A book inspired by Poe? Count me in! This atmospheric, slow-paced psychological suspense novel nods to Edgar Allan Poe and his former fiancée, Sarah Helen Whitman.
The story follows Saoirse White, a novelist with a traumatic past who is struggling with writer’s block, among other issues. To escape her demons, she relocates to Providence shortly after the death of her husband, unwittingly renting the historic home of Sarah Helen Whitman, the nineteenth-century poet and spiritualist once courted by Edgar Allan Poe. Soon, the turbulent courtship of Poe and Whitman begins to mirror Saoirse’s own life.
Saoirse starts experiencing a series of Poe-themed coincidences: strange noises in her house, a tackle with a trio of eccentric occultists obsessed with Whitman who become her friends, and stumbling upon a Poe display at the local library. A chance meeting with the famous author Emmit Powell, who bears an eerie resemblance to both her late husband and Poe, pulls her deeper into the lives of Poe and Whitman and the mystery surrounding Whitman’s house. As her relationship with Emmit rapidly deepens, she finds herself entangled in a web of mystery, secrets, and lies.
In the tradition of atmospheric gothic novels, this book offers a mystery rich in period detail and sinister intrigue. I enjoyed learning about the history of Sarah Whitman and Edgar Allan Poe and appreciated the parallels the author drew between them and Saoirse. The inclusion of poems and the voice of Saoirse’s late husband in her head added to the eerie atmosphere.
There's a solid cast of supporting characters, and Saoirse is a well-rounded protagonist. However, there were moments when I wanted to shake her. She fell in love too quickly, made poor choices - such as neglecting her health by drinking - and was too easily swayed by others. Despite her flaws, her vulnerability touched me, and I rooted for her throughout. The novel explores several serious themes, including drugs, abuse, toxic relationships, depression, life and death, and, of course, Poe-inspired elements.
While I enjoyed the book, a few things irritated me. A character was given LSD without her knowledge or consent, and this was brushed off with a mere slap on the wrist. Additionally, Saoirse’s neglect of her diabetic cat was troubling, and despite warnings from her friends, she continued to make poor decisions.
The book had all the elements of a great story - ghosts, catacombs, secret passages, séances, chanting voices, residual hauntings, and a forgotten cemetery - but these elements were somewhat muddled by the slow pacing, meandering plot, and excessive introspection. The first two-thirds of the book focuses on character development and setting the stage for the various themes and mystery, and the pace only picks up toward the last third.
The final third was its saving grace. It was intense, keeping me on the edge of my seat and reading into the wee hours. I had to know what would become of our heroine. I decided to rate it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a good book, but it could benefit from some refining. Tightening up the plot would make it a better read. I recommend it to fans of gothic novels and Poe’s work.

It’s the first book in a series and one of those that are nearly impossible to put down once you’ve begun. The story kicks off with a bang and never lets up.
The narrative centers around Vaasa Kozár, a princess of Asterya who believes she is cursed. She harbors dark magic within her that she can neither control nor understand. To make matters worse, she has a brother who wants her dead and a husband she didn’t choose. After their parents' death, her cruel brother, Dominic, ascends as Emperor. To rid himself of Vaasa, he marries her off to a ruthless foreign ruler, Reid of Mireh.
But Vaasa isn’t your typical helpless heroine. She possesses political savvy, combat skills, speaks six languages, and knows how to hold her own. Her arranged marriage starts on the wrong foot, and what unfolds is an intriguing tale that blends political intrigue, action, magic, and a steamy, enemies-to-lovers slow-burn romance.
I loved this book. It’s the perfect example of a page-turner. The writing is clear and engaging without being simplistic, pulling me in from the first page. The world-building, characters, magic, political systems, and suspenseful plot make it a thoroughly enjoyable and captivating read.
The plot is complex and creatively executed, making the story feel fresh and unique - a breath of fresh air in the genre. I was particularly impressed by the intricate plotting. Every action was well thought out, and Vaasa's intelligence, bravery, and ability to confront her demons despite her fears and insecurities won me over. I appreciated what the Serpent and the Wolf symbolized and admired how Robinson didn’t spoon-feed us answers, allowing events to unfold naturally.
The characters are fantastic, ranging from honorable to downright wicked. Vaasa, in particular, is incredibly well-drawn. Robinson skillfully delves into her deepest thoughts and emotions, making her a real, relatable character. Though she was a bit irritating at times with her attitude and reluctance to open up, I appreciated the way she grew and developed throughout the story. The dynamic and sexual tension between Vaasa and Reid were also compelling.
The author rises above clichés to craft a story that feels fresh and less predictable than it might have been. The side characters are mostly well-developed, adding depth to the narrative. This is a story that highlights the importance of personal strength, perseverance, support, community, friendships, and love. It's worth mentioning, however, that there are a couple of steamy scenes, which fit seamlessly into the story.
My only minor complaint is the frequent use of swear words, which didn’t seem to fit the world Robinson created. Nonetheless, this novel was everything I could have wished for and more. It wasn’t just entertaining; it also provided something I love to see in a book - moral conflict.
While it might not be entirely new to the genre, it’s definitely a cut above many others. If you enjoy an intense story with a brilliant cast of characters, a satisfying story arc, and emotional depth dealing with grief, loss, bullying, trauma, loneliness, and rising above one’s upbringing, then this book is for you. The action-packed ending is impossible to put down and leaves you on a cliffhanger. I must read the second book in the series now!

