I have love/somewhat-disgusted feelings about this book. (I would say "series of books," but I never finished the flagship book in the series.)
On the one hand, I find some common sense advice for the artist, certainly things I can relate to, such as today's (9/26) gem: "There is a connection between self-nurturing and self-respect. If I allow myself to be bullied and cowed by other people's urges for me to be more normal or more nice, then I sell myself out. They may like me better, feel more comfortable with my more conventional appearance or behavior, but I will hate myself. Hating myself, I may lash out at myself and others."
However, there is plenty of nonsense in this series, mostly having to do with the "Creator," who only wants what is best for us, if we just reach out and take what is offered.
Yeesh, no thanks. I'm good.
As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I just need to build up some self confidence and a healthy dose of reality from time to time, not forgetting of course, that it's always good for artists to enjoy childlike play and creativity to avoid writer's block and being creatively stiffed. I'm pretty sure that's good advice for anyone who takes themselves too seriously.
Anyway, I enjoy the bits that remind me that there are other artists struggling with blocks and with unhealthy (self-)criticism, I just wish there was something for those of us who don't want our artistic self-help tainted with weird culty spirituality.
And I'm not even sure how to search for that.

It’s hard for me to give this book an objective rating because it changed my life. It is a little hokey and written in a meandering, vague way, which frustrates the hell out of some friends I recommended it to. But it has weekly and daily exercises that help you do a slow steady crawl of self discovery in tiny baby steps. For me, the exercises helped me do rather than stay trapped in a prison of thinking. They helped me know with certainty what I really wanted for myself at the time and that clarity led to some major breakthroughs in my creative and personal life. I even started an Artist Way group, a move so out of character for me and that I’m still very proud of. This book isn’t for everyone but if you are one of the ones it is for it can be very helpful and healing. Set up like a workbook and there is crap ton of a particular way of journaling involved.

The Artists Way is one of my bibles. I read through completely & actively participated in every activity the first time June 2014. I've gone through it in varying levels of thoroughness every year since then. I recommend this book to everyone because it will speak to you wherever you are at.

I got recommended to this book by an artist friend as a book to help solve the artist block.
I am in the first 20% of the book and really struggle to continue reading it as I am really put off by the repeated notion of ‘god’ / ‘the Creator’. Why do you should believe you are creative? - Because god made you so. Because god is the most creative. I can imagine how it will appeal to some but not quite for me.
I like the idea of daily journal, and I did it, but the repeated miracle-like examples of daily journaling is a bit too much.

November 23, 2021Having just finished “The Artist’s Way” there was a lot of repetition. I didn’t read the description before downloading and was hoping it would be daily exercises, but it is small excerpts. Personally, found more value in the original, but I see how this format could work for some.

One star withheld not because of any lack of generosity on the author's part, but just my inability to follow through any one technique with full involvement. But it's always elevating and I'm sure I will revisit it again and again. Definitely deserves the cult classic status it has earned.

Ugh. I have not been so glad to finish a book in a long time. In defense of the book, I read it out of order. I should have read The Writer's Journey first. Because I hadn't, it required a bit of research to understand a couple of concepts (morning pages and artist's dates).
There were some nuggets that made reading this a worthy task, but I fear most of it was lost on me. To me, this would have been better suited as an affirmation page-a-day calendar than a book to be read. Maybe that was sort of how it was meant, but if you get it from the library and only get 2 weeks to read it, you read it more like a book. There were times that I thought, "great information, but how do you do that?". You can't ask a book questions and always get the answer I guess. All the God talk was a bit much for me as well. While I'm spiritual in nature, the name I use isn't "God". Not normally a big deal, I just sort of translate to my own tongue. That does get to be a chore after a while though.
I'm sure most people who read this will feel differently. Perhaps my appreciation will be better when I read The Wrier's Journey. For now, I can only offwer 3 stars.

