I have a weakness for retellings. I really enjoyed Melanie Dickerson’s previous fairytale series, Hagenheim. Court of Swans by Melanie Dickerson is the first book in the Dericott Tales and is a retelling of the Wild Swans fairytale. Delia is the daughter of an earl who dies and leaves her in the mercy of her wicked stepmother. However, when all her brothers are arrested for treason, she must find a way to save them. The new king is only fourteen years old and is counseled by those who have their own selfish interests at heart. With the help of a knight named Sir Geoffrey, they will need to find evidence to save her brothers from execution.
My favorites of Melanie Dickerson’s has to be The Healer’s Apprentice, The Merchant’s Daughter, and The Captive Maiden. In each of these tales, the characters capture the reader’s attention and have something more to give to the story. Delia…is completely bland. She does nothing except question why these bad things happen to her family. I actually enjoyed all the other characters. I can’t wait to see what happens to the eldest brother, Edwin. I hope he will get his own story!
The pacing did leave something to be desired. The brothers are imprisoned most of the book and not much really happens with the investigation until over halfway through the book. Although, the historical detail is phenomenal. Having been to London, I believe Melanie Dickerson captured London of the 1300s quite perfectly!
While this book did quite capture me, I have high hopes for the second novel in this series! I rate it 3 out of 5 stars!...more

During this Christmas season, I wanted to read about a holiday celebration that I do not celebrate but want to learn more about, so I found A Mistletoe Affair by Farrah Rochon! Janelle, Sandra, and Vicki are best friends who are building an event business together. Vicki is an extremely talented florist. As they are getting ready for Kwanzaa celebrations, Vicki is informed that she gets to design her own float for the local parade. Her family is less than supportive, but there is one person that she didn’t expect to be there for her…Jordan Woolcott. She has had a crush on him since she was fifteen. Now he is a single father to a toddler and quite the workaholic–he is in the midst of a political scandal. They don’t realize how much that they both need love and support in their lives…and the holiday season is just the season to bring them together!
This is probably my favorite holiday book this season! While the Kwanzaa celebrations were not the highlight of the book, I did love learning a little more about it. But the LOVE! This love story is just heartwarming. I love seeing Black love and joy shine so brightly! The characters are diverse, hilarious, loving, and successful. I love the friendship between Janelle, Vicki, and Sandra. They are there for each other through the thick and thin, even when their families are battling each other politically. Vicki and Jordan are the perfect match. I love how the author balances Jordan’s priorities. His son is first and foremost and also acknowledges that love is important for him as well. Vicki never questions Jordan’s priorities. She is there to support him and his son.
I loved watching these relationships blossom and I definitely intend to read the rest of the series! I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!...more

I was intrigued by the synopsis of this book– holiday festivities and a counterfeit scheme? Sounds like fun! It is 1817, A lady’s maid, Kate, and valet, Matt are devoted servants working hard during the holiday preparations at Shackleford Park estate. They are both so busy but romance doesn’t care about busy. However, when a footman goes missing, they are both drawn into a dangerous counterfeiting scheme!
Sigh… I loved the synopsis. But I didn’t care for the characters. This book tried to be a Jane Austen novel meets Downton Abbey. For young teens, I see this being a fun read. But the flirting. SO. MUCH. FLIRTING. I can’t tell you how many times it is mentioned!! And here is the kicker…THEY WEREN’T GOOD AT IT! Most flirtatious moments were cringeworthy. However, there were some moments that were awkward but they definitely made me laugh. Yes, I was laughing at the characters. I am horrible.
The pace is staggering. Despite it being a short book, the beginning moved pretty slow. The “suspenseful” parts weren’t all that suspenseful for me. But like I said, I just don’t think it was a good fit for me…maybe if I were fifteen, it would be perfect! I would also suggest listening to the audiobook version because Fiona Hardingham does a splendid job at all the different accents! I rate this audiobook 3 out of 5 stars!...more