Mayo offers an original and hilarious answer, filling in those gaps in an entertaining way. It’s a refreshing retelling of the Cinderella story and the first book in the ‘Fairies and Familiars’ series.
The book starts with the famous ball from the Cinderella tale and recaps her story. From there, it jumps 18 months ahead and follows 18-year-old Lady Theodosia Balfour (aka Theo). The Balfour family is having a tough time after Princess Beatrice (aka Cinderella) escaped their grasp. They’re facing financial difficulties, are banned from the palace, and are frowned upon by high society. Theo, considered the "ugly" sister, is rude, short-tempered, and nasty. While her sister Flo is engaged to her beloved, no suitor comes knocking on Theo's door.
To resolve their money issues, Lady Balfour arranges Theo’s marriage to an elderly Duke. In desperation, Theo seeks a way out and finds a method to summon a fairy - the very same fairy godmother who supposedly helped her stepsister. She beseeches the fairy (Cecily) to help her get out of the marriage. Cecily agrees, but first, Theo must complete three tasks. Cecily’s familiars - a human-turned-mockingbird named Phineas and a cranky fox shapeshifter named Kasara - assist her in this endeavor. What follows is an entertaining tale.
I absolutely loved the story. Theo isn’t a likable heroine at first, but as you get to know her backstory, your perspective changes. The author does a fantastic job of explaining Theo’s behavior and challenging our preconceived notions about her. In this tale, characters aren’t simply black and white. Beatrice isn’t perfect, and Theo isn’t entirely wicked - she has redeeming qualities.
Though initially insufferable, Theo’s growth made me eventually like her and root for her. Her character development is well-fleshed out, making her more relatable. She’s sharp-witted, sharp-tongued, determined, and brave. Her transformation feels genuine, especially given how worthless she felt due to her upbringing.
The story starts slow, but the pace picks up after a couple of chapters. Aside from one repeated sentence in the same passage - “Not knowing what else to do,” which could be rephrased - the writing flows well. It’s very detailed, allowing you to vividly picture each character, place, and scene. The side characters and the banter between Theo, Kasara, and others add to the charm.
I also loved the humor throughout the book, which brought a light-hearted tone to the story. Despite this, the book also delves into some heavy themes like self-esteem and the need to be loved and accepted, which gives it depth. The book also explores issues such as toxic mother-daughter relationships, self-image, women’s plight in a patriarchal society, and how we adapt ourselves to society’s expectations.
To sum it up, I enjoyed the book immensely and would recommend it to fans of fairy tales and retelling who are looking for something original. I was thrilled to learn that another book in the series is on the way and can’t wait to read it. Full stars from me!

