Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel

Rate this book
One of the great political friendships of the modern world, as told through key moments that shaped the twenty-first century Today, we know US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as two of the world’s most influential leaders, together at the center of some of the biggest controversies and most impressive advancements of our time. But while their friendship has been the subject of both scrutiny and admiration, few know the full story. Taking office at the height of the 2008 global recession, Obama was keenly aware of the fractured relationship between the US and Europe. And for her part, Merkel was suspicious of the charismatic newcomer who had captivated her country. Faced with the challenges of globalization, the two often clashed over policy, but—as the first Black president and first female chancellor—they shared a belief that democracy could uplift the world. United by this conviction, they would forge a complicated but inspiring partnership. Dear Barack is a thoroughly researched document of the parallel trajectories that led to Obama and Merkel meeting on the world stage and the trials, both personal and political, that they confronted in office. At times in the leaders’ own words, the book details such events as Merkel’s historic acceptance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and the 2013 NSA spying scandal, demonstrating the highs and lows of this extraordinary alliance. A story of camaraderie at a global scale, Dear Barack shows that it is possible for political adversaries to establish bonds of respect—and even friendship—in the service of the free world.

A timely release, given the recent German Elections and the retirement reflections of Angela Merkel, comes Dear Barack by Claudia Clark. It’s subtitled The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel which clearly states the nature of the book. The book begins with their initial frosty relationship and covers various events and dealings until Barrack left office in 2015 at which time they were the best of friends. Containing thirteen chapters, covering a variety of topics from the World Financial Crisis, G20 meetings, NSA Spy Scandal, Climate Change, Iran Nuclear Agreement, State visits and much more, this is an insight into the most two most respected world leaders, with clear analysis and accompanying citations. The strength of their relationship, despite its ups and down and at times varying position on issues, shows the character of two intelligent heads of governments. Overall, a well-balanced analysis that isn’t overtly political and an enjoyable read with a four-star rating. Footnotes and a helpful index are provided but there was no accompanying bibliography to follow up particular aspects. With many thanks to Disruption Books and the author, for an uncorrected proof copy for review purposes. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own and are made without fear or favour.

The book gives a clear image of two political leaders whose friendship shaped the twenty- first century. In this book the author has deeply traces the friendship of Obama and Merkel in meticulous detail with charming anecdotes and expertly places their bond within the historical contexts of other world leaders.

In the early chapters of the book the author shares the details of the family background of Obama and Merkel and the different situations that lead their personality traits and a strong foundation. She has laid emphasis of all the facts of how Dr. Angela Dorothea Merkel became the first former East German Chancellor at the age of 51, the youngest.

While Obama real rise to political fame came when he delivered the keynote speech at Democratic National Convention in Boston in July ,2004. In His "Audacity of Hope " speech , he passionately argued that there's not a liberal America and a conservative America , there's the United States of America..... Slowly progressing, he became the first Black President on November4,2008.

Faced with the challenges of globalization, the two often clashed over policy, but—as the first Black president and first female chancellor—they shared a belief that democracy could uplift the world. United by this conviction, they would forge a complicated but inspiring partnership.

In the Obama -Merkel working relationship, the biggest point of contention concerned the economic crisis or the Great Recession which began in December,2009. Obama and Merkel differed in one notable way: the waybthey answered journalists questions during press conferences.

A story of camaradie at a global scale- Dear Barack shows that it is possible for political adversaries to establish bonds of respect and even friendship in the service of the free world.

I learned a lot while reading this fabulous, well researched and full of facts book that gave me a clear image of the hardship and problems faced by political leaders on a world wide scale performing their responsibilities.

I loved reading this book and would recommend this historical book to all.
Happy Reading!

The never-before-told story of the friendship between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former US president Barack Obama- icons who changed each other and the world. This book breaks new ground and in so doing is a real testament to hope. Claudia has pulled back a curtain from the pages of history and given us a glimpse into the remarkable and yet not well-known friendship between these two leaders.

This is a very honest, well-researched and wonderfully written book. This book shows the greatest and probably the most stronger bonding between two political leaders. Claudia invites us into the story of two special friends whose life examples make visible the great potential of what a human being can become. This book will awaken your humanity and summon the fierce bond, bravery, and power we all innately possess. This is a moving story of two giants separated by race, religion, culture and nationality, and yet profoundly united in their dedication to a deeply interconnected world of peace and compassion. The author certainly had a knack for pulling this book together and deserves a lot of credit for telling the real story.

Overall, this is an exhaustively researched, crisply told, and chilling book. I enjoyed this book and learned about details and people I wasn’t aware of.
Some readers I know found the book heavy-going. I didn't. I didn't know much about the political world and the politics, so discovering anything related to this matter was very interesting news to me. This is an inspiring story worth reading. This is the most inspiring, insightful, hopeful book I've read in a long time.

This review is based on an uncorrected ARC, which I received in exchange for an honest review.