This collection has some unforgettable characters and also a little more on the spicy side! A few of my favorite stories are Loving Her Highland Enemy, Brenna’s Yuletide Song, Highlander’s Christmas, and The Laird’s Midnight Dancer. Loving Her Highland Enemy starts with devastation as many are burned in a fire. The only surviving girl is adopted by the Laird to impersonate his daughter who pased away. This arrangement works best for their plans of revenge on the clan who destroyed their lives. The action and suspense will keep anyone on their toes! I felt like I read this story in less than an hour because I was hooked from the very first page. Brenna’s Yuletide Song is more of a lighthearted story that made me chuckle more than once. Brenna is the daughter of a French lord who is betrothed to a Highland Laird’s son. They could not be more opposite, but her voice will bring them together and even out of some awkward situations. Highlander’s Christmas is all about betrayal, survival, and forgiveness. I may have shed a tear or two at the end. Then finally The Laird’s Midnight Dancer brings a little magic to the collection. I love how this story focuses on how healing is not linear after a trauma.
If you love historical romance set in the Highlands then this collection is for you! There seemed to be a lot of similar names in each story which can be a little confusing but in all this collection is enchanting! I rate this 5 out of 5 stars....more

THE WINTER PEOPLE Well, I just finished reading The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon. I normally give myself some time to stew over my thoughts before writing my reviews. The problem is I won’t be sleeping anytime soon, so I might as well write the review. Ruthie lives in the small town of West Hall, Vermont. She wants to get out but her parents insist she sticks around until they can afford college. One night, Ruthie comes home after curfew and expects to be grounded forever, but her mother is nowhere to be found. While she and her sister, Fawn look for clues as to where she went they stumble on some wallets, a gun, and a book. The book is the diary entries of Sara Harrison Shea, who lived in their home 100 years ago. She is something of a local legend. She claims to have the secrets to bring the dead back and that her daughter Gertie was brought back to life. Ruthie discovers that she and Sara are connected in ways she could never imagine.
I have had this book sitting on my shelf for a few months now and I LOVED Jennifer McMahon’s The Invited and The Drowning Kind, so I was very eager to pick up this book. I was not disappointed. In fact, I can’t sleep right now. I am sitting here writing this review while watching The Golden Girls to help me to go to sleep! Jennifer McMahon is just a master at creating eerie aesthetics. Her stories are intricate and just downright terrifying at times. The one scene when one of the characters is looking at pictures of a cave from her husband’s camera and sees a little girl peeking out from the cave made me freak out. My dog is very concerned about me now.
One of the great things about her books is that the pacing is top-notch. The pacing is fantastic. It didn’t feel too gradual or slow. I hit page 25 and I didn’t put it down once after that. I needed to solve the mystery and I also really adored the characters. Ruthie and Fawn have such a wonderful sisterly relationship and take care of each other. But I do need to know more about Fawn. She seemed more in touch with the spirit world than Ruthie did. I was wondering if her doll was connected in some way. Sara’s point-of-view is disturbing but I couldn’t look away.
There are some trigger warnings: brutal murder scenes, miscarriage, child loss
There are multiple points-of-view that switches between two time periods. I can be very particular when books are in this format but I thought it was cohesive and connected the whole story perfectly. If you are looking for a creepy winter thriller, look no further! This book gets 5 out of 5 stars....more

Dash Sutherland is also trying to buy an airplane ticket to get to an important job interview, but the best they can offer him is standby. Both Ashley and Dash end up at the rental car area and there is only one car left. There is only one option, for them to share the car. After much negotiation, they are on their way. Meanwhile, the FBI arrives at the airport determined to find Ashley Davidson. She is on the no-fly list for terrorism and she has managed to escape them time and again. But now that she has either a hostage or an accomplice, she will be much easier to track, but what they can’t figure out is why she would use her real name and not an alias?
This is a delightful Christmas romantic comedy! I just found out it is also a Hallmark movie, so I need to check it out. It is cheesy and unbelievable like most Hallmark stories but the characters are amazing! Dash is ex-military, Ashley is a grad student, and both completely stubborn. Their road trip does not go as expected especially with a little tag-along! Dogs always make a story better. I have to say, I laughed out loud more than once. I had to pause the audiobook during the karaoke scene because I could not stop laughing. Debbie Macomber has a way of really setting a scene!
Now the FBI part is where the cheesy part comes in. So many rights were broken, but it also led to many chuckles and gave the story a little extra zing! Allyson Ryan is the narrator and she does a wonderful job and bringing each personality to life! I rate this quick, holiday read 4 out of 5 stars....more