"Darkly" is a dark YA thriller that dives into the mysterious world of a reclusive game designer, old-school board games, and obsessive players caught up in the enigmatic Darkly games.
The story centers on Arcadia "Dia" Gannon, an outsider and loner who helps her mother run their antique shop. Her only friends are two elderly employees at the shop. With her anachronistic mannerisms, she’s the odd one out at school, often the target of ridicule. When the Louisiana Veda Foundation, based in England, announces an international contest for a summer internship, Dia, a self-professed game addict, applies with little hope of success.
To her great surprise, Dia is chosen, along with six other teenagers: Poe from France, Franz from Germany, Cooper from the USA, Torin from Ireland, Everleigh from Iceland, and Mouse from Nigeria. Upon arriving in England, the interns are thrust into a real-life board game filled with tricks, hidden symbols, secrets, and danger. What follows is a grand adventure that puts their lives at risk.
This is a complex story packed with adventure, mystery, suspense, and plenty of twists. I devoured it and found myself wanting to live in its world forever. The plot races from the beginning, constantly picking up pace and growing darker as it immerses the reader into its richly imagined world. There are countless adventures and mishaps, all underscored by a fascinating array of games.
The book is interspersed with illustrations, letters, diagrams, news articles, maps, and photos, all of which enhance the narrative. It’s beautifully written, capturing the reader's imagination from the first chapter. Pessl’s unique style - her poetic language, creativity, wit, and humor -creates a distinctive reading experience. Yes, the prose may be a bit purple at times, but that’s part of its charm and doesn’t interfere with the story's flow.
Tension and drama are key to keeping readers hooked, and this book delivers in spades. While Dia is the most fully fleshed-out character, each of the interns has their own backstory and secret. Amidst the suspense and adventure, there’s also a gentle touch of youthful romance. The plot moved swiftly, keeping me fully engaged and anxious to know what would happen next. However, the ending felt a bit abrupt, leaving me with some questions, though most loose ends were tied up.
Pessl rises above clichés to craft an original story, with twists and turns that keep the reader alert and engaged. Sometimes the technique is not enough if the content is not revolutionary, but this is not the case here. In this case, the "how" is what makes the book, and the "what" is reasonable. I wasn't entirely pleased with the open ending, even though most loose ends were tied up; I would have preferred a more conclusive resolution.
In sum, "Darkly" is a mesmerizing book that I absolutely loved. Dysfunctional families, brilliant game scenes, puzzles, and intrigue are just some of the ingredients that take this book to the next level. The characters, setting, and dialogue feel real, even if the teenagers are far from average. The dark atmosphere is convincingly sketched, making for a gripping read. Marisha Pessl has crafted an extraordinary tale that I highly recommend.

