I know this has nothing to do with this book (for those reading in the future who don't care and/or don't know about my personal sentiments and past year-long 2023 reading slump), but I had only one non-smut 5-star read in 2023 (and I only had one of those for perspective), so the fact that I loved this book so early in the year is VERY exciting for me.
That said...
I love books about family drama and the effects of generational habits (some might say "trauma" but I would argue that that's just LIFE), and this book delivered on that front in so many ways. The manner in which this book presented the nuances of parental expectations, familial canons, and relational compromises was so amazing. I just loved it.
And that can all be attributed to the fantastic level of showing versus telling. Just some outstanding storytelling here, folks, that's all I can say. Some character-driven awesomeness all around.

This has been my reading experience with almost all the books in both these series:
I'll read the book once and rate it about three stars. I'll feel a hankering for some alpha-holes and mafia and think of this book again. I'll read it again and decide it's worthy of an upgrade to four stars. Time will pass and I will re-read it again during another mafia hankering. Repeat. Repeat. Then fuck it, I'll say. Five stars.

Needless to say, being that this is a retelling of the events of book one (which I have read and re-read so many times it would be embarrassing if I was prone to embarrassment) from Luca's POV, I was pretty sure I would like it. But retellings also always come with the risk of completely ruining the original story, which I why I put off reading this for so long and then actually forgot about it completely.
But I digress.
I adored every minute of this thing. It was like re-reading a favorite for the first time again, but better.

But, thankfully, you can always count on Pam Godwin to bring the goods.
Her ability to take inherently evil characters, actions, and situations and make them fictionally redeemable is magical. Hell, half the time, the "villains" from previous come back as the heroes of future books.
Such was the case here with Tiago.
And I loved him.
His magnetism had me locked and loaded from the onset and the chemistry shared between him and Kate was page-scorching. I even liked Kate. It's hard to write the "strong" victim over and over again and have them not become interchangeable cardboard cutouts; but, as usual, Godwin manages to circumvent that pitfall like a champ.
I also really liked how she overlaid this story's narrative with that of the previous book in a way that didn't feel duplicative.
And, of course, I can't fucking WAIT for book nine. Because COLE.
If you don't like certain trigger content, i.e., captivity, rape, and physical and mental abuse, this probably isn't the book or series for you. Other than that, I can't recommend this book highly enough to dark romance fans, although I do recommend you read them in order.

And when I saw that the love interest in THIS book was Tate - a character who spent all of the LAST book obsessed and pining over the LAST book's heroine?
I became...concerned.
But like I said, PG is a boss and made it work and then some here.
The mystery of Lucia and her whereabouts and motivations kept me interested... Tate was all smexy and hot AF and all that...
But what kept me glued to the page?

He and Amber (whom I adore) are one of my top couples ever. They are beyond fucked up and damaged and riddled with legit mental illness and I would gorge on them for all eternity if I could.
So getting some extra doses of them in this book was a total win for me.
I also ADORED Van and Tate's relationship dynamic and interactions throughout this book.
Another HUGE win for me?
Another AMAZING and completely unexpected appearance of a beloved character from Pam's Tangled Lies series.
I won't specifically name that character as to do so runs the potential of completely wrecking THAT series for folks who haven't read it yet...but folks who HAVE can probably guess who that character is....
It was amazing and awesome and all the adjectives under the sun that equate to SUPER. Fucking. Swell.

This CAN be read as a standalone, I suppose...HOWEVER(!!!) In my opinion, I think that to enjoy this book to the fullest, you MUST read books 1-3 first.
And, if possible, you should try to read Pam's Tangled Lies series before reading book four of THIS series.
Failure to do so will absolutely WRECK that series for you - and it's SUCH an amazing series and I HIGHLY recommend it.
So, yeah, that's a lot of reading (six books total) that I feel need to be read prior to this in order to FULLY enjoy this book; but you know what?
I loved and devoured them ALL.
So, if your wallet can take it or your library supply it, I can't recommend these book highly enough.
Just to note: Book one of this series is actually my least favorite of the series; but books 2-4 were all 4.5/5 stars for me, I believe.