THE WELL OF ASCENSION The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson is the 2nd book in the Mistborn Trilogy. This audiobook is narrated by the incredibly talented Michael Kramer who somehow manages to have a distinct voice for every single character. Now here comes the impossible task of trying to avoid spoilers. So tread carefully, I may accidentally let one or five slip. For those who don’t follow my Instagram, you do not know of the incredible event that took place surrounding this book. I borrowed this audiobook from Libby, but with the holidays, I fell behind on my 2 hours daily listening schedule. So on the day the book was due back, I still had 18 hours left to listen. Thank god, I could increase the listening speed, but I was victorious. I had finished at least 40% of this book in one day. Was this good for processing my emotions?…absolutely not! But I did it and you guys will suffer the consequences.

THE WELL OF ASCENSION OK. SPOILER!!! The Lord Ruler has fallen and the Kelsier crew now is now there to pick up the pieces. Vin is becoming more powerful than anyone could ever imagine and now Elend is now king! Then low and behold, three armies pop up and lay siege to the city. One of the leaders is none other than Elend’s father, who has his own Mistborn—Elend’s half-brother Zane. Zane thinks himself insane but is determined to win Vin to his side. There is so much political upheaval surrounding the armies. Vin needs to find the Well of Ascension but how?
And that is all I can do with the basic synopsis. The more I try to add, the more I end up having to erase because I go off on tangents.
Be prepared for ALL THE BETRAYAL. You think you know, but you know nothing. I SOBBED. Because it was as if a knife stabbed me in the back. My favorite character as always is Sazed but another favorite rises. Oreseur, a Kandra who now needs to fulfill his contract with Vin. He is not there because he wants to be, but because it is his assignment. Kandra can take the bones of another, and impersonate them–which is essentially a shapeshifter but eerier. HOW DARE BRANDON SANDERSON! He led me on. I got attached! I broke my own rule and got attached and he smashed my heart because of it.
This book is not like the first. The pacing moves along smoothly now that everything has been introduced in the first book. This audiobook is 28 hours long but I enjoyed every second. I now have to wait 4 more weeks before I can borrow book three. This installment gets all the stars. 5 out of 5! Remember what I said, you think you know, but you don’t—and I know I am eating my own words because I can’t fathom what is in store next....more

THE LAIRD’S YULEBRINGER O Night Divine is a holiday anthology written by 21 authors. All the stories take you back in time to the Scottish Highlands, the Regency Period, the Victorian period, and even the Elizabethan period. All of the stories channel Charles Dickens with helpful ghosts and love. and they really bring the Christmas spirit with these tales.
One thing about this collection is that it has 21 stories and each story is roughly 50 pages. In previous anthologies that I have read, there are usually 8-10 stories and range 150-200 pages each. Needless to say, these stories move extremely quickly! Some of them left me a little disappointed because I wanted more. All of the authors created some amazing characters and stories but 50 pages just aren’t enough.
However, I did have quite a few favorites!
1) The Laird’s Yulebringer by Caroline Lee takes place in the Scottish Highlands and Callan is mourning his wife who died a year before. He has a young son and everyone around him is pushing him to move on but he just can’t. That is until a spirit comes to him and shows him his future with another woman and a child. He believes it was all just a dream until he sees the woman and child in the forest.
2) Never Keep a Secret at Christmas by Maggi Anderson introduces a grumpy old man named Lord Hawkinge. He has no family that he talks to and keeps to himself. That is until a spunky young woman climbs their neighboring wall. Alice knows that he is only grumpy because he is lonely. So she writes to his heir and grandson. He comes immediately, dreading to see his grandfather, and is completely captivated by Alice.
3) Her Star from the East by Mary Lancaster is such a touching love story. It is Christmas and Emma is not happy. She misses Selim, her Prince from the Ottoman Empire. He is a good friend of her brother and she has been in love with him since she met him. One night she sees a star and she wonders if she follows it just like the wise men did, that it would lead her to him. Then Selim appears…
4) How to Get an Earl for Christmas by Violetta Rand introduces Rose and her brother Timothy. They have been cast out of their home by their half brother. They soon discover that they have a godmother who is to help them with their mother’s last wishes and that includes a betrothal for Rose.
5) The Heart is Never Silent by Aubrey Wynne is probably my favorite out of all of them. Henrietta and Horatia (Etta and Tia) have to flee their current situation. The man that is supposed to be Tia’s guardian, plans to marry Etta and send Tia to an insane asylum since she is deaf. They come across Dr. Wharren who feels called to help them, but can’t deny his attraction to Etta.
All of these tales have beautiful love stories but my favorite part is all the little references to Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. There is so much charm and love that is perfect for the holiday season! Overall, I rate this collection 4 out of 5 stars!...more

