evil, teasing banter, oneupmanship that’ll make you rage and cackle in equal measure, a kingdom at war (headed by an equally hot faerie king), and all of the smut you could want.

how ella manages to write stories that are so full, fun, and captivating in the span of a single book is beyond me, but she does it every time.

pick this up if you’re looking for your next toxic, smutty romantasy fix. evil, hot faeries will never disappoint, and neither does ella.

thank you SO MUCH to ella for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this one! all feral, passionate opinions are my own.

3.5/5 - Ella Fields has long been one of my favorite fantasy authors!! And while I do really like her writing and creativity - I read this on Kindle Unlimited and I think it was a little choppy.

Something I always look for when I read fantasy is the world building - and that was a little bit lacking here. I loved the concepts of the plot and what had to be done to create this story... but have you ever heard of the 'white room' concept for writers? It's where you can't really picture the room because there isn't enough detail in the writing... that happened to me this time.

As with all Ella Fields books - very spicy!! Def more of an adult read!

Героїня була трішки як лялька, яку туди-сюди передають, але загалом історія вийшла непогана. Сподобалося, що довгий час було незрозуміло, хто тут головний чоловічий персонаж, а хто - головний антагоніст.

4.5⭐️ Oh, the games they played! I eat up every romantasy that Ella gives us. I loved the FMC, Princess Mildred. A halfling raised in the human realm. As a child, she was betrothed to the Seelie Prince (don’t worry, he was a child, too!). I loved that the story started with them meeting in their younger years. This is when the games started. The loathing, the banter and the way they taunted, and played with each other—delicious! (I even laughed out loud a few times). And the nicknames!! The middle was a tad slower, but I didn’t mind as it is a stand-alone. It made some other things that much better when we got to them. In true Ella fashion, there was spice and it’s 🤌🏻. I can’t wait for the next EF book!

Ella Fields has fast become an auto-buy author for me. No one captures the push and pull of a love/hate relationship quite like Ella, the pure intensity of emotion in her characters making it hard to look away. Amid Clouds and Bones is a story that finds comfort in the dark and monstrous, that basks in the twisty ways of the fae and revels in cruelties forgiven. It plays with the idea of lines being pushed, of a constant one-upping that keeps the pages turning and proves an addictive read. The dark romantasy folks are thoroughly fed with this one, and I already want to reread.

"For you, I would stay on my knees until they bled your name."

I was on the hunt for a good romantasy standalone and started this one on a whim, and let me tell you, this definitely satisfied my craving!
Though I'm still confused about a couple of things (I still don't get how exactly they ended the war lol?), I did enjoy the enemies-to-lovers vibes, the constant snark and banter between the main couple, and the twists and turns at the end.

I admit I got confused about who the main love interest was around the middle of the book, but I did like the way the book ended and who Mildred ended up with (even though I secretly also love the other one hehe).

Yes, this review is super vague, but it's best if you go into this blind like I did. This is definitely for all The Cruel Prince lovers out there (but better, imo).

Deceased. Trust Ella Fields to DELIVER a romantasy. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I will read anything this woman writes.

Another thing I've said before and is becoming my entire campaign platform - the romantasy genre is trending towards formulaic and stagnant. Only a select few authors imo actually deliver new storylines, and Ms. Fields is one of them. The tropes are all there in Amid Clouds and Bones - enemies to lovers, arranged marriage, forced proximity, one bed, etc etc - but are executed to a T.

Let's talk about these characters. Mildred is a half human, half fae princess, who gives as good as she gets. She is NOT a doormat and I loved her sass & her moments of vulnerability. She has a level of, let's call it cautious confidence, that I thought was refreshing to read in a character. Atakan is a Seelie fae prince, Mildred's betrothed, and one unapologetic proper-caps Asshole. I loved the fae politics, and I loved that Mildred wasn't this typical "oh naur, I've been thrust into a world I don't understand and must learn to navigate this court in order to survive!" fmc. Mildred knows exactly what she's been forced into with Atakan and the Seelie fae, she knows she must play their games, and my god the GAMES she and Atakan play. The tension was fucking incredible. The banter was god-tier.