In the end, I adored all the unnecessary scenes. Because, yes, while they weren't really intrinsic as far as plot and character-building went, I loved spending more time with these characters and getting more moments and angles with them.
I adored all the superfluous dialogue. Because, yes, while some of it had NO point whatsoever and did nothing to move the story forward, again: I loved spending more time with these characters.
Plus, witty.
Also, just as in the first book, this one dealt with hard-hitting topics in a way that didn't feel false or over-dramatized. Were some of the events VERY dramatic? Absolutely. But they never felt contrived.
As I have already said, I loved all the characters, especially Johnny and Shannon's friend group. Especially Johnny (of course). The slow build of his and Shannon's relationship (while sometimes frustrating for someone used to reading a LOT of fast-moving smut romance) was SO worth it in the end. Blue balls and all.

I'm just going to lay something down here because I don't want to forget my thoughts and I just haven't felt compelled to write the review I really wanted. So I'll do my best with what I have in the moment.
This book was ROUGH.
It's grief and pain stacked upon grief and pain.
And yet, this was also one of the easiest and most digestible reads of the year for me, which is a huge credit to the author's skill.
The writing was awesome and I enjoyed it immensely.
The author did a great job of showing and not telling and flawlessly captured the volatile world of grief without making the reader feel buried by it. Anyone who has experienced true grief can tell you that it's fucking messy and completely without rationality. And Eve exemplified this magnificently.
The star of this book for me, however, was Eve's family. I want to be born into that family in my next life. They were magnificent. Supportive and loving and everything a person could dream of without it feeling false and trite.
Anyway, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

I am a huge Anna Zaires fan and will read anything she writes; however, after not really loving this book's precursor series (my review for book one in that duet can be found HERE) I wasn't sure how this one was going to pan out for me.
But, holy cow, this was everything I wanted it to be and everything I love about Anna Zaires' brand of romance... a ruthless alpha male lead who was completely and unhealthily obsessed with the heroine. With no effort made to soften his edges or excuse his lack of morals.
Delicious.
This was written differently from any AZ book I've ever read, as it was entirely composed of constant flashbacks from past to present....
Normally? I loathe this. Seriously though, I hate it. But this time? It totally worked for me.
Perhaps it was because each cutaway was quick and dirty and then brought us right to the present... I'm not sure exactly. All I know was that it totally worked for me and I was into it 100%.
Also, the chemistry between these two was insane and I LOVED it. I cannot wait for book two to come out.

Indeed. Why do we?
Before this book came out, my knowledge of Jennette McCurdy only extended to random gifs featuring her iCarly character, Sam Puckett. I didn't actually know who she was and what they were from, I just knew they were funny and fit my "book review" purposes.
Here's an example:

When this book dropped, however, I was drawn to the title, the gloriously vintage macabre book cover, and the fact that it was getting rave reviews.
I was excited to read this and loved the cover so much that I purchased the hardcover drop instead of waiting for my library hold. I initially started this in early September, but for personal reasons I won't get into, I had to set it down for a bit. I have almost no triggers and can read pretty much anything without being all that affected, but - again - for personal reasons I won't get into, I found the details of Jennette's mother's behavior, narcissism, and emotional manipulation to be extremely triggering. And don't even get me started on the eating disorder triggers. I was also amidst a fairly stressful period in my work life, so I decided to wait until that was over before picking this back up.
Fast forward a little over a month and my library audiobook hold was by then available, so I decided to jump back in with that format. Let me just say that I can't recommend the audiobook version of this highly enough. It is obviously read by Jennette McCurdy herself and I think she does a great job of it.
I think the dichotomies of Jennette's life and story are very interesting and well explained. She is able to get across very nuanced and contradictory sentiments without sounding like a complete whiner. And that's a really hard thing to accomplish in practice.
For example, she is able to outline how, despite understanding how privileged and "lucky" she was to be famous and on TV, she loathed acting, a lot of the fans, and the experiences that came with it all. ^See how assholey that's sounds just me saying it? Well, she nails it in the book, I promise you.
I also felt very connected to Jennette and had a lot of empathy for her. I grew up in LA County and am VERY familiar with almost every location she references in the LA/Orange County area. I literally drive by the Westminster Mall (which she references being that she grew up in Garden Grove, and which is basically a nonexistent ghost mall now) every day on the freeway on my way to work.
Also, I know I said I didn't want to get too woo-woo personal, but I will just say this: I deeply connected to Jennette in terms of understanding the longstanding effects (as a child who doesn't know any better) of being made to feel like you are responsible for the state of mind and emotions of another person - an ADULT person. For years.
It steals your childhood, stunts you emotionally, and really takes a long time to work through.
Some people should just NOT have children, folks. It's just that simple. I mean, what they say really is true: a lot of people spend their adulthood just trying to get over their childhoods. And that's even true for "GOOD" parents.
But I digress.
I liked how self-aware Jennette is. Or, at least, how self-aware she appeared to be in this book. That said, I also feel like this memoir came a little soon in terms of Jennette's recovery. She's very, very new to being on "the other side" of things. Although perhaps this book is a part of that, and so I can't fault her for that. And who am I to judge or criticize.
Overall, this book was a great account of a very unique human experience. I will definitely check out any future books or content Jennette puts out in the future. And I'm rooting for her, her recovery, and her happiness....more

This was one of those books where, when someone asks you what the book you are reading is about, you are kind of at a loss for words. Because, as the blurb stated, this was essentially a book about two good friends making a video game together.
But was it?
Not gonna lie, I wasn't sure where I would land on this when I decided to pick up late via BOTM add-on. (See, I even skipped over it when it was one of the monthly picks).
Despite being a child of the 80's and 90's, I never played videogames. I know, I know...the horror, some of you might be thinking. But, whelp, my dad was adamantly against us playing them, convinced it would make us lazy and turn our minds into mush.
Well, while I can't say that I'm not lazy or that my mind isn't mush despite never being a gamer, I can say that, based on the one or two times I played it at a friends' house, I really sucked at Mario Kart anyway.
But I digress.
Like I said, never having been a gamer, I was worried about how that might play into my enjoyment of a book which, on the surface, was centered around video games.
But again...was it really?
Yes and no.
This was about so much more than video games, folks. So much more than standard friendship. I can't even explain what I mean here...It just encapsulated so much of the human experience in such a bold, yet nuanced way.
In today's western culture--which is seemingly insistent upon everything having to be a social justice/political statement that slams you over the head on exhausting repeat--the way this book handled said topics felt...organic.
Showing not telling. Allowing me to absorb the message instead of simply beating me over the head with self-righteousness. So refreshing.
Also, there are so many elements of the book that felt personal to me...that struck a chord with me. I won't get into them; but, suffice to say that, again, this book was very much about the human experience. And the way the author used video games as a platform for it all was super creative. And super well executed, in my opinion.
Originally, I rated this 4.5 instead of 5 stars; however, I've thought about this book a lot since finishing it several days ago. And anything that makes me self-reflect...that moves me enough to contemplate the facets of it days later...deserves the full five.

I am still fairly new to the thriller/mystery/suspense genre and, despite being a lifelong power reader, have only been reading it the last few years...so I'm not sure if that means I'm still easily impressed at this point or what, but...I was very impressed by this book and the way Ellis laid this thing out.
There were so many moving parts and I thought it was brilliant how everything came together in the end. And I ALWAYS love a good revenge story. I don't want to say too much so as not to spoil any plot points, so I'll stop there. But I really enjoyed this and will definitely check out more from this author in the future.
