Lumberjanes, Vol. 4 finally delivers a story line in which Jen gets a chance to shine. Yay, Jen!

We are also treated to a bit of background about Camp Lumberjane itself.

Also, the weather takes a turn as a winter blizzard appears out of nowhere... in the middle of summer.

Things are awfully weird around here. Good thing the Lumberjanes have each other.

Recommended for the adventurous reader and timid reader and everyone in-between.

In typical story of my life bad-timing, just when I made my first negative criticism of this series not packing enough heat Noelle Stevenson and co. come with this uplifting volume where a survival camping trip becomes much more when Lumberjane lore of the past comes back to threaten everyone. Yep, backstories, overt character builds and a huge gender-related sub-plot brings the goods in the best volume so far! 8 out of 12. And some of these variant covers are to die for!

So I got all whiny about Vol. 3, which is the trade published right after Lumberjanes transitioned from a limited series to an ongoing one. I wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. They changed the artists all around (I hate when comics do that), and the story felt less silly and frenetic. It wasn't bad, just different. But Brooke Allen is back as the artist here in Vol. 4 (hooray!), and the story felt more like it did in Vols. 1 & 2 again, except with slight differences (there would have to be, for it to keep being ongoing; it's a different kind of writing to sustain a long story than a short one).

We also get some tantalizing backstory on the camp; what it means to really be a Lumberjane; the mysterious camp director, Rosie (who is a badass); and the Bear Woman.

The real backbone of the story, though, is all the younger Lumberjanes coming together to rescue their camp counselor, my beloved Jen. Jen is seriously my favorite character. I don't know why. Maybe it's something to do with how earnest she is, and how fond of rules, but underneath she is A WILD WOMAN. So they're all out camping, in the middle of summer, and it starts to snowstorm for no reason at all, and they are attacked by antlered wolf monsters. Rosie comes to the rescue (on a giant moose), but Jen gets left behind. Only, she's rescued, too, by a woman named Abigail who lives in a giant hidden house in the forest.

Rosie forbids the Lumberjanes from going after Jen, especially since Rosie knows Abigail from years ago, and she definitely knows way more about what lives in the forest (and what's up with the camp) than they do. But Friendship to the Max!, and who cares about rules. They love Jen. They are going to rescue her. It is a tale of revenge, being lost in the snow, and monsters who aren't really monsters if you look at them in the right light.

Also, of Jen:

Can't wait for Vol. 5.

I love my Lumberjanes. There's friendship and love and big group hugs, adventures and bravery and dangerous beasts, fun and humour and always an incredibly good time.

Story
I picked up this series because it combines two things I love: camping/scouting and fantasy. I wasn't really sure where this series was going until now, it just sort of seemed to be a mash-up of sorts with no well defined direction.

That was fine by me though, and I've enjoyed the three previous trades enough to have picked up the first volume of the hardcover versions.

This volume was definitely a step up though. Some of the mysteries surrounding the camp where they are staying are starting to gain more definition, and I'm very intrigued!

This series continues to be a delight, and I'm looking forward to picking up the 5th volume as soon as I can get it from my library.

Artwork
The art is great as always, and I think this story works better as a graphic novel, than it would as a traditional one.

This is definitely my favorite volume yet! This one really takes this story to another level.

This volume has a really concrete plot and it's filled with intrigue and mystery as we are introduced to a new character. We also get a ton of backstory and learn some interesting things about the Lumberjanes world.

I think I've already said this, but I'm bringing it up again; this needs to be a tv show. It's supposedly becoming a movie, and there isn't a ton of info about it but it looks like it's happening. That's disappointing to me because this series lends itself so well to a tv format. The story arc doesn't fit a movie. I see this as a weekly animated show with each episode focusing on some sort of adventure with a supernatural creature. This idea of a wacky camp with funny characters would make an awesome Gravity Falls-esque show, but that will probably never happen.

Anyway, loving this series and can't wait for the next volume!

This loses a star because there wasn't really anything new revealed. I think I'm more annoyed by the lack of answers than the Lumberjanes are.

All I can say is that if Cub Scouts had been as much fun as Lumberjanes, I probably would have stuck with them longer. This comic is deeply satisfying to my inner twelve year old.

We start with the ‘Janes on a camping trip, when a blizzard strikes … in the middle of summer (which would seem to indicate that the camp is located somewhere in Michigan or Wisconsin. ;-) ) Jen becomes separated from the rest of the group, but is rescued by a mysterious woman, Abigail, who seems to have been a Lumberjane at some point in the past. What is her secret? Will Jen be reunited with the others? And how does the legendary beast, the Grootslang, figure into it all?

As always, Lumberjanes is perfectly delightful, brimming over with enthusiasm and excitement. When you were a kid, this is what you imagined that scouting was like. There's just a boundless, gleeful energy to this title that's difficult to capture in mere words. You need to experience it for yourself. Highly recommended!

This was a great volume. We GET BACK STORY! A Few of the dots are connected. We learn who Bear woman used to be and we see Rosie back at camp when she was a girl. We learn that this is something about protecting the weird things we keep seeing.

Rosie and Abigail have history together and it's a great story. Jen learns to drive and the girls are up to their fun. It also sounds like Jo might be trans - not sure and it didn't spell it out, just an allusion.

The art is kinetic as ever and as colorful. There are new beasts and new places. Winter hits in July.

Such an excellent story. This was so enjoyable. I loved this volume. I can't wait for the next one.

Love the art in these books and the stories are great! I hope these manage to reach more young people and they will take the time to look up the names of famous women in history. It reveals a sad hole in our educational system that we all know about George Washington but not Maria V. Klenova or Cecilia H. Payne? Our history books are entirely too male dominated!

Joyful, gorgeous, and with added moral complexity that's deepening the world of the series. But OF COURSE the one message keeps on carrying through: Friendship to the Max! I love these graphic novels SO MUCH. (And I am sooooooooo sad that this is the last full volume to be written by Noelle Stevenson!)

So, after a below par Volume 3, Lumberjanes Vol 4 is a huge improvement and provides us with some much needed backstory between Rosie (the camp's leader) and Abigail (her friend from summer camp).

We also get a lovely insight into Jen's character which is touching and seals her bond with the lumberjanes team.

I'm sooo very glad that Brooke Allen is once again the illustrator, perfecting the characters we have come to love and recognise. The colours are bright and vivid which creates a striking and chaotic atmosphere which often follows the lumberjanes wherever they go.

I'm not going to give the plot away but this volume really does focus on friendship - friendship within the group, between their leader and summer camp friend and between lumberjanes and boy scouts.

If you've read the series so far, you MUST read this terrific sequel!