Started reading this on the first of January. The idea was to read a page every day. That didn't last long. I just didn't find it all that enlightening. Most of the advice seemed to just encourage procrastination and the idea that the artist could never be wrong.
Then, after putting it off for about six months, I finished the entire thing in a few days before the end of the year. Either the advice synergized better in the second half, or I was just in a more accommodating mindset. So, in the end, enjoyable, but I can't really forgive it for my loss of interest when trying to read it the intended way.

A classic I revisit over and over again throughout the years. I had an opportunity to ask Billy Corgan about his prolific work and songwriting and he had mentioned this book had a lot to do with his ability to focus and create art. I look at it like this: there’s a right way and a wrong way to make bread. The artists way is one way to make bread. It’s not the right way and it’s not the wrong way it’s just *a* way. There’s a lot of talk of God and if you’re not particularly religious just replace God with the self and everything will make sense.

Excellent book for writers, artists or any creatives looking for support and inspiration on their journey of creation. I highly recommend this book!! It is one that will always be on my shelf, and I'll read it again and again. It is the type of book that each time you read it you can find a new treasure in its pages.

I took my time with this book, between writing and reading I found it helped me immensely. I know it isn't for everyone, but for the most part there were many gems to glean.
I enjoyed the format and the quotes and Julia's candor and honesty in her own personal daily struggles.

When I started to read this book I thought, "Oh no it's going to be too Godly." But it wasn't. It was spiritual, yes, but it was perfect. Not just for writers or artists per se, but for anybody pursuing anything in life. This book has it all.

Reading the reviews I can see a lot, if not most, think they are reviewing The Artist's Way. This is not that book. The cover art is the same and it looks nearly identical, but do not pick this up thinking that you are getting that exceptional and critically valuable book. This is 365 excerpts from Julia Cameron's books all jumbled up into a year's worth of daily readings. DO NOT START WITH THIS BOOK. It will not make sense and may even put you off reading The Artist's Way, which is seminal in influencing artists moving through artist blocks into success.
I do not like giving Julia Cameron a low review. It does not feel right. She has saved my artist life by writing The Artist's Way. But I do want to honestly say that this particular book is just not for me. I had high hopes thinking this is going to be something like Simple Abundance in that there is a daily reading, but as a J type personality this was far too chaotic. I feel as if each month could have had a theme, but it was just all over the place while at the same time was primarily about writing (and I am guessing she is referring to the morning pages most of the time, though sometimes I think she is talking about writing writing) and God. Out of context the readings are heavy handed and preachy (a LOT of mention of God) and I felt like some days I was being berated.
There are some real gems in here, but overall I kind of felt bad about myself while reading this. The Artist's Way in context doesn't make me feel that way at all and I HIGHLY recommend that. I may actually read this again to see if I am more receptive to it in the future and if not just star the pages that I find are especially good so I can avoid the ones that make me feel bad. Or maybe I'll just go read her other books to get the information in context.
I do not like giving Julia Cameron a low review. It does not feel right. She has saved my artist life by writing The Artist's Way. But I do want to honestly say that this particular book is just not for me. I had high hopes thinking this is going to be something like Simple Abundance in that there is a daily reading, but as a J type personality this was far too chaotic. I accidentally picked this book up instead of The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron’s prequel to this one. On page 2 I realized my mistake but decided to push through to see exactly what it’s about, and if The Artist’s Way is worth picking up afterwards.
My main takeaway from this is that there is some solid advice in there, although she takes great care to repeat it over, over, and over again (which has its own merit and works a charm, although it can get a little annoying. no need to quote the same exact words 4 separate times).
This book’s downfall is the heavy reliance on this idea that God, or the Great Creator, is the end all be all. I am not a religious person in the slightest and did power through this regardless, though it tainted my reading. There’s just so much of it it’s impossible to ignore. Also woven in the book is this idea that mental illness (also therapy) is not… real? And that it’s just a symptom of your inner artist hurting. It took me by surprise a little.
The repeated use of the word “husband” as a verb to describe taking great care of something scratches the surface of what, to me, seems like the author’s deep rooted misogynistic beliefs. But what do I know!