In the introduction to Dear Barack, Clark gives her goals for the book, which is that it should 'entertain, educate, and inspire'. To a very large extent, she has managed to reach all three goals.

In particular, the book serves to educate. I confess that I didn't know a lot about Chancellor Merkel before reading this book. Clark details Merkel's life story, showing how she ended up as Germany's 'Muti'. She also outlines Obama's biography, which I was more familiar with. The book then takes a deep dive into all public meetings by the two leaders during the Obama presidency, including various summits and speeches and press conferences. Each event is analyzed also in relation to the key political issues of relevance at the time, for example Russia's invasion of Crimea or the Iran nuclear program. These issues and others give a framework for Clark to make the case for the growing solidity of the alliance and friendship between these two leaders, and to show the benefits of such partnerships on the world stage. An afterward makes clear the contrast with Merkel's relationship with Trump, which even more sets out the dangers of not playing well with others in the political arena.

While such analysis can easily become tedious to read, it was very readable here. The writing is solid, and humorous details are given which help keep the flow of the read. The goal of inspiring was a little harder to pull off, though that's not the fault of the book. In a world which is so polarized, inspiration is hard to generate. That being said, Clark was able to use the Obama-Merkel partnership to show what is possible, and she ended the book on a positive note hoping that other strong alliances which might change our world for the better will emerge sooner rather than later. To that extent, I also found myself inspired.

In short, Dear Barack does exactly what the name implies, describing the political relationship between President Barack Obama and Chancellor Angela Merkel which developed during the Obama presidency. It does so in a way that keeps the reader's (or more to the point, this reader's) interest. Though I knew that Obama and Merkel had a strong working relationship, I would not have seen this partnership as a logical subject for a book - but now that I've read the book, I can see that it clearly is. I am pleased I had a chance to read and review this, and would recommend it to anyone looking to know more about German-American relations, or about either the President or the Chancellor.

"Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barak Obama and Angela Merkel" by Claudia Clark can be considered as a unique story between two protagonists who happened to be the leaders of two world's most powerful  countries in the world.
Claudia Clark who  was a champion for women's rights from an early age, an activist and politically concerned about local and foreign events which changed the world map, can be considered as a reliable reference to those who seek to know the past and the present history that combines both USA to Germany ( amazingly 100 pages of references)
The book starts with a note and an introduction from the author to pave the reader's way for a thorough understanding of why she had chosen Germany and why Angela Merkel in particular.
If we go deeper in our reading, we find that the choice of the two characters was not arbitrary, but was very genius.  Barack Obama is unique because he was the first black president of USA  while Angela Merkel was the first lady to be elected chancellor of Germany.
The book is divided into 13 chapters, all of which flow  in one direction, which is that the basis of the relationship that unites them is not politics at all, but rather a relationship that transcends what is more wonderful than that.  Of course, without denying the existence of politics in all of this, but its presence does not go beyond the fact that it is an additional element  implemented by the circumstances of time and place.
Solid friendship ties built in the midst of huge tides and  rapid changes in the events and the world order.  They have both survived and witnessed major changes in the world map starting from the collapse of the Berline wall to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The book is really worth reading because what we see and what we hear about politicians on the news is totally different from what they truly are. "The book explores how their relationship evolved, transforming them from world leaders skeptical of one another to good friends and close confidants."
I'd really like to recommend it to my dear followers, please go on and read it, you won't regret it.

Barack Obama, 1st African American president & democrate

And Angela Merkel 1st female chancellor of Germany.

One thing which was common in their leadership was their principles & vision to strengthen Democratic values around World.

This is one of the reasons they had a stronger connection & partnership to deliver the mutual goals & virtues.

We remember US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as two of the world's most influential leaders. Both of them have played an instrumental role in shaping world politics.

However, there is an even more interesting role of their work relationship that has intrigued the global audience.

Their equation is the central theme of this book 'Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel.'

Author Claudia Clark has put extensive research into developing this book that revolves around brewing personal and political relationships of the two global leaders. Obama and Merkel had a bit rough start given the existing tension between the US and Europe. But the two also believed in the power of democracy to restore order in the world.

The book traces their relationship right from the time Obama took charge of the US office to the end of his tenure. It includes how the two went about developing a cordial relationship and influenced each others' dispositions on the global stage. It also brings to our knowledge how Merkel received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the 2013 NSA spying scandal, demonstrating the highs and lows of this extraordinary alliance.

Dear Barack was an educative read for me that filled me in on different global events. I liked how the author gave the background story of our two characters and then gradually brought forth their camaraderie. The language is easy-to-read and the narrative is well-researched and presented to interest readers.

I believe this book objectively analyses the relationship between Obama and Merkel and proves how two global leaders could be friends and still keep the interest of their countrymen. Anyone who shares a deep interest in geopolitics will certainly enjoy reading this book.

