This is great representation of what it is like to grow as an asexual person (or one of the many other sexualities that people pretend do not exist just because they do not understand them). Lizzie’s experience mirrors so much mine and others that I have talked to. Her struggle to understand who she is and to be accepted is so real. The lack of representation and the struggle that results from that is an unfortunate experience that many people face (I didn’t even know about asexuality in people until high school). I appreciate that Lizzie gets such a mixed responses from people and learns how to deal with that. I also appreciate the fact that Lizzie also had a boy who bullied her and people just brushed off because they thought he liked her. Allowing that kind of behavior is unacceptable and it is what leads to men thinking that it okay to do a lot worse. Instead of boys will be boys, we need to start saying that boys will be held accountable for their actions. ...more

This different enough for those that have watched Kiki's Delivery Service to not get bored, but the general sentiment is the same. This will definitely scratch that nostalgic itch. For those who have not watched the movie (please watch it), this novel is a great middle grade read about a little witch learning to become independent and finding great friends along the way. This has some great cottagecore vibes and is interesting without being fast-paced or heart pounding. This is great for those that want a slightly slower paced novel that is relatively light hearted. ...more

I also really loved how the main characters did not try to change themselves, but learned to love themselves. The author also points out that it is not just the kids that need to love themselves. Parents need to love their kids, regardless of what they look like. Parents do not need change their children and often times the things they are trying to change in their children is something the parent really needs to workout in therapy. Parents also need to learn to actually listen to their kids....more

You would think that these two themes would clash, but the author expertly merges the two. For a kids book, this was pretty spooky. I also love the complex characters and how some of the characters get story arcs (not always something seen in spooky books). This short book is perfect for Halloween....more

I found it interesting that it was told from both the pint of view of the dog and the point of view of the boy. I think the book did try to pack too much. There was a bit about racism, sibling loss, and other bits that were tough topics and kind of felt like they were just thrown in there. I think the book could have dived deeper into those topics (it was only 150 pages, so there was room to add more to the story). Still a fun paranormal read though....more

Well, Noah writes to Mothman (though Noah isn’t sure Mothman is real) to do a science experiment to understand if Mothman is real or not. Along the way, Noah befriends a group of kids. Told from a series of letters and first person narration, this beautifully poignant and heartbreaking novel discusses grief, queerness, neurodivergence, friendship, and learning to let people see the real you.
I fully support Noah’s idea that Mothman is queer. Noah makes a really interesting case and I think there was a reason that queer and neurodivergent people tend to like cryptids (speaking as a queer who likes cryptids). I also really love to see Noah’s relationship with Mothman change and his relationships with his friends and family change. I really love how the author actually wrote the novel (in a novel in verse and the way the poems change which side of the page they are depending on the person). This is truly a great novel....more
