Circling back to say that I loved this book. I thought the atmosphere was eerie and palpable, the way the story unfolds is interesting and kind of unexpected (for me at least), and there were so many quotes I thought were interesting about feminism and racism, I tabbed the hell out of my copy. Just a very good book that would be super thought provoking heading into *witchy* season.
A great pick for speculative/sci-fi readers looking for solid social commentary and good writing. ...more
This was just a wild time. Lots of conversation around racism, capitalism, consumerism, you name it. I really enjoyed these short stories. Strong 4.5!
This was just a wild time. Lots of conversation around racism, capitalism, consumerism, you name it. I really enjoyed these short stories. There was at least one story that I don't think I'll ever forget, but there was a lot of range here. While the commentary was good, some of the stories fit a little less cohesively in the collection? But I'll read anything he writes. I love the way he uses horror to stretch the limits of the real world and our society. Makes for a trippy experience. ...more

The protagonists are a group of friends who are monster hunters, going out and setting traps to catch and kill the Ku Kluxes (the monsters that the Klan turn into).
The characters are amazing and the plot was great — I think this might have landed with me a little bit more if it had been longer. It packed a punch for sure, but it left me wanting more. Characters were introduced quickly and there were a lot of them considering how much time they got?
For anyone looking for literature with social commentary on racism and Jim Crow, this is definitely *the book*. Solid four stars for me....more

It's probably more 3.5 stars. I had no issues with the writing, I actually thought it was good and that the writing style was super cinematic and would work super well as a film. My problem was that I didn't really understand how Bertha and Lucy became friends. Or really how Bertha became immortal? It just felt like the author could've done a better job articulating some of the basics of the backstory.
I also really wished this was dual POV, and it was entirely from Lucy's POV. A real let down especially because Bee was my favorite of the two main characters, and I would've loved to see more of her story with Mr. Rochester and Jane. Anyway, a little bit of a let down overall, considering my excitement for the book based on the premise. ...more

I truly loved the characters and the set-up is incredible but, for a thriller, the middle kind of dragged. I wish they’d solve bits of the mystery gradually as opposed to finding out a lot in the last 30% of the book. I was rooting for them and it became clear fairly early that it was more than just one bully preying on Chiamaka and Devon at their school. But they had to suffer a lot before they even started to discover who Aces was, and I just wanted them to be a little more active in the mystery a little earlier on. (I know that everyone processes that kind of trauma on their own timelines, even fictional characters, so it may be ridiculous for me to be like “why couldn’t they have processed their racially-motivated bullying faster so they could just solve this mystery I’m reading!!”)
The book really picks up in the last 100 pages, so I bumped it from a 3- to a 4-star read. I definitely cared A LOT about the characters, and they were built with deep backstories and nuanced motives and fears, which I thought was a real strength of this story. And big ups, generally, for the representation in this book! It took me a while to get through, but I’d recommend.
Also, this book has a few triggers around anti-LGBTQ+ violence and suicide, so maybe do your own research before reading....more