The romance took so many twists & turns. Atakan is just so easy to hate - he's one of those alphaholes who stays firmly in the villain zone, but when he softens just that tiny smidge, it melts your whole heart. And it's not like he has a sudden personality transplant and becomes a hopeless romantic, spewing sonnets of love. He is perfectly himself throughout the entire story. The spice is spicin' in this one, but we know Ella doesn't disappoint in this category.

World building is dreamy. The kingdoms feel vibrant, the creatures pop off the page. I was fully immersed.

tl;dr - I stayed up til' 3:30am to finish this cuz I couldn't put it down, and this is a romantasy that won't disappoint.

Ella, what's next?!?!?

Maybe my brain does not compute fantasy but I was here for the enemies to lovers.

Even that took a dark turn with Mmc letting her go to fall with s.o else in order to get to throne
And Fmc carring for that other person almost loving him even after he killed her dad.

And then Mmc simply saying " I pretented to loath you while loving you. I pushed toward him but now I took you back and you're mine."

This book started out strong. I loved both mc's and the games they would play with each other. This book also ended strong. But the middle with the love triangle thrown in... that was a mess. I think she could have built on the enemies' to lovers' aspect and left out the love triangle. I really felt it was unnecessary. Mildred, our fmc, annoyed me a bit. However, I loved Atakan, our mmc. The story felt choppy. Overall, this was a bit of a disappointment.

I enjoyed this, but the writing style got confusing at times. I would have to read sections over and over again to understand what was happening. That pulled me out of the story a bit. But the enemies-to-lovers was done very well. Definitely one of my favorite things about Ella’s writing. The plot was little lacking too. But the romance was great!

MF Dark Fantasy
Fae x Fae/Human
Arranged Marriage
Hate To Love
Political/Court Intrigue
(Seelie vs Unseelie)
Competent FMC
Morally Grey MMC
Spice Perfection

Ok, first things first, before you read anything else: If you like any of the above tropes, read this book. It’s so good. I had a feeling I would like it, because I generally like all Ella Fields books, but this one… I just loved everything about it.

Mildred (aka Dread) a halfling (fae/human) princess learns from a very young age that she is betrothed to the Seelie Prince, in exchange for human aide against the Unseelie forces. Unfortunately for her, the young prince hates her, and has no problem letting it be known. Over the years the hatred grows between the two, along with some toxic obsession. That’s pretty much all you can get without getting into spoiler territory.

The characters in this story are amazing. Mildred is no simpering maiden – she gives as good as she gets. She refuses to be broken, and she holds her own with the viscous banter and actions of the Seelie prince. She sees the whole atrocious situation she’s been forced into as a game she must survive and win. Atakan is a douche canoe, no doubt, but with every good morally grey MMC there is always that little spark of what if…

“I want you. I want you as much as I loathe you—so much, it feels like I can’t breathe.”
His parted lips dragged across my cheek, his whisper scathing near my ear.
“Give me back my fucking breath.”

🥵
These two are just perfection. Loved it. This story is just so well done.

I did enjoy this, so rounding up, but objectively there are a number of issues. For a standalone quick fantasy romance between reading other books though - this is perfect and is why I like Ella Fields so much. Her stories are fun, quick, spicy, and low commitment.

Mildred is great FMC - she's witty, cunning, and holding her own as a half-human being shipped off to marry the (evil) seelie heir, Atakan. We get glimpses or their interactions over the years, and Atakan truly is terrible. Mildred has to play games with him to survive (literally survive). There's a lot of tension and drama throughout. And it's wonderfully spicy, as expected from Ella. Atakan is a classic morally grey character - he's terrible but intriguing and loveable in his own way.