Day does a great job weaving a captivating story and creating interesting, believable characters I could care about (most of them, anyway).
Mary lives in an isolated cabin in the Scottish Highlands with her husband, Cal, a tree surgeon. She never leaves the place and tries to be the "perfect wife" for him. According to Cal, the "perfect wife" is one who keeps the house clean and orderly, has a warm meal waiting on the table, and welcomes him home with a warm smile and a pretty dress.
At first, all seems ideal. Mary follows his rules to the letter and appears satisfied with her lot, living as a housewife from the fifties. But it quickly becomes clear to the reader that something is off in this relationship. The plot thickens when Mary discovers she wasn't the first wife, and she may not be the last...
I LOVED the book and was glued to the story right up to the very last page. You get to know the characters, and what some of them went through really matters to you. Though the theme may not be entirely original, the execution is smooth and absorbing. Compelling characters, an engrossing plot, and polished execution make this a great read.
The book is written primarily from Mary's perspective, with two other women's points of view and a brief passage from Cal's perspective. At first, I thought Mary was naive for putting herself in this situation. But as the plot unfolded, I grew to respect her courage and determination, even though she acted foolishly at times, and I found myself rooting for her. I strongly disliked Cal and found him contemptible.
The more I learned about the plot, the more suspenseful it became. The use of foreshadowing was well done, setting the mood and adding dramatic tension to the story. The creepy atmosphere gets into the reader's head and holds them in rapture, gradually developing into nerve-wracking tension.
The book explores themes of manipulation, gaslighting, controlling and toxic relationships, emotional and physical abuse, and mother-child relationships. The narrative delves into the depths of the human psyche, and it isn't a pretty sight. I was really able to get into the mindset of each character and empathize with some.
Overall, I was impressed with the story. The author's writing technique makes the book an engaging read. It's a fast-paced book with plot twists that keep the reader on their toes, eager to see what comes next. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good suspense novel. You’re pushed to keep turning pages (or swiping your finger) until the very end. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I loved returning to Marcus's world. Any new book in this series feels like reconnecting with an old friend. The book is full of twists, time jumps back and forth - a bit too many past remembrances - and reflections on the meaning of success and its fallout, simpler (and possibly happier) times, and finding happiness. As a side note, I had no problem following the time jumps and keeping up with the events.
While the book stands on its own, there are some characters and events mentioned from previous books, though without spoilers. You don’t have to read the previous books to understand what’s going on, but it is preferable as they are good, and you might miss the fine nuances.
This is not a purely detective novel, and the murder isn’t the main focus. The book is a winning combination of prose and psychological tension, seasoned with humor and insights. Although the book isn’t without clichés - Marcus’s mother always urges him to find a girlfriend, and his publisher talks only about money and windows of opportunity - this does not detract from its value.
The uniqueness of the book lies in the combination of the murder mystery and the vivid description of Marcus Goldman's world. The story is full of interesting observations, some cynical and critical, about the world of literature, success, and the fear of failure. The book starts slow, but the pace picks up around the middle.
The plot could have benefited from some tightening up - fewer memories and more focus on the inquiry - but this is just a minor gripe. Overall, I enjoyed the book immensely and highly recommend it. The book's description is a bit misleading; it isn’t a cozy fantasy but rather a dark fairy tale/fantasy, more akin to Uprooted by Naomi Novik than Howl’s Moving Castle. Despite this, it was a fantastic adventure, and I loved it! The author weaves together an excellent, unique book that hooked me from beginning to end.
Foss Butcher is the butcher's daughter and is quite unpopular in her village. Her mother died giving birth to her, leading the villagers to deem her cursed. Her plain looks (as she describes them) keep suitors away, much to her heartbreak. Every now and then, sorcerers arrive in her village and snag hearts - partly or whole - using them to enhance their abilities and protect the kingdom, or so the tales go.
A good book needs two key ingredients: a compelling story and skilled writing. This book has both. I enjoyed it immensely and couldn’t stop reading. The pace is slow at times, but this was necessary to set up the plot and introduce the history and magic system of the world. The world-building is impeccable and intriguing, immersing the reader and keeping the tale exciting and believable. We meet characters living in a detailed, feudal society and are thrust into the land’s web of politics and social issues.
The book starts with a little quirkiness but then takes a dark turn. The heroine's dry humor and strong personality come across loud and clear, making it easy to like her and root for her. Contrary to other opinions, I didn’t find her irritating at all, and my heart went out to her. Foss’s character may be more developed than Sylvester's, but I was invested in both of their struggles. I loved the development of their relationship, their interactions, and the slow-burn romance.
My favorite character was the cat! It’s often said that children and animals steal the show, and that was certainly the case here. Go, Cornelius! I also loved the bond between Foss and her father and the way she cared for her village, despite their bad treatment of her. She chose to let bygones be bygones, which only made her more endearing. Some of Foss’s choices made me pull my hair out, but they did propel the plot.
I found the writing engaging in most parts, and the plot was compelling enough to earn full stars. The themes of friendship, family, love, attachment, and self-image issues are skillfully interwoven into this dark tale. The excitement builds, especially in the second half, culminating in a more-than-satisfying ending. I loved the book and highly recommend it to fans of dark fairy tales and cleverly imagined, unique plots.

The concept is very interesting. Four couples participate in a reality TV show, “Relationship Rescue,” set on a tropical island in the Caribbean to save their relationships. Each couple has their own issues, secrets, and agenda: Pregnant Lauren and Tristan, Tatiana and Zarine (a gay couple), Cain and his wife Naomi (a Christian couple), and Blanche and Joshua (a suburban couple). The plot thickens when a murder occurs on the last day of the program, and they are stuck on the island with a murderer.
The author has concocted an intriguing concept, and her writing style is captivating and absorbing. I flew through the pages. The book is written in the first person from multiple perspectives and combines the police interviews of the cast and contestants. While I will never participate in a reality show or am a fan of it, I love reading about it. While the first half of the book focuses on the process, the second half focuses on the murder investigation while continuing with the show. After all, the show must go on...
The author does a great job bringing you into the characters' lives. I loved that each chapter was headed with the character’s name, as it made it easier to differentiate between them. As the plot unfolded, their voices became clearer. We got to know more about the characters who narrated the story than the others. They were more well-fleshed out. Each character has a secret or surprise that slowly unfolds as the story progresses. It is these secrets and surprises that keep the reader on their toes and encourage you to read the next chapter to find out more.
I didn't like most of the contestants (they were all self-centered and unlikable). To be accurate, I liked one or two of the contestants (Lauren, Cain, Tatiana), but my fondness fizzled out the more I got to know them. I found the process and the dynamics of the couples very interesting. I also liked how each couple had a different set of issues.
The author weaves together an excellent, unique book, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader hooked. Interwoven within this exciting tale are themes of family, loyalty, infidelity, toxic relationships, daddy issues, and hate speech on social media. I didn't guess the identity of the culprit(s), and the plot kept me guessing right up until the end.
While I loved the book, I didn't like the ending and found it abrupt. Because of that and because I am tired of culprits getting away with things they did, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. It was an excellent book, but the ending did not leave me fully satisfied; I wanted a bit more closure and justice. I still recommend the book, as I really enjoyed the way it was written and the way the author expertly built the tension and atmosphere throughout the book.

