Ok, so the heroine is a thirty something ditz with the maturity level of a tadpole and the brains of a bucket of slop. She's also really into her Dad.
Exhibit A: "They say men are attracted to women who are like their mothers and women are attracted to men who are like their fathers. This must be true considering I’m attracted to hot, uber-macho, bossy guys.”
Exhibit B: “Back in the day, my Dad was hot. He was almost as hot as the two men standing in my kitchen”
Exhibit C: “his Dad, like my Dad, had managed to age without losing but a modicum of hotness.”

Also, immediately after being robbed and attacked by some bad guy she thinks this: "“I was pretty pleased I’d worn my kickass, mocha colored, soft-knit, short bat-sleeved caftan to bed. Caftans weren’t known to be hot but that one was, mainly because it was uber-clingy in all the right places. That caftan rocked and it was the chosen nightwear for when you suddenly found your home filled with macho cops.”
The timeline of the book I read took place over a week. In this week she documented every damn thought she had. Every time she brushed her teeth and every time she took a nap. This got exhausting, tedious, unnecessary, and ridiculous. Especially because she was such a shitty character.
Because every damn move she makes is documented, I know that all she ate in the book was cookie dough and thai food. This chick has got to be hella constipated.
The dialogue devolves into random nonsensical words with little to no punctuation. SERIOUSLY HOW DOES THIS STUFF PASS THROUGH EDITORS? Or even spell check for that matter.
Example? Why not:“I’m good, babe, and I know you like it, I know you like what I can do to you but that isn’t it for you with me and now I know it never was. And for me, you’re you. That meant I needed to engage.”

Anywho, the heroine is a plain "mouse" of a girl. She tells you all about her plainness in her inner monologue. She tells the hero all about it. The other characters tell her all about it.
I don't know. I can't get down with that much self-hate in the first 3 chapters. Probably because I know that it is leading up to the inevitable makeover.

I don't know...Elizabeth Hoyt just doesn't do it for me. I SHOULD like it. This trope usually works for me. I think of Reynaud's Syndrome...must just be the nurse in me coming out) is a scarred (mentally and physically) war veteran and major ass-hat. Our virginal spinster heroine Beatrice is kind and lovely. The ton thinks hero is crazy, therefore to make him seem less crazy, he decides to take a wife. Murder, intrigue, and of course the questioning of earldom ensue.
Why didn't this work for me? The sexual tension seemed lazy and forced. The heroine had the maturity of an 11 year old girl. The ass-hat hero was either too much an asshole for the gentleman he really was, or not enough of an asshole for the gentleman he never was. I can't decide. Either way, it didn't work.
Mad props to Ms Hoyt's steamy love scenes though. Despite the lack of build up, those scenes were SEXY. ...more