My main issue isn't necessarily the romance, I liked that enough, but the writing was jarring. There just wasn't much flow to the story - the scenes felt hastily jammed together so the transitions left me a bit confused. I actually had no idea who the MMC would be going into this, and it wasn't at all clear until pretty far into the book. We had the whole side quest with Vane and I wasn't sure if this was becoming a why choose or if she was just switching to Vane. I actually had to read reviews because it was confusing and I wanted to know going in. If you're also wondering, Atakan is the MMC, and this is at most a love triangle. Not even really a love triangle because the time that Mildred is with Vane feels like an awful, but isolated, blip in the story. It's not high stakes - more confusing/irritating.

I think I’d have loved this more if there was more world building. I found myself confused a couple of times throughout and having to re-read paragraphs to fully comprehend the storyline. But this is hard with standalone fantasy! Regardless, Ella writes a great enemies to lovers romantasy.

The writing style left me confused and I found myself having to re-read pages to try and make sense of what was happening which really wrecked it for me. This book also lacked world building and character development. The story telling felt rushed, yet I somehow still found myself skimming at times because I just wanted to be done with it. I didn’t build any connection to this book or the characters within in, cute premise though just executed poorly.

“What isn’t fair is your existence,” Atakan seethed, his mouth leaving my forehead and moving closer to mine. “the way you make me crave and loathe you in equal measure.”

Amid Clouds & Bones is a steamy, dark fantasy romance that pulls you into a world of magical mayhem and brooding fae princes. 🌌✨

Tropes:
- Romantasy 💖
- Enemies to Lovers 💘
- Arranged Marriage of Convenience 💍
- Forced Proximity 💞
- Fae ✨
- Dragons 🐉
- One Bed
- Angsty 💝

The story follows Princess Mildred, who’s thrust into an arranged marriage with the ruthless Atakan Ethermore to unite two warring kingdoms. Atakan is every bit the arrogant, heartless fae prince you’d expect, but his complex motivations and dark charm make him irresistibly compelling. His character has that delicious touch her and die energy, and he definitely delivers on the antihero front.

Mildred, our resilient heroine, isn't just a passive pawn in this game. She’s got a fiery spirit and a sharp tongue that keeps Atakan on his toes. Their interactions are electric, filled with fiery banter and a slow-burn romance that will leave you eagerly flipping pages. 📖💥

“I want you. I want you as much as I loathe you—so much, it feels like I can’t breathe.” His parted lips dragged across my cheek, his whisper scathing near my ear. “Give me back my fucking breath.”

Despite the slow start and some jarring writing moments that made me pause for clarity, the world-building is enchanting. The Seelie kingdom's lush landscapes and intricate magic system had me dreaming of fae forests and castle branches. 🌳🏰

The plot twists are relentless, and while the ending wasn’t a total shock, it was a satisfying conclusion to a rollercoaster of a story. The chemistry between Mildred and Atakan is intense, and their journey from hate to a scorching love is captivating. However, a minor gripe is the occasional clunky writing, which detracted a bit from the otherwise immersive experience.

This book is a fantastic mix of villainous charm, heated romance, and epic fantasy. If you crave a smoldering fantasy romance with high stakes, morally grey characters, and a dose of magical intrigue, Amid Clouds & Bones will be right up your alley. Perfect for those who love a good slow-burn romance and aren’t afraid of a bit of angsty, villainous fun. 🌟💫

Mildred Nephryn is the half faerie daughter of a human king. Even though her mortal family cared for her, she kept to herself and tried to stay out of the way. Her sister was the heir of Nephryn, and Mildred was merely a tool meant for trade. Since she was a child she knew her life would never be her own. What she wanted didn't matter, and her future would be what others chose for her. All she'd ever craved was love, acceptance and freedom, but she tried to come to terms with her fate. With her father's kingdom at stake, he built an alliance with the Ethermore royals that promised her to the Seelie prince when she was older. It would be a transaction of peace and combined power. She would swap one cage and castle for another without any say. She would leave all she'd ever known behind to live among faeries.