Dear Barack' describes the history of the partnership between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Barack Obama from its chilly beginning to the first year of Trump's presidency, when the first black president of the United States was missed by no one more painfully than by his closest international ally and friend, Angela Merkel. Clark's book makes one aware that with Angela Merkel's withdrawal, an era of international politics is finally coming to an end, and she knows how to review it in a winning and entertaining way.

I was in the audience both for candidate Barack Obama's first speech, in July 2008 in Berlin at the Victory Column, and for his first visit after his term in office, which was to bring him together with the Chancellor on the stage of the Protestant Kirchentag in front of the Brandenburg Gate in May 2017. The latter event is described in 'Dear Barack. The meeting took place under the gloomy star of Donald Trump's errant outbursts.

The book made me recall the period of Obama's presidency, and the dense narrative made me realize again what an eventful time it was politically. Now, hardly anyone of the appropriate age will have forgotten the financial crisis of 2008, for example, but it is nevertheless surprising to read the multi-layered events with which the new administration in Washington and relatively new ones in Paris and Berlin were confronted, once again described in such detail. The fact that Clark focuses on the personalities of her two protagonists as well as their relationship to each other is a pleasant trick that facilitates the flow of reading because it is guided by a stimulating narrative. The author does not lapse into the purely anecdotal - of course there are a few of those - but manages to paint a comprehensive contemporary historical picture from the end of the 'hot' Iraq war to 2018, when NATO was seemingly on the verge of disintegration, in a seemingly light manner.

Although the sympathy of the author, who obviously sought to paint the Merkel and Obama team as a statesmanlike antithesis to Obama's immediate successor, to her actors cannot be denied, she nevertheless maintains a distance from her subject. She does not spare critical remarks, but she is obviously fascinated by the dynamics of this transatlantic duo, of which no political observer had foreseen such a close partnership. She begins her book with brief biographical portraits, and although she emphasizes the commonality of the two as outsiders in their respective political establishments, it becomes clear that the differences in character and even more crucially; political orientation made Merkel and Obama the most interesting tandem at least since Valéry Giscard d'Estaing and Helmut Schmidt.

Clark refrains from psychoanalyzing the politicians, which sets 'Dear Barack' pleasantly apart from many political biographies. It is a character study in which political events nevertheless take precedence and political significance is still wrested from every personal idiosyncrasy or biographical peculiarity of the protagonists. This may not appeal to everyone. I was struck by this strictly political trait as pleasant in contrast to the pseudo-weighty depth-psychological descriptions that authors of politicial biographies often presume to give.

Cooperation on security policy takes up a lot of space, and it is surprising how much value Obama apparently placed on the support of the German chancellor. In three respects, the book can be read as a plea for the strength of 'soft diplomacy'. In the astonishing and improbable rise of the two protagonists, in the transformation of their relationship with each other, which evolved into an influential partnership, and ultimately how this enabled Germany and its head of government, despite a militarily subordinate position and a comparatively small population, to achieve such influence and prestige that during Donald Trump's tenure Angela Merkel was regularly referred to by American journalists as the leader of the free world.

From a German perspective, one might miss some of the issues and debates that moved the country during Merkel's tenure, but that would be beyond the scope. It may well be that future historians will view the parallel terms of Merkel and Obama as a time of upheaval but also transition. It is indispensable for understanding today's international conflicts. Claudia Clark's book 'Dear Barack' explains it well. I can recommend.

I quite liked the treating of the book and as it progressed it got interesting.
The author has focussed on Barak and Merkel of Germany and have beautifully written about both of them as individuals before they were leaders. The book is an insight on the relationship of these two leaders and an analysis of their friendship. The books showed how, even in ups and downs, in the times of varying issues, these two individuals worked their excellent minds and used the strength of their relationship.
Over all, it is not a boring book as I was expecting it to be and though it was a bit slow for me, it was enjoyable.

An ambitious, well-researched and highly readable dual biography. The book is well-researched and heavily footnoted; there is also a comprehensive bibliography. I didn't know more about politics but I have always been curious to know how it all works. Through this book, Claudia tells a compelling tale of the friendship of two great leaders, Angela Merkel and Barack Obama. While these two individuals could not have been more different in their upbringing and education (and their respective pathways to the legal profession), they forged a friendship in which they both ultimately placed a significant role in each other's lives. This book is so encouraging when it comes to world peace. It is a demonstration of what can happen when people choose to engage in friendship.

I found this book really interesting and quite amusing in parts. Claudia is an accomplished writer who writes with great ease and wit. She has successfully depicted a portrait of a long and extremely happy friendship. An interesting story delightfully told. Very Impressive and highly readable. A balanced and vivid account of a friendship which was both remarkable and strikingly down-to-earth. The author has written a marvellous book. She has a wonderful way of making the events of the time interesting for a general reader.

I laughed, I cried, and I read the whole book with enjoyment. Very interesting book with a lot of information I've never come across before. Enjoyed it very much. I found this book thoroughly interesting and hard to put down. This is a flawless historical story about friendship. Highly recommended!