The book starts with a bang, featuring murders, and then jumps forward 26 years. The story follows Polly, a young woman who escaped a stalker only to walk out of the frying pan into the fire. She attends an art retreat in the Lake District to decompress from her ordeal and to learn more about her birth family who used to live there, and finds more than she can handle.
The Lakeside House has a horrid history; its previous owners supposedly took their own lives there, but no bodies were ever found. Pretty soon, Polly finds that her troubles have followed her. The new owners are receiving disturbing threats, someone is sabotaging her artwork, and the place has a creepy undercurrent. The plot takes a sinister turn when disturbing incidents keep occurring, one of the guests goes missing, and the worsening weather conditions trap them there.
I loved the book, and the plot kept me guessing right up until the end. The story moves at a good pace with plenty of twists and turns to build suspense. While I suspected one twist, the others caught me by surprise. I liked Polly, was anxious about what happened to her, and rooted for her.
Moving between past and present, what unfolds is a tale of abuse, control, environmental concerns, fallible human nature, and love. The writing is taut and suspenseful, and the author expertly builds tension and atmosphere throughout the book. The characters are well-drawn, each with their own distinct personality.
The author has crafted an engrossing mystery that keeps you interested from beginning to end. I liked the writing and the way the story unfolded before my very eyes. The author doesn't give us all the information at once. Bit by bit, she uncovers more pieces from the past and connects the dots.
To sum up, I enjoyed the book very much and found it original and intriguing. It kept me excited and interested throughout the novel. It was well-written, with good, interesting characters, a compelling premise, and suspense. If you enjoy stories with complex plots and vacations gone awry, this is the book for you.

While on the road, she meets Mash, an ex-mercenary who writes bad poetry, and his friend Silt, an ex-thief. Before she knows it, she joins their quest to find Mash's missing four-year-old daughter. Along the way, they are joined by a baker (Kina) and a slightly magical cat (Fidelitus). Thus begins a grand adventure as they try to dodge the magefinder sent by the Mage Guild after her.
I loved the book! It reminded me of two series I love: Legends & Lattes and the Monk and Robot books (especially the tea ceremony in the latter). I enjoyed the growing friendship between the crew, the character development, and the setting. The characters were finely drawn and came to life as their interactions revealed bits of their past. I could almost smell the baked goods, taste the tea fragrances, and see myself sitting by their campfire, listening to Mash quote his poetry.
The reader is quickly wrapped up in the lives of the characters - great characters you can deeply connect with and care about. The book explores themes of friendship, loyalty, mutual support, racism, political conflict, grief, parental neglect, free will vs. fate, family, identity, and belonging. The experience of an immigrant caught between cultures was well-etched and resonated with me.
The pacing of the book is well-balanced - not too fast or too slow - allowing the reader to fully immerse themselves in the characters' journey. This steady pace complements the cozy, nature of the story, making it easy to savor each moment. The ending was satisfying and left me yearning for more.
In sum, this is a feel-good and heartwarming book that leaves you feeling all warm inside. Very engrossing and sweeping, I loved every minute of it and highly recommend it! If you enjoy curling up with a good book and being whisked away to another place, this is the book for you!