As the moment she'd dreaded for ten years arrived, it was time to face her fears. The kingdom of Ethermore and Cloud Castle would be her new home. As a halfling princess she felt in danger, trapped, and powerless. Her betrothed was a monster with a reputation for being ruthless. Atakan Ethermore was as handsome as he was cruel. He enjoys playing games, and they clash at every turn. Surprisingly she began to want and loathe him in equal measure. Just when she thinks she might survive the heartless faerie prince, she's suddenly delivered to his enemy.

Amid Clouds and Bones by Ella Fields is a standalone, forced proximity, arranged marriage, enemies to lovers, royals, paranormal, fantasy romance full of spice, danger, tension, angst, and amazing banter. I loved this story so much! I was completely captivated and addicted to these characters, and couldn't put this book down. Nobody writes fantasy like Ella Fields. Her writing is incredible! I was instantly transported to a magical world full of twists, turns, suspense and inrigue. I adored Mildred and her villian! <333

Mildred and Atakan’s story was everything I needed in my fantasy romance and more. The kind of storytelling that has you ignoring your real world responsibilities and disappearing into the pages.

This one ticked all my boxes

Enemies to Lovers ✔️
Arranged Marriage ✔️
Delicious Chemistry ✔️
Angst Galore ✔️
Anti Hero ✔️

This is a delicious slow burn with plenty of twists and turns, it’s definitely not a sweet love story. Be warned that Atakan isn’t morally grey, he’s pitch black but you’ll fall for him anyway 🤷‍♀️

There were moments I wanted to slap him, then moments he made me swoon. He’s the kind of guy you know you shouldn’t like but just can’t help yourself. Then we have Mildred - I loved her quiet strength and bravery and finished the story with a massive girl crush.

Definitely recommend.

I received an arc of this book.

This book was confusing…

Let me start off by saying that I really enjoyed the push and pull dynamic Atakan and Mildred had going on at the beginning, but from the moment Vane was introduced it kinda went downhill for me.
I fully expected this to turn into an ACOTAR type of situation because I struggled to figure out who the love interest was supposed to be.

Both Atakan and Vane already had side chicks and seemed more interested in using Mildred for their own agenda than actually romancing her.

The side characters at both courts where pretty aloof and not really likable, which gave the impression that Mildred didn’t really fit in either realm.

On top of that Mildred lost all her initial fire and became such a helpless pawn.
All she did all day was eat, sleep and read… don’t need to read a book to experience that.

Her falling for Vane and then being heartbroken by his betrayal even though she only had her own stupidity to blame for that was the nail in the coffin for me.

But even without the completely unnecessary love triangle, the plot was simply confusing. Atakan explaining his motivations in the end didn’t really help to clear things up either.

I guess if you enjoy bully romances or liked the Cruel Prince you‘ll probably like this book though.

3.5 because of Vane

I understood the Vane plot but hated every second of it, he was just ew. Can’t believe she loved him even a smidge bffr, aren’t you supposed to be obsessed with Atakan. Where was the yearning, she literally barely thought about him then bonded to him straight away saying she always knew they were meant for each other ????

Atakan ate tho

Love triangles really don’t do it for me. I was convinced for 85% of the book Atakan & Vane were gonna end up being the same guy. Both were MIA like 50% of their scenes, both said similar things to MMC and both never really details about themselves, so I was positive they were gonna be the same shifter beast. Nope. Just a pointless love triangle 🫠 (for the record, Vane>Atakan)

Amid Clouds and Bones by Ella Fields is a breathtaking and treacherous journey through scorching hot enemies to lovers tension, angst of rejected mate, heart stopping twists and magical moments in a magical world. Princess Mildred had her heart broken, soul ripped apart by our dark fae prince and then put together at the end by the same antihero. Atakan Ethermore is ruthless, cold hearted, manipulative and vicious but he came out with a such a possessive dominating protective side for Mildred at the end! This romantasy would have you under it's spell in no time. PS There are dragons..