The book, "Dear Barack" shows an admiring friendship between two political leaders who seemed like never-meeting lines.
The book is about the political friendship between the US President Barack Obama and the Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The book tells us the complete story of their friendship being the center of investigation as well as applause.
Barack Obama and Angela Merkel are known to be two of the world's most powerful leaders.
They were found together in many controversies as well as in many developments.
During the 2008 global recession, when Obama took office, he was completely aware about the cracked association between the United States and Europe, while, on the other hand, Angela was sceptical of the newly arrived fascinating guest who was bewitching the country.
They together faced a lot of challenges on globalization fighting against each other over policy.
But as dutiful humans of the country, both of them believed that Democracy could elevate the whole world and this belief connected them in an inspiring political friendship.
The First Black President and the First Female Chancellor share an amazingly admiring friendship which is an inspiration to every generation.
This book is well-written containing perfectly a detailed presentation describing certain important events which lead to the union of the two powerful leaders.

This book looks not only at the powerful and beneficial friendship between two world leaders, but also at their individual backgrounds that were outside the norm of their predecessors in their respective roles.

Merkel grew up in East Germany, the daughter of a Lutheran pastor and an English teacher. She recalls the Berlin Wall going up and coming down, and rose to prominence valuing science and fact.

Barack's path took him from Hawaii to Kenya to Pasadena, New York, and Chicago. His background working in law and civil rights uniquely positioned him for a moment in time when the rights of many were on the chopping block.

That these two found common ground despite her conservatism and his progressiveness is a marvel, and yet their common ground united them.

Merkel became the first East German and woman Chancellor.
Obama became the first Black President.

They often consulted and supported each other, spoke to each other in familiar terms and seemed to understand each other's way of processing and making important decisions that required proper deliberation and consideration. They were united by the conviction democracy could uplift the world.

I particularly appreciated the wealth of research that had gone into each quote and factoid about this partnership with thorough footnotes throughout. I've seen few meaningful books delve into friendships of world leaders unless there was a hanging question of romance but there's none of that here - it's purely a unification, likemindedness and a recognition that being the "firsts" of each of their own countries meant they each faced extra but sometimes shared challenges that made how they respond to national and international issues all the more important, as they represented not only themselves and those like them, but also future women and people of color that would take on these roles in the future. Both Merkel and Obama had to pick and choose their battles - not shy away from their backgrounds but also know when not to take the bait that some media wanted them to lean into. For all the various gasps related to both of their rises to power, their administrations have overall been the most scandal-free terms in decades.

As the time soon approaches that Merkel will no longer be in office, this seems a timely read to acknowledge an era many of us have just observed. I found this book to be hopeful, all the more in the face of the last 4-5 years - a reminder than unity and peacefully forged international relationships are not out of reach and - if we're lucky - we may see two leaders like these again.

Claudia Clark, Dear Barack The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel, Disruption Books NY, 2021

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this uncorrected proof for review.

With the partnership of Angela Merkel and Barack Obama over the eight years of the Obama Government as the focus, and a dedication to John Lewis, Stacy Abrahams, Beto O’Rourke and citizens who fight for Americans right to vote, Claudia Clark’s book had every possibility of being a winner for me. I was not mistaken. My only negative feeling is that sometimes the repetition of the nature of the closeness of the relationship became a bit cloying – but then, Claudia Clark would be fully justified in telling me what nonsense, this is what the book is about- the relationship between two politicians! It is, but there is so much more for anyone who feels (erroneously or not) as I did at times, to raise this book into the ‘must read’ category. It really is a winner.

Beginning with an author’s note in which Claudia Clark provides a background to why she chose to write on this topic, the book comprises chapters with informative titles; photographs; an Afterword that takes in the change of President and Party in the 2016 American Presidential election; copious and detailed notes and a good index, meeting the necessary academic criteria. However, as academically sound as it is, Clark does not forget that her audience will include those who are intrigued by Merkel and Obama, those who welcome an insight into foreign affairs and relationships between heads of state: an audience who revel in a good read. Clark fulfils these criteria admirably also – Dear Barack is a wonderful amalgam of character portraits; revelation of the value and intricacies of diplomatic understandings; insight into the importance of leadership in difficult political environments, at home and abroad; and accessible lively writing.

Clark is a consummate observer of the relationship between Merkel and Obama from its beginnings in the rejection of Obama’s (possible) desire to speak before the Brandenburg Gate before he became President and the developing friendship following this inauspicious beginning, to his speech there in June 2013, and after. Clark follows the burgeoning relationship between these two events, marking as they do a rejection, and then a wholehearted acceptance of one leader by another, and its reciprocation. Her insight lets the reader into the expansion of the professional and personal relationship during the succeeding years, until the end of Barack Obama’s Presidency, and officially a short time afterwards. She provides useful detail about the way in which what would have been major crises were restrained by the friendship and respect between Obama and Merkel.