NORTH AND SOUTH North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell is one of my all-time favorite classics. North and South was originally a serial story that appeared in Charles Dickens’ magazine. Margaret Hale’s life is completely uprooted when her father decides that it is best to leave the Church. They live in the south where everything seems idyllic to Margaret. Now, they move north to Milton. Milton is a factory town and the complete opposite of what Margaret is used to. She has never seen poverty and struggle in this way before. She meets a few locals and sees how they struggle in poverty, work conditions, and illness. Even though she is not wealthy herself, she recognizes her privilege and develops of sense of social justice. This determination grows even more heated when she runs in with a mill-owner named John Thornton. Both are set in their ways and polar opposites, especially when it comes to how the employees are treated, but something wonderful happens when they are both willing to open their minds and their hearts…
It really makes so much sense that this story appeared in Dicken’s magazine. Her discussions of work conditions and poverty and very common themes within Dicken’s works as well. To me, this book is the perfect read during Christmas or Winter, just like Little Women or A Christmas Carol. There is something about evaluating oneself at Christmas time. Seeing the world and its hardships can be depressing but we can also do something about it.
The characters are timeless. Margaret Hale is a wonderful female protagonist with fierce wit, compassion, and refuses to let the fact that she is a woman stand in the way. John Thornton is up there with Captain Wentworth or Colonel Brandon for me. Determined, hard-working, and so passionate—but it is BOTH of their character development is perfect. Then there is Mr. Hale, Margaret’s father. He is a gentle soul. Our first view of him, is him leaving the Church and this just shows the content of his character right off the bat. He refuses to be a hypocrite. Stepping away and evaluating his feelings and beliefs is commendable. And finally, there is Mrs. Thornton, John Thornton’s mother. Would I ever want to be in the same room as her? No. She is terrifying but at the same time, I absolutely adore her. Her love for her son is something I can feel in the deepest parts of my soul.
I have to admit, I cried a lot during this book. There is so much death and suffering. But the resolve pulls at your heartstrings. I love, love, love this book. It gets 5 out of 5 stars!...more
Oh boy! Buckle up, because this book is a TRIP! Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah is a very…unusual Christmas story. Joy has been divorced for 3 months Oh boy! Buckle up, because this book is a TRIP! Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah is a very…unusual Christmas story. Joy has been divorced for 3 months and is still grieving. The tough part is that she lost her sister as well as her husband. No, she didn’t die. Her sister slept with her husband. And now she is pregnant and inviting Joy to the wedding. YEP. YOU HEARD ME RIGHT. But let’s continue on. Joy makes an impulse decision to jump on an airplane and go anywhere. Well, not the greatest decision because the plane crashes. YEP. She and a few passengers get out but then the plane explodes which sends her running into the forest. She arrives at a cabin that is owned by a man named Daniel and his son, Bobby. Daniel and Bobby’s mother have been divorced for a while but after her death, Daniel has to be a single parent. The three of them sharing in the magic of Christmas brings about healing for all of them.
So there is a lot to unpack here. Yes, Joy’s sister sleeps with Joy’s husband, gets pregnant, and invites Joy to their wedding. WHAT WAS SHE THINKING?? Who in their right mind would even consider accepting this invitation. I know Christmas is all about forgiveness but this is just ridiculous!! I would have slapped her sister clear across the face, but that is just me I guess–but forgiveness would definitely not be on the menu. Now, let’s tackle this plane scene. The plane crashes. Not like a bumpy landing but actually crashes, and even blows up after she gets out of the plane. And what does Joy do? She doesn’t want to be “rescued” so she just WALKS away. She is bleeding and has one shoe and treks through the forest. Lady, just take the damn ambulance. Now, I know those of you who have read the book will argue “but it makes sense later on!” Just…no. It doesn’t make sense. It is just bad. It wasn’t suspenseful, just a massive eye-roll fest.
Don’t get me wrong. Not everything is horrible. Bobby is precious and I can see why Joy becomes friends with him so quickly. (Yes, Joy has some boundary issues.) But he is precious and I do love how he and his father get reacquainted. So I can see the affair happening. I can see the random trip happening and even befriending a family caught in the midst of grief. But the plane crash really just killed the whole story for me. I couldn’t take anyone or anything seriously. So overall, this book gets 2 stars....more