"The Good Bride" by Jen Marie Wiggins is a slow-burn family drama told from multiple POVs. I had high expectations for the book, but unfortunately, they weren't fully met.
The book follows the Bancroft family, who are as dysfunctional as they come. Bride-to-be Ruth Bancroft is marrying Teo in a quaint fishing village on the Gulf Coast, where her mother resides. Cracks in the family start to show as the wedding preparations continue.
Weddings are stressful affairs, even more so when secrets and lies bubble under the surface. The arrival of Ruth's estranged father adds to the existing tension. The plot thickens when Ruth begins receiving anonymous notes warning her that "she is next." Things come to a head when gunshots disrupt the rehearsal dinner and a guest goes missing. As secrets start spilling out, what was supposed to be a happy event quickly turns into a debacle.
The story is mostly character-driven, focusing more on the traits and emotions of the characters, with only minimal action. I liked the main characters, Ruth and Teo, although Ruth was more well-developed. The book explores themes of messy family liaisons, modern media, lies, betrayal, and fallible human nature, which I found intriguing.
While the premise intrigued me initially, I struggled to connect with the narrative. It is more of a family drama than a thriller, with not much happening until the last third of the book. Although there are some tense moments, especially towards the end, they aren't quite enough to sustain the plot's momentum. The pace was extremely slow, and I didn’t feel a sense of urgency to keep reading. The plot plods along with limited action, focusing instead on the characters and the setting. Still, there are some interesting turns toward the end.
Overall, I enjoyed the book despite its flaws. The interactions between the characters, their dynamics, and the setting were well done. I also appreciated the writing, felt invested in the characters' fates, and liked the ending. I loved that Ruth finally grew a backbone and learned to stand up for herself. Therefore, I rate the book 3 out of 5 stars and recommend it to fans of slow-burn family dramas. There was definitely drama here.

Told in the third person, the book starts with a bang - a kidnapping of a toddler - and then jumps forward four years. Shannon Gibbons is an orphan, a mother, and a housewife who has dabbled in true crime stories online for years. When 65-year-old renowned journalist Rosella Marlow offers to be her mentor, she eagerly agrees and moves with her family to Rosella's neighborhood, the Fab-Forties of East Sacramento.
She quickly befriends her new neighbors and feels at home there, but Rosella is another kettle of fish. Rosella is bitter, resentful, and hated by all, and she is sure someone is after her. She asks for Shannon's help with this. The plot thickens when someone is found murdered, and that's when things get interesting.
The start of the book is very slow, and it took me a while to get into it. Things liven up after the murder, and from that point on, I was engrossed in the book. There are several plotlines woven into a mostly consistent whole. While I guessed early on the identity of the culprit, other twists caught me by surprise. There may have been one or two loose ends, but they weren't significant to the plot.
There is a large cast of characters, but I had no problem differentiating between them or keeping up with the story. With themes of trauma, loneliness, grief, infidelity, and the need for belonging, the author has woven a tale that I enjoyed reading.
I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars due to the slow start and some predictable and far-fetched turns. A tighter edit would have given the book a more polished look, but I still enjoyed it. It is a delightful read with engaging, multifaceted characters that will keep you enthralled. Despite the minor flaws, it is still worth reading. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological suspense novels with a punch and a satisfying conclusion.

It is well-written, well-plotted, and kept me interested throughout.
The book follows Lennon Carter, a college dropout turned housewife who is invited to enroll in Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah. Students at the school learn to hone their gift of persuasion - the ability to control others and, in rare cases, even affect matter itself. At first, all goes well, and Drayton seems like heaven to Lennon. She is captivated by her studies, the campus, her brilliant classmates, and her charismatic adviser, Dante. But something is rotten in Drayton College. And if she is not careful, she will be destroyed by it.
I loved the book and couldn't stop reading. It started a bit slow, but then the pace picked up. The author keeps the story's pace up, and the secrets that are revealed are exciting indeed. The dark atmosphere is well-sketched and convincing. It is one of the best dark academia books I have read recently. It's full of atmosphere. The author writes the scenery and atmosphere so well that the reader is swept into that world.
The book has everything I like about the genre: complex and morally gray characters, good world-building and a magic system, intrigue, and even a bit of romance between an unlikely pair. Additionally, it deals with themes of mental illness, abuse, drug use, friendship, moral conflicts, and teacher/student relationships.
Lennon is imperfect, as likable as she is flawed. I liked the delicate way her mental issues were described. I didn't like or approve of some of her choices and actions. It wasn't easy to relate to her, but I warmed up to her. Her sister was really annoying, quick to judge and criticize. Dante was intriguing, and I liked his mysterious stranger vibes.
I loved the diverse ethnicity, the LGBTQIA+ representation, and the backstories. I really liked that the characters were portrayed as real people with flaws. The author also managed to surprise me with a couple of twists. There are some unanswered questions, though, such as the mystery of the moth, which wasn't clear until the end.
The world-building, characters, magic system, themes, and suspenseful plot make it an enjoyable and engaging read. The book stands on its own, but its ending implies there may be another book on the way (I certainly hope there is). If you love dark academia and flawed characters and don't mind a bit of violent action, then this is totally for you. Full stars from me!