Through the relationship between the major characters, at times including commentary on their spouses, officials around them, and other world leaders, Claudia Clark weaves together an engrossing story of political events throughout the period. Dear Barack establishes a surfeit of knowledge that is accessible to readers for whom foreign affairs, diplomatic ties, dealing with trade agreements, incursions into other countries that need to be addressed, refugee crises and policies on monumental issues such as climate change are part of a world that is not always easy to comprehend. At the same time, it adds a dimension to the ‘facts’ that may be well understood and known by experts in the field. This dimension is the purpose of this book, and one that is accomplished with decisive success.

Freedom isn't free. It shouldn't be a bragging point that 'Oh, I don't get involved in politics,' as if that makes someone cleaner. No, that makes you derelict of duty in a republic. Liars and panderers in government would have a much harder time of it if so many people didn't insist on their right to remain ignorant and blindly agreeable. The line as stated above bears sheer poignancy with the overall theme and context of the book at hand for politics as a term has been given many connotations, however, the common theme that remains prevalent is that the interpretation is a narrow one ridden with greed and lust for power, however, a different side to the same is presented in the book at present and how the same happens would be briefly presented below.

Being 336 pages long, the overall theme of the book revolves around the coming into power of Barrack Obama and its influence over Europe and when one adds to the equation, the not-so-good ties of Germany with Germany, however, a dynamism was established resulting in positive implications. Delving further, the book has been further divided into 13 Chapters and the first one is titled “The Arc of Our Lives” which tends to mark the introduction of the book and tends to depict the period of the Cold war of the 1960s and recounts the first memory of Angela Markel while she was 7 years old. As the chapters progress further, the reader can see that all the chapters have been divided in such a manner that they paint a perfect picture of the existing scenario and shows the real side of things and at the same time the author has ensured an even progression of the plot which continues till the end.

The writing style of the book has been kept simple and lays more stress on painting the real and honest side of things and when summed with the writing style of the book and thus painting a cohesive picture.

Before reading ‘Dear Barack’, I was of course aware that former President Obama and former Chancellor Merkel had met several times in a professional capacity, as 2 of the world's most powerful leaders. However, I had no idea of the true friendship and partnership between the two until reading Claudia Clark’s debut.

Politicians can be experts at making people see what is not there, but I truly do think that the friendship between them is genuine, and Claudia’s book explores that relationship, from his first trip to Germany as a presidential candidate in 2008 (when Chancellor Merkel would not allow Obama to speak at the Brandenburg Gate) to their farewell visit in November 2016. In fact, his final phone call as President was to the Chancellor!

I think the remarks that President Obama made during one of his final trips to Germany in November 2016 sums up his feelings about the Chancellor best:

“I have valued Chancellor Merkel’s thinking and perspective on a whole range of global issues throughout my presidency. You have been a trusted partner throughout my entire presidency—longer than any world leader—and I value your judgment. I thank you for your commitment to our alliance and the values and human rights for which we stand. And I’m grateful for our personal friendship.”

At the heart of this book is a portrait of a strong, intelligent woman who through hard work was able to maneuver through a predominantly male political system and elected Germany’s first female Chancellor with an openness and honesty rarely seen.

‘Dear Barack’ is a thoughtful, engaging snapshot of a partnership between two of the strongest political leaders of the 21st Century.

"Now, taking leave from my partner and friend, well, yes, it is hard. If you've worked together with somebody very well, leave-taking is very difficult. But we are politicians. We all know that democracy lives off change. So, in the United States of America, the Constitution has very clear stipulations on this. It's a tough rule—eight years and that's it. Out goes the president and a new one comes in. . . . But personal—we have freedom of movement in the whole of Germany, so if we want to see each other, well, I'm game." - Obama.

--

Before pouring my thoughts on the book, let me tell you what inspires Claudia Clark to write this book.

"As I watched Obama and Merkel's final joint press conference in November 2016, I was immediately struck by how visibly upset Merkel appeared when questioned by the media about this being their last such event together in an official capacity." - Claudia.

That was when Claudia thought of documenting the eight-year working relationship that Barack and Merkel have had. Through a detailed analysis of their speeches, she revealed to us the relationship dynamics these two possess. I feel none of us had forgotten the time when the first African American took the seat of the USA's president and a female for the first time was embracing the position of Chancellor of Germany. To further enrich that experience, "Dear Barack" is the book to read next.

Claudia illustrates the partnership between Obama and Merkel, highlighting how their relationship evolved from extreme apprehension to profound respect and admiration. The book didn't just restrict to the Barack-Merkel friendship but also sends profound messages about how international alliances are essential in today's globalised world.

"I think it is worth mentioning what this book is and what it is not. Although it is a book about two politicians, it is not a "political book" per se. The book discusses politics and policy issues, but only with respect to how those matters impacted the partnership and friendship of these two leaders. One does not have to agree with all (or any) of the policies they have supported to get something valuable out of this book."

