I’ve always enjoyed a good buccaneer tale, like the old Errol Flynn flicks. Elle Pepper's "The Shallows" was a refreshing reminder of the adventures of the high seas and swashbucklers. It’s a good bold story of strong men. The characters are an interesting crews whether they be good, bad or ugly. I must admit sorting through the unusual names and the use of language kept me on my toes. There came a time a flow in the book or my understanding of the language occurred and merrily I read on. Ms Pepper descriptives are colorfully vivid and in sharp techicolor.
The poem at the start of the book is very coo: (excerpt & not in order) Two sons, distant brothers Each one, fear the other One of blood, One of fire One must find his hearts desire Age-old traitor, with power voice Will make the brothers face a choice Betray the blood, to quench the fire, And receive his ‘hearts desire’
Oo, so mysteries and romantic. I must admit, I did fantasize about the handsome Captain Jalen Shenn, Captain of the Free Boards (ship) Dragon Wynd. He is handsome, loyal, bold and honorable in a pirate sort of way. We meet him at the very beginning, awaiting the noose as Captain Thaddeus Silvermane, captain of the Wolf ’s Brigade, prepares to give the order. Jalen outsmarts both and once again leaves the rope swinging empty of his neck. He resumes his mission to find his wife, and to understand more about his family legacy, one that causes fear within the Empire.
As difficult the story’s language was to follow I still enjoyed the story. Ms. Pepper is a talented writer.
