Every time I chose not to take a printout, every time I decided to read a pdf instead of buying a hardcopy, every little thing I did for a whole year Every time I chose not to take a printout, every time I decided to read a pdf instead of buying a hardcopy, every little thing I did for a whole year and more to reduce waste and save trees - all of it was rolled-back immediately when I bought this shithouse of a book with all of its artistic and stylized page layouts.
07.07.2024 Review: A book of great conceit and very little else. I have never seen a writer more needy and desperate to jump through so many hoops to convince the readers that he - Mark Z. Danielewski - is really very smart and known very many things. And a master user of QuarkExpress. I mean, bro can really put his thing down, flip it and reverse it. This is the book you write when you can't write books.
08.07.2024 Stray thoughts: The single reason for the character of Johnny to exist in this book seems to be that the author could not trust his own abilities as an author to convey the message and needed someone to bluntly and repeatedly remind the readers exactly how they should be reacting to the book. While the layout and structure have been used to obfuscate plot and hinder readability, Johnny has been used to gaslight the readers into believing they are reading something ground-breaking. And because the primary target audience of this book are 16 year old boys, to make Johnny more relatable to them, Johnny is the hard boiled, edgier version of what every 16 year old boy wants to be. Living a life of callous debauchery of whiskey coke and pussy. (What if Raymond Chandler started writing a YA book but forgot half-way in?) Did the middle-aged author feel no shame or even experience a hint of self awareness as he typed out the exploits of Johnny?

In years to come, in hindsight, I'll probably think the latter....more