What I really loved about this book is how well researched it is! The author didn't fail to mention any nitty-gritty details from their regime. From the 2008 financial crisis, Eurozone crisis, Crisis in Iran and Libya, Paris Agreement, and Free trade agreement between Germany and US, to Trump taking the seat in 2016. And how the US-German relation gets affected owing to that! I have loved reading this book. If you love reading books on world politics, I urge you not to miss this one.

It may not be a subject much preferred by people, it might not be the most cutting edge conversation starter but then it does start a lot of conversations, conversations that have the power to probably change the world, for better or for worse. America's first President of colour, Barrack Obama stirred the whole world when with his intellectualism, charisma and political prowess he claimed to be called Mr President and won. During his long seat, he had had to make a lot of statements, and take a lot of decisions. Some of those very decisions will in future make him enemies while the others bring him, friends. Angela Merkel was one friend that he will earn as a lifelong.

No, it's not that Barrack and Angela saw eye to eye over every political decision and discussion but Angela knew what it was like to be the first in the world that prefers orthodox practices. Angela too was the first female leader of the kind. This is a book that brings about their friendship, their acquaintance, a lot of that in their own words but mostly the invaluable time they had spent together discussing the politics of the world.

The author was brought up in an environment that gives a lot of priority to what is happening in the world, with a mother who had been initiated oversees our author will quite often get to listen to uplifting and important topics. Although being an American she also developed quite a love for a foreign nation, Germany. Maybe that was the beginning of a better understanding of it all. It couldn't have just been researched and compiled together, it took a lot of faith in one's work and a practical understanding of what they are claiming. I must say this is a deeply researched and greatly understated political work. I am not quite much into politics but here are some topics that will find a place in your interests if you are from this world. If you get your hands on this book, you will be delighted to read about Russia's Crimea annexation and one more thing that interested me has to be the 2013 NSA scandal.

Book : Dear barack
Author : Claudia clark
Genre : fiction

The book give a clear image of two political leaders whose friendship shaped the 21st century. This book looks not only at the powerful and beneficial friendship between the two world's leader but also at their individual background that were outside the norm of their predecessors in their respective role.
The book made me recall the period of Obama's presidency and the dense narrative made me realize again what am eventful time it was politically.
"Dear barack"describes the history of the partnership between German Chancellor Angela Merkel & barack Obama from its chill beginning to the first year of Trump's presidency, when first black president was missed by no one more painfully than by his closest international ally & friend angela Merkel. Clark's book make's one aware that the Angela Merkel's withdrawal an era of international politics is finally coming to an end, she knows how to revive it in a winning & entertaining way.

Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel is a powerful example of literary realism. Claudia Clark did an outstanding job of describing the friendship and making of two of the world's most influential politicians. In this book, the author shows the epic friendship, strong partnership, and extraordinary leadership of two of the world’s most remarkable politicians whom we admire the most. One is none other than Mr. Brack Obama, who is a leader to lookup to and be inspired, proud father and husband who believes in equal partnership. He is a well-known leader. Another is Mrs. Angela Dortha Merkel. She is the first women chancellor of Germany. I really adore how the author has packed a handful of knowledge in just 350 pages, which is really impressive.

The book depicts the political friendship between these two influential leaders and displays how two people can become good friends despite having different backgrounds, cultural differences, political disagreements, and different ideologies in life. They share same views to make their country a better place to live. The author also provides us with the background of both the leaders. Barack Obama became the first black president of US and the most powerful person in the world. Angela Merkel is fascinating because, as a woman and as an East German, she defied considerable odds to become the Chancellor of Germany, and then stayed in that position for 16 years. She obtained a doctorate in quantum chemistry in 1986 and worked as a research scientist until 1989.

This book is so inspiring and explore how their relationship evolved, transforming them from world leaders skeptical of one another to good friends and close confidants. This is a full of facts, well researched book. It is interesting, informative and entertaining all at once.

Just an amazing account of what perseverance, courage, determination, right decision making, statesman ship looks like. Reading this book fills me up with some knowledge I wish I had before. But you know, it's never too late to gain knowledge for good.

The fluency and flow of style and viscosity of material, the narrative, is such that one can't afford the luxury of stopping or having a breathing space while going through it. Even at the chapter-ends, one is tempted to hurry on: the journey or reading is so enchanting and thrilling, unexpectedly, so to say!

This book did well to describe the origins, influences and achievements of both the leaders. It is very interesting to find out about the political context to previous events. Crisp narration, no repetition, full of facts and insight. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

Human beings can always find common ground if they try hard enough. Being on two sides of disagreeing continents does not necessitate an enmity. Barack Obama and Angela Merkel understood this. It did not start with an obvious affinity for each other. Angela Merkel was adamant to warm up to the incumbent president of the U.S. Barack Obama was desperate to repair the strained relationship between America and Europe as well as get the country through the recession. He had his work cut out for him. It took a while but they finally developed a relationship based on mutual respect and genuine friendship as well as a harmonious effort to serve their people. Author Claudia Clark does a fantastic job of bringing this all together in her illuminating book, Dear Barack.

