The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man. This paragraph took forever to get right and I played Charlie Haden and Pat Metheny’s “Spiritual” from their album Beyond the Missouri Sky (Short Stories) uncountable times trying to get the words. I was trying to write the inchoate feelings of Jack and Ennis, the sad impossibility of their liaison, which for me was expressed in that music. To this day I cannot hear that track without Jack and Ennis appearing before me. The scraps that feed a story come from many cupboards.
... and finally how female characters in the story evolved and helped in giving totality to this beautiful story.
Book opens with the short story titled 'Brokeback Mountain' written by Annie Proulx, followed by screenplay written by Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana.
But the real excitement starts with the following chapters enveloped in how this little story is turned into a terrific screenplay (Interviews involving writers Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana exploring how they approached the story in writing their screenplay and how they were turned down multiple times by studios; a struggle story and not finding the right person to direct this in some cases and so on) and in turn, how this screenplay is made into a heart wrenching film (Involving director Ang Lee and his personal sorrow at that time and how he creatively turned his personal sense of loss into this beautiful film etc., and Ann's interesting observations regarding working style of this very talented director)
Brokeback Mountain is one of the powerful stories that is very close to my heart, and learning how this film has evolved from very idea level and stories which helped shaping this heart breaking love story are even more thrilling.
