Usually I don’t feel *incredibly* connected to the characters (especially when the book is short) because I don’t feel the stakes are high enough, they can air on the side of too cheesy without executing it properly, or they don’t pack enough of a punch for me to feel really emotionally drawn to them. A lot of the time, they can feel very “rinse and repeat” without adding many notable elements to the story that I haven’t seen in similar books before.
But this one????? This one TOOK ME BY SURPRISE. I am actually appalled at myself for never having read any of Tarah’s work before this. I went into it a bit apprehensive because it was the first ever book I’ve read that an author has gone out of their way to send to me, and I also decided to read it between two incredibly heavy, 500+ page books. How could this measly little small town romance about a chef and a hobby-farming teacher ever compare???? but UGH. it was beautiful.
The little town of Spunes, Oregon gave me heavy Stars Hollow vibes (that’s a Gilmore Girls reference for any of you uncultured mf’s out there) in the best possible way. If it was located in the Pacific Northwest, of course. Sage and Fisher were such beautifully written characters on their own and together. This story filled so many gaps that romcoms I’ve recently read have failed to fill for me.
It was incredibly cheesy and wholesome without making me cringe or roll my eyes, BEAUTIFULLY written, spicyyyyyy without edging into the territory of too vulgar for a funny small town romance book, and touched on heavy topics without dragging down the overall lighthearted, summery vibe of the story.
I was giggling & kicking my feet the entire time, and very quickly discovered that I could not put this book down if I tried. My nervousness around reading an author-gifted book was severely misplaced because I could not fathom giving this less than 5 stars. I recommend this to absolutely everyone!!!!!! Now for Harriet and Wyn… would every single problem of theirs be fixed if either of them had gone to therapy once in their first 30 years of life?? Probably lmao. I despise the miscommunication trope just as much as the next person, but I actually felt like this time it was done as well as it can be!! She did a great job of realistically capturing how anxiety and depression crippled their relationship no matter how much they loved each other and how much chemistry they had.