Devastated, she seeks to contact him via mediums and séances, which turn out to be charlatans.
When her family finds a reputable medium—a professor of parapsychology—and proposes a séance at a secluded place, she agrees and decides to give it one last chance. The plot thickens when strange occurrences take place at the Lake Erie beach house they rented, reawakening old nightmares from her past.
I loved the book! There is nothing like a good spooky paranormal/ghost-hunting story to get your juices going. This is not your typical ghost story either! It is a creepy tale full of twists and shocking revelations with a spooky atmosphere. The book is written from Nicola's first-person point of view and combines flashbacks into her past. It explores themes of loss, grief, depression, trust, and family.
The book is well written with an engaging storyline, well-rounded characters, and a unique plot. The dark atmosphere was well sketched and convincing, with the creaking of an old dumbwaiter, creepy porcelain dolls, and eerie voices. The tense atmosphere and freaky supernatural occurrences get into your head and make you begin to doubt your own grip on sanity, along with that of the character, but it wasn't too scary if you get my drift.
The author takes the paranormal and adds it to real, normal life. She makes the unreal believable. The feeling of dread in this book grows with one incident after another. I did feel that the heroine took some unnecessary risks and acted recklessly. There were times I wanted to shake her, and I was afraid for her.
Overall, it was a great tale that kept me in suspense right up to the last page. I loved that we didn't know what was real and what wasn't, and the way the author combined past and present, real and unreal. I enjoyed the read and would recommend it to those who enjoy ghost tales with secrets, intricate relationships, and chilling paranormal activity.

This intriguing premise, set in Australia, forms the backbone of Moriarty's latest tale.
Passengers on a plane from Hobart to Sydney are told the time and cause of their death by a mysterious old lady the press dubs the "Death Lady." Initially, no one takes these predictions seriously until some of them start coming true. The book follows several of these passengers, alternating between their perspectives (in the third person) and the fortune teller’s (in the first person). Some fight their fate, while others accept it.
The book explores themes of free will vs. predestination, grief, fate, and love, as well as the Butterfly Effect. This theory from chaos science explains how a tiny change in one part of the world can cause a huge effect elsewhere. The fortune teller is that butterfly, setting in motion a series of events that affect the lives of the passengers. As we get to know them, their interactions can also be thought of as additional ripples in this effect.
The book started slowly but picked up pace. Overall, I enjoyed it. Despite its length, it was a quick read. It was fascinating to read about the different reactions of the people to their predictions. At first, I enjoyed the passengers' portions more than the fortune teller's, but she grew on me. While I appreciated her backstory, I think the author could have tightened some of those portions and trimmed some of the philosophical rants.
I loved how the different storylines were connected, even if it felt a bit contrived at times. The message of living each day as if it were your last, while not new, was conveyed effectively. The book’s exploration of fate and healing resonated with me. Moriarty's writing style, as always, is engaging and vivid, making the characters' journeys compelling. I loved the book and found it very touching. I definitely recommend it to those who enjoy stories about fate, healing, and finding oneself.

This is the story of Nadya, a drowned girl who finds a new home in Belyyreka, a water world. She is a Russian orphan born with half of her right arm but doesn't see it as a handicap. She is adopted by an American couple when she is nine years old and whisked off to America. The couple doesn't see her as complete due to her missing limb and gets her a prosthetic arm without asking her or giving her a choice in the matter.
Nadya loves tortoises and spends most of her time at the tortoise pond until one day she drowns in the lake and passes through a door into Belyyreka, Land Beneath the Lake, a land filled with child-eating amphibians, talking foxes, and giant turtles. She is accepted by the River and its people, but the land isn't without dangers to the unwary. Just when she thinks she is safe, danger looms.
I loved the book and enjoyed reading Nadya's backstory. There isn't a lot of action, but the world was interesting to explore. The ending was a bit abrupt, and I hope there are more books in the series to come. I loved that Nadya never considered herself less than whole despite her disability and was at peace with herself, unlike the society that sees her as flawed. This underscores a powerful message: appearances don't determine us; our inner strength and self-acceptance define who we truly are.
This is a book about friendship, trust, family, acceptance, choices, and their consequences. The book can be read on its own, but I still recommend reading the other books in the series to get the spirit of it. Also, this is a great series! I can't wait to read the next book! Highly recommended, of course!