It is wonderful to go to Ivyhill! An Ivy Hill Christmas by Julie Klassen readers are reunited with the community of Ivyhill, Jane, Mercy, and Rachel to name a few. This installment introduces Richard Brockwell who distances himself from his family. He stays in London, working on his novel, but finances send him home for the Christmas season. He doesn’t have fond memories of his family home and this time his mother and her friend are determined to set him up with Arabella Awdry. Arabella has zero intentions of getting married, especially to a man like Richard. There are rumors that surround him and why does he always talking to the nursemaid? However, Christmas has a way of miracles and sparking love in the most unusual places.
If you haven’t read any of the other books in the Ivyhill series, I would highly suggest reading those before picking up this charming Christmas novel. There are many characters, who are connected, and I can see how it would cause confusion for those who are not familiar with the series. Although Richard is not a frequent character in the previous books, it is mentioned why he has difficulty going home. It is pretty obvious from the beginning that his rude and arrogant personality is just a way to push everyone away. It is a little predictable how the plot is set up but that doesn’t make it any less touching.
My favorite aspect is Richard returning to his “adoptive” family. He regrets that he left and forgot about them. Seeing their home falling apart, he does everything he can to help them. As with any Christmas story, forgiveness plays a huge part in the plot. This one is inspiring and filled with hope. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars!...more

There is a man and a woman who are not exactly fond of each other and hilariously fall for each other. That is the gist. Merry Knight works as a temp while taking care of her mother who has MS and her brother. Even though she loves her family, she is NOT a fan of her selfish boss. Christmas is a special time and her mother and brother decide that Merry needs a date, so they make her an online dating profile. They choose her profile picture with care…not her best picture, in fact, it isn’t a picture of her at all, but their family dog! Meanwhile, Jay Bright works night and day at his company. Being the boss means having all the pressure. He decides to socialize more and make a dating profile—his picture? Yep, you guessed it, a picture of his childhood dog. These pictures bring them together and they start messaging each other, but they don’t know that they already know each other…
If you are in the mood for a little sappy romantic comedy, this is it! It is cheerful and will bring a smile or two to your face. My favorite character has to be Merry’s brother who is down syndrome. His character shows how amazing those who are a part of the Down syndrome community are! They are clever, smart, funny, and ever so kind. Her brother shows how independent one with down syndrome can be! Now as for Merry, she is sweet and hardworking but possibly a little judgmental. Then there is Jay. He may be hardworking but he is just so oblivious. How can he not know that Merry and Merry are THE SAME PERSON?!?!?! Just saying, it would take multiple Jay’s to change a lightbulb.
Em Eldridge is the narrator of the audiobook and does a splendid job at capturing each personality. The audiobook is a quick listen, only 4 hours! So it would have the perfect audiobook to listen to while baking cookies or decorating the house. It will definitely bring a little Christmas spirit into the home! I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars!...more

It is not often when you come across a collection of poems that just speak to you. What Kind of Woman by Kate Baer is a collection of poems broken up into three parts. Part one is being a woman. Part two is being a wife. Part three is being a mother. While these poems really speak to women, they are for everyone. It can be an experience in the minds of women.
I would read a few poems every day and would end up thinking about them until I read more the next day. This is one of those collections that will stay with you.