This is basically a buddy story. Only it is not fiction and the main characters are two of the most powerful people in the world. It is an eye-opening story about the human capacity to overcome the urge to become enemies in the pursuit of the interests that suit their cause. It may have been a difficult time in more ways than one but these two leaders were guiding lights not just for the people in their countries but for the world. It also renews hope that good leaders do exist, especially after the administration that succeeded Obama’s. The story is especially interesting that both of them were outliers – Barack, the first black president, and Angela, a female leader in the free world.

Claudia Clark has narrated history in a way that is engaging and uplifting. You do not need to be a history fanatic to enjoy this book. The author conveys history in a way that is compelling and captivating. She pulls in the reader and puts them in the meetings and private conversations between the two. This is a well-researched account of the inspiring relationship between these two highly admired leaders. Her regard for both of them shines through her words and her tone.

The author even adds a little bit of Obama’s wit and charm to the story. Her narration is nothing short of gripping. It is the kind of book you discuss with your friends and family because there is so much intellectually invigorating content.

You cannot help but shed a tear when Angela does as she watched her friend and fellow leader leave office. You will definitely chuckle when you read about Obama’s sign-off to his friend. Dear Barack is a beautifully written book about a wonderful partnership.

DEAR BARACK
BY- CLAUDIA CLARK

BLURB
Today, we know US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel as two of the world's most influential leaders, together at the center of some of the biggest controversies and most impressive advancements of our time.
United by this conviction, they would forge a complicated but inspiring partnership.......

Thumbs up
❣️- I love how this book portrays the fact that two people who have different cultural background , have different political statements or mindset or two people who are entirely different from each other can end up being very good friends if they want to.
❤️- The book is well research because of the facr that the Author provide us with enough background studies and material to know about both of the political leaders.
❤️- The book is non fiction in nature and hence the cover and title is straightforward and apt to the plot because cover portrayed simplicity which is needed to the book.
❤️-The flow of the book is moderate and the narration is crisp and the whole book is full of facts and knowledge which keeps the readers hooked till the end.

BOOK REVIEW
BOOK - DEAR BARACK : THE EXTRAORDINARY PARTNERSHIP OF BARACK
AUTHOR - CLAUDIA CLARK

Though I'm a big fan of non fiction genre and love reading books on politics and geopolitics, somehow I was never inclined to read the books on Barack Obama and Angela Merkel. I have read about several politicians and other prominent figures. May be I am in a way expected more from these two considering the background they have come from.

Barack Obama being the first black president in the USA history and Angela Merkel - the first female chancellor of Germany. But as I started reading the book, my interest kept increasing. The author gave a brief history about the past of both Barack Obama and Angela Merkel. Their lives- the circumstances under which they came up impressed me. Though I was aware of Barack Obama to a certain extent, Angela Merkell was alien to me. But her life in the East Berlin under the Soviet union and her ascendancy to power is praise worthy.

Coming to the relationship between the two, as the title suggests, one can see how their relationship developed and formed into a strong bond over the years. Though they both stood at the longer heads on several issues, it didnt impact their friendship. The comfort with which both addressed each other on the first name basis is a testimony as to how far their relationship has come and stood the test of time.

The author also gave a brief about several political and geopolitical issues like NATO, Subprime crisis, or the Iran nuclear deal. The book was very informative and gave me insights which I seldom found in the academic books. The language is simple and the book is short and fast paced.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in geopolitics and international affairs or just want to be inspired by the lives of these great people.

Impressive Example of leadership, of modern friendship, respect and true commitment for unity instead of separation. It portrays the relationship between two great leaders that could put their personal interests and differences aside and work together in harmony for the greater good. Two leaders who proved that admiration, respect and friendship do not need to sacrifice individual views. Both Merkel and Obama will go down in history as reference of what unity, communication, transparency and empathy means in the world of politics. They will hopefully serve as examples for future leaders to emulate; all those in search of unity, peace and world collaboration. Great read !

I may be showing my political colors with this choice. Yes, I also eagerly devoured both of Barack Obama’s books. This one I enjoyed the both as I found it heart warming.

There aren’t a whole lot of funny moments in the book, but a couple anecdotes I particularly enjoyed.

I LOVE bios and I did enjoy this one. You just have to take it for what it is...an Autobiography written by someone with future political aspirations. I do feel that it was honest and I found it very interesting. Obama was doing amazing, selfless things at a very throughout his political career and I was very inspired!

Replete with melodramatic references straight out of a Danielle Steele or a Nicholas Sparks playbook, “Dear Barack” by author Claudia Clark, is a curious book. In attempting to unravel the secrets underpinning a phenomenal rapport enjoyed by two former leaders of their respective nations, President Barack Obama of the United States and Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, the book falls an unwitting prey to an unabashed bias nurtured by the author towards both politicians. As a consequence, the work ends up an unashamed paean that waxes lyrical at almost every page.