I would suggest you go blind and let the story take away to the fae world. It's a very slow burn. It will take time for things to speed up but I promise the patience will be worth it. Mildred is the half Seelie princess who was forced into an arranged marriage with the Seelie prince Atakan..and they hate each other and tried to hurt each other all the years leading to the actual marriage time. The alliance was needed to beat the Unseelie kingdom. When Mildred moves to Ethermore..things got messy and complex as she couldn't deny that they have a twisted desire. Just when she could see the other side lt Atakan the heartless..she accidentally got transported to the enemy world. Vane the Unseelie King has a whole other story for her. Will Mildred come back to Atakan? At what cost? What other secret he is hiding?

This plot is too complicated to grasp in a summary and I seriously think you should go in blind. There is a slight love triangle kind part but no real love so keep that in mind. Mildred has been humiliated, used, abused, manipulated, betrayed and what not but she has some beautiful bravery and resilience in her. She battled her demons even when she was at worst. Atakan and Mildred's dynamics is so fascinating and way too spicy to handle. The chemistry was never a problem. They were burning for each other. Atakan was simply cruel to her and she didn't know if she can trust him. But our fae prince has miles long secrets. It will make all the sense at the end when all his pawns will line up and he will execute a daredevil plan to win it all He will emerge as the ultimate all powerful winner at this vicious battle. I was definitely shocked at the numerous turns in the story but part three was just mind blowing. The part with Vane the Unseelie King set me heart on a trouble some path like Mildred and I hope it's not the last time I am seeing him. At the end, Mildred and Atakan's mating bond ended up being all consuming. They started as hurt and pain but they found true otherworldly love. The way Atakan protected Mildred through all his darkness was truly heartaching. His anger, his viciousness, his twisted words..all had a purpose but you won't know soon. Mildred is his perfect queen with her soft yet fierce heart. The whole Fae kingdom with the fantastic creatures and nature was mesmerizing.

"I want you. I want you as much as I loath you- so much, it feels like I can't breathe."

Yet another fun fantasy from Ella Fields! I always enjoy stepping into her worlds, as they're consistently entertaining and fast reads. Amid Clouds and Bones is in line with her others in that we have a sort of enemies to lovers, love interests from different kingdoms, with speedy action but not a lot of world building. She JUST scrapes enough together so that we know enough about the warring rules, but not enough we know anything in regards to the history or geography of this world.

I thought this story got a little off-point in the middle. Our heroine Mildred spends a good 30% of the book in a different kingdom, away from the love interest and side characters we had barely started to get to know. She spends so long there I honestly questioned who the love interest was here- Atacan or Vane. I think it wouldn't helped in Mildred had spent more time actually connecting with Atacan before she left, but the two had spent barely any time alone together and what time they DID have was more about playing court games and trying to torment the other.

I did like how in the end, Atacan was brutally honest with Mildred about all of his secrets and why he had kept them (and boy oh boy there were a lot). He was fully willing to beg to get her to stay with him, to allow him the chance to prove they belonged together.

Such an amazing read! I love ella fields writing style. This book was amazing, I wasn’t in the mood for a slow burn I didn’t know this one was until I began, but even though it’s a slow burn the TENSION is sizzling hot and when you reach the spice it’s well worth it. I loved the banter between the two main characters. There were times I wanted to throttle Atakan. I deducted a star because I’m not a HUGE fan about love triangles. I get why it was in there but I didn’t like how it fit into the story. If you have Kindle Unlimited RUN don’t walk and go read this book for yourself you won’t regret it.

Guys I read this in under 24 hours 😱 Could not put it down.
The enemies to lovers banter, the witty and smart FMC, the way I couldn't tell exactly what was going to happen next... ugh it was all just SO good!!
If you love lovers in denial and hate to love you vibes, then you must read this one.

Ella Fields has mastered writing fantasy romance she has definitely found her spot in this genre! This story was amazing! I’m completely obsessed! This was a well developed and descriptive story with the Queen of angst signature writing the characters were probably my favorite yet! The chemistry was phenomenal the spice was spicy the sexual tension was so good and the overall story was everything! This story drew me in from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through! I definitely recommend and I can’t wait for what comes next!