All witches have a task to complete before their death, or dire consequences will ensue.
Each sister has her own talent and personality. Anne is the most stable and powerful of the three, Violet is a creature of action, and Beatrix is the dreamy one. The plot thickens when the sisters discover there is a curse designed to separate them. They find themselves being pulled in different directions and have to find a way to stay together without losing their dreams if they can.
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but it was quite slow to start and took me a while to get into the meat of the story. Once I got in, I couldn't stop reading. I loved the premise and the idea of an enchanted tea shop and a sentient house. A house that cleans itself and does the dishes?? I want one too! And drinking tea while getting a reading is the perfect combination. I loved the writing and could envision the setting. I also loved the heading of each chapter and the descriptions beneath it, portending what is to come.
The book explores themes of sisterhood, self-discovery, fate, destiny, choices, and magic. The message that sometimes to stay close you have to let go came loud and clear. I loved the bond between the sisters, although they irritated me at times. They wanted to stay together, yet let their secrets (each has one) pull them apart. Besides Anne, the others didn't do much to overcome the curse. I did love how each found their own path, though.
The author writes the scenery and atmosphere of the Tearoom so well that you’ll be able to smell the mouth-watering scones and cakes and almost taste the flavors of tea. It certainly gave me the desire for a good cup of tea, preferably with my fortune told. If you're looking for a feel-good read that leaves you warm inside, this is your cup of tea (pun intended). This novel has great characters you can deeply connect with and care about, a great premise, and sweeping writing.

The book follows a family on the run after an epidemic of rage turns the affected people into vicious murderers who kill all those who weren't affected. Jack Colclough, a professor of philosophy, his estranged wife Dee, and their two children have to run for their lives after hearing on the radio that people are coming to kill them for some reason or another.
The epidemic has affected a large portion of the US and Mexico, leaving nowhere safe. Additionally, the power has gone out, so there is no electricity, no internet, and no cell phones. Combined with the killing rampage, the picture is dark indeed. Their harrowing journey leads them through burned cities, mass murders, and other horrific acts of violence as they search for a safe place to take shelter. What follows is one hell of a ride.
The story is told from the third-person points of view of Jack and Dee, and it plays out against a vast, unforgiving landscape. I love a good survival story, and this book certainly met my expectations. I loved the concept, even though it is not entirely original, and enjoyed the book very much. I have to say that I found the wife a bit irritating at first with her complaints every time Jack wanted to refuel the car. There were some repetitious sequences (running, fighting, finding bodies), but there was enough tension to keep the story going. There are some graphic scenes that some may find disturbing. The reality can be even more stark, though.
This is an action-packed tale that kept me turning the pages as I sat on the edge of my seat. It would make a great movie. It may be a "popcorn" read, but sometimes popcorn is just what the doctor ordered. The pace of the book is intense and pulls you from one action-packed event to the next without letting up. This keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what could happen next to our main characters.

Soon, it becomes clear that the surface of their marriage may glitter, but there are cracks beneath it. The story alternates between the characters in the third-person POV, offering an intriguing dynamic between them. While most of the characters weren't relatable or likable, I didn't care for Jemma and Adam, I felt for Chloe and her struggles. Her care for her mother and the dog especially captured my heart.

I liked the inclusion of the podcast narrating the events, which served to muddy the waters. Things aren’t always what they seem. The layers of the story gradually unravel and collapse, leading to the final revelation. While I liked the book, some parts made me uneasy, so I had to take a break from reading at times.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found it engaging. It has surprising developments and twists, unexpected revelations, and deceptive characters, which makes it an easy read. The saying "Enough is as Good as a Feast" came to mind while reading the book. Everyone had secrets, some more terrible than others.