The book begins on a very enthusiastic note charting the humble beginnings of both Obama and Merkel. While Merkel spent a predominant part of her formative years under the unrelenting scrutiny of the East German Statsi, Obama grew up under the loving care and astute guidance of a mother who, despite facing the travails of life in the form of a single parent, was determined to ensure that her offspring got the best of education. However as Clark illustrates, the initial meeting between the two protagonists, began, putting it mildly, on a testy note. Visiting Germany as a Presidential candidate, Obama was denied an opportunity to address the German crowd at the famed Brandenburg Gate, a venue where former President John F. Kennedy delivered his immortal “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech at the heights of the Cold War. Merkel apparently remarked that the venue was reserved for talks to be delivered by ‘actual Presidents’. A chastised Obama in turn is said to have retorted that he never demanded that he be accorded a prospect to talk at the hallowed venue.

However as future events depicted, Obama not only got to address a teeming, pulsating crowd of Germans egging him on at the Brandenburg Gate, but also succeeded in establishing a friendship with Merkel, which he himself claimed to be the most cherished political relationship throughout his tenure as President of the United States. Setting aside various differences in opinions concerning key political issues such as the potential arming of Ukraine against the impudent annexation of Crimea by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Obama’s unflinching philosophy of bolstering the corrupt banks that caused the Financial Recession of 2007 or the reticence of Germany in supplying troops to Afghanistan, Obama and Merkel agreed to disagree. But still they managed to forge ahead in tandem, resolutely supporting each other in troubling times. The pinnacle of this relationship was attained when the normally reserved Merkel began addressing Obama as “Dear Barack” instead of the more formal “President of the United States”.

The transformation from “President” to “Dear Obama” is the nub of this book. Unfortunately it is its tedium too. Almost every formal visit made by the two leaders between Germany and The United States are referred to, and entire paragraphs from the talks given by the duo, paraphrased. In addition the key highlights of the speeches as captured by publications of note from both nations such as Der Spiegel and the New York Times are reproduced. To cap it all, the author liberally engages in hyperbole. “On more than one occasion when the camera zoomed in on the chancellor for her reaction to something the president had said, her eyes almost looked wet with tears. Similarly, several times she bit her lip and smiled awkwardly as she acknowledged the president’s remarks”.

The book however has its moments too. The remarkably adroit manner in which Merkel, with inputs received from Obama tackled the Crimea invasion by Putin, before the finalization of the Minsk II peace accord, makes for some interesting and introspective reading. Similarly, the elucidation on how the P5+1 Platform (USA, UK, France, China, Russia + Germany) was leveraged to force Iran to sign a landmark nuclear deal to prevent the autocratic regime from building a nuclear bomb is worth every word. Unfortunately, as the author illustrates, all the hard work and dedication expended by the P5+1 was brought to naught when Donald Trump after assuming power not only pulled USA out of the deal but also deemed it appropriate to impose additional sanctions on Iran.

Similarly the conscientious labour undertaken by a plethora of nations to commit themselves to control emissions so that the perils of climate change could be mitigated if not obviated, received a calamitous set back when an idiosyncratic Trump pulled America out of the Paris Climate accord citing climate change as a ‘manufactured hoax’.

“Dear Barack” could have been so much more riveting.

Claudia Clark's Dear Barack: The Extraordinary Partnership of Barack Obama and Angela Merkel is an uninspired attempt at tracing the friendship of these two global leaders, riddled with clichéd anecdotes and redundant historical facts. The author's efforts to position this relationship in the broader context of world politics remain overly simplistic and unconvincing.

From the outset, the book spends far too much time delving into the family backgrounds of Obama and Merkel, rather than focusing on their political journey and partnership. Clark paints these initial chapters with a broad brush, giving an overview of their early lives that feels detached from the main narrative. The details of their rise to power, including Merkel's ascendance as the first East German Chancellor and Obama's 'Audacity of Hope' speech, are presented with a lack of depth and analysis.

While the book purports to showcase a bond founded on shared beliefs and the uplifting power of democracy, the narrative seems to gloss over their ideological differences and policy clashes, presenting an overly sanitized version of their relationship. Particularly, the Great Recession's economic crisis, a significant turning point in their partnership, is dealt with superficially, focusing more on their differing styles at press conferences than their contrasting economic strategies.

Despite its title, Dear Barack falls short of delivering a compelling account of a global camaraderie. It reduces these formidable leaders' challenges and struggles to bland recitations of public knowledge. There is a glaring absence of any unique or insightful information that could have added depth to the book.

Finally, Clark's writing is filled with obvious conclusions and repetitive statements, making the book an underwhelming read. While it may have been presented as a historical narrative, the lack of rigorous research and in-depth analysis undermines its credibility.

Dear Barack provides a flat, uninspired account of the partnership between Barack Obama and Angela Merkel. For a truly insightful exploration of their relationship, readers may have to look elsewhere.
