I found the story idea to be interesting: ❌ - I didn’t read this book because I was interested in the plot. I read it because I bought it for my little brother and she DNFed of a few chapters in. I wasn’t too happy about him mistreating my gift like that so I told him that I’d read it myself, and he went on to say in different words, “go ahead, I dare you to.” I suffered through this read because I found it to be incredibly corny is too many instances, but alas, finishing this book became a matter of pride. I will not lose to a fourteen year old.
There were few to no instances in which the writing or writing style detracted from my reading experience in a jarring way: ✅ - The writing style was fine.
I found the plot to be well executed (little to no plot holes, appropriate pacing): ✅ - The plot wasn’t magnificent, but it is a middle school read, so I’m not going to be too picky here.
I found the world building to be immersive and particularly well done: ✅ - The world building really was well done. I was able to imagine some of the scenes of underwater life and fantastical technology rather easily.
I liked the main character or felt personally connected to them in some way: ✅ - I didn’t fall in love with Ana, but she was a decent and strong character, so I didn’t have any issues with her.
I adored the chemistry between the MC and the love interest/other significant characters: ❌ - I wasn’t attached to any characters, and therefore, I didn’t feel connected to any relationships or dynamics.
This book made me reflect on some aspect of life in a meaningful or socially productive way: ❌ - Even if there were lessons to learn from this book, they didn’t make me reflect in any noteworthy or meaningful way.
I was moved emotionally at some point during my reading experience: ❌ - I didn’t feel emotional at any point in this reading experience.
I was satisfied with the ending: ✅ - There was nothing wrong with the ending.
There is a page-turning, unputdownable element to this story, and I would re-read happily or recommend passionately: ❌ - I struggled to finish this book. I know that it was meant for a very young audience, but the fact that no one could die or even get what they deserved was a little difficult for me to stomach.
*EXTRA CREDIT* Half point available (1/4 ⭐️) for a book with some intriguing albeit minor element that makes me feel inclined to award a slightly higher rating: ❌ - I see no reason why I should award extra credit. There was a point during this read where I listened to the audiobook at 2.2x speed. I had to slow it down quite a bit thought because my pride wouldn’t let me half ass the read, and then I read the last part of the book via my physical copy. Both of those decisions were made following the taunts of my little brother, who demanded that I read the book “for real.”
