Rate this book

A foul-mouthed bounty hunter and assassin, Jane Doe is not your average witch. Working for the ruling magical class in Britain - the Merlins - she takes on the jobs and creatures that other members of the magical community wouldn't touch with a six-foot spell staff.

As rumours spread that a powerful being wants to free a horrific hound from its prison on Dartmoor, Jane and her assistant, Dawn, are tasked by their Handler to find the perpetrator and stop them using any means possible.

Hell Hound is not the greatest urban fantasy around but it has so much potential.

I found many things that annoyed me about the book - the references to other authors, the appalling jumps in continuity, lack of editing, etc. But, at the same time, I loved the characters, I loved the world-building and the action. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next installment to see if some of the irritants have been ironed and hope to enjoy it even more.

Really different

Wow, this is a different take on supernatural creatures. There's a bit of everything here and it's all set in today's times. I did enjoy this book and will read the next one.

Has promise

This novel starts with a bang and doesn't let go. It's non -stop action from start to finish. I can tell the author loves Jim Butcher. I'm not personally a fan of all the cursing, but if you don't mind that, you might enjoy this fast-paced novel. It's just not my cup of tea. I think with more practice and a good editor this writer could develop though.

Like other reviews here, I have to agree the book needs a good editing to iron out the bumps. I really enjoyed this urban fantasy full of action from the first page and loved the fact the main characters are both women; and women of colour at that. (also the fact one is a shape shifting lesbian is great!) I liked the allusions to other UF books - especially Harry Dresden as well as the pockets of different time periods in British history.

I’ve known Matthew personally through the book world for a while and worked with him on a book in the good old days. Whilst we have estranged I have kept an eye on his writing and am really pleased with this work. It’s well written and I enjoyed the characters and Matt has always been great at the people aspects of his work. Give it a go and it’ll see you right

I liked the characters (especially Lebowski). I enjoyed the plot. I could even get past the excess of action (even though well-written) at the expense of character development and meaningful character arcs. What I couldn't get past was the appalling lack of editing or proofreading.

UPDATED: However, in response to my previous review, the author has explained in the comments below why I received what was not meant to be the final draft of the book. These things do happen. It is unfortunate (especially for the author!) so I've changed my star rating.

If by some chance you receive a copy where there are words missing or just plain incorrect, note that you have been one of the unlucky ones, and try to turn a blind eye and enjoy the fun.
