╰┈➤ ”it's the imperfections that make things beautiful.”
well folks that’s not the case with this book because was it imperfect? oh yeah. was it beautiful? i’m going to have to go no on that one
let’s do a little deep dive into the characters real quick…
➳ conrad: my guy is a douche. (see: ‘go to bed like a good girl’) he only exists to be broody and immature. also, i kept hearing from the author that he was so standoffish and kept to himself and he that he was cautious and organized and a million other adjectives. yet his character felt bland and underdeveloped
in fact i couldn’t really get a grasp on any of the characters personalities because they all felt inconsistent and just…weird. is it possible to write your own characters out of character? everything was tell and no show
➳ jeremiah: i honestly didn’t really have any complaints about him. he was mid but chill
➳ taylor: she’s the type of girl that would flirt with your boyfriend and then ask what your problem was. and if you try to give her a compliment she just looks at you like you’re an alien and says ‘um, thanks?’ i get that belly was being a jealous b to her (we’ll get to her in a minute, oh boy do i have things to say) but i also don’t get why people defend taylor.
➳ cam: you did nothing wrong bro and honestly i’m sorry for the way my girl belly treated you
➳ susannah: only good part of this book tbh. her storyline was predictable but it was the only part that kept me interested near the end
➳ which brings us to belly: you know what, honestly i have to give her props because i finally found a protagonist more annoying than bella swan and that’s hard to do. belly is annoying and whiny and conceited and acts like a 6 year old (im sorry to any 6 year olds reading this, you didn’t deserve that) and she thinks that everything revolves around her (conrad, you got that one right—even a broken clock is right twice a day). she treated everyone around her terribly and I honestly don’t get why three guys (and the other random dudes that stare at her cause she’s pretty now) are interested in her
➳ and honorable mentions for steven, belly’s mom, red sox girl, and the elusive dads who i have no feelings towards whatsoever
anyways, now that thats out of the way, some more general thoughts:
• none of the characters felt real and like i said, i could get a grasp on any of them. they all felt like the blandest caricatures you could imagine
• the flashbacks. i honestly don’t know if more of the story was written in present day or in flashbacks. i feel like the author didn’t know. she would call belly 13 and then 14 and then 11 all in the same flashback. like, if you’re confusing yourself in your timeline, what do you think the readers feel?
• you could feel that this was written in 2009
• if belly sticks her tongue out at someone one more time i’m going to throw up all of the koolaid i feel like i vicariously consumed during this book ...more

this was good!! i really enjoyed animal farm and so i really wanted to enjoy this and i ended up liking it
it was a fairly quick read and it was such an interesting world that reminded me a little of fahrenheit 451 and i really appreciated the ending and the symbolism and the way george orwell writes.
overall i’d recommend this and orwell’s other work and this book definitely made me think. it’s such a necessary book and i see why we read it ...more

╰┈➤ ”you must remember, family is often born of blood, but it doesn't depend on blood.”
so, i think this is one of my favorite series out there. it is a lot of fun and very comical at times. the main plot is very action filled and intriguing. it is not necessarily a mystery, but it definitely has some mystery-like elements to it.
the characters are also very well done and i loved following them and their strengths and weaknesses and how they came together and worked as a powerful team. it is just such a well built book and i couldn’t wait to read the next in the series (all of which are just as good, but the way!).
it is very plot based but the characters are also very lifelike for being a middle grade novel. if you liked greenglass house or the book scavenger series i highly recommend this one. if you enjoy action, mystery, cracking codes, and a smart, interesting gang of kids trying to save the world than this is the one for you!!
also, the disney+ adaptation is *chef kiss* ...more

honestly i wasn’t sure about this in the beginning but im going to say a solid 4 stars honestly!!
i don’t know if this type of dystopian is 100% my genre but usually but this was really interesting and it definitely made me think. there were so many good quotes from other works of literature like this—
╰┈➤ “the folly of mistaking a metaphor for a proof, a torrent of verbiage for a spring of capital truths, and oneself as an oracle, is inborn in us” ~ paul valery
we love!! and also so many of this author’s quotes were chef kiss. like i started writing them down halfway through and wow like—
╰┈➤ “a book is a loaded gun."
╰┈➤ “play the man, master ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in england, as i trust shall never be put out."
╰┈➤ “now, sucking all the night into his open mouth and blowing it out pale, with all the blackness left heavily inside himself, he set out in a steady jogging pace.”
╰┈➤ “they have to come round in their own time, wondering what happened and why the world blew up under them.”
╰┈➤ “you must remember, burn them or they'll burn you, he thought. right now it's as simple as that.”
╰┈➤ “…and there, in the wilderness, the men all moved their hands, putting out the fire together”
╰┈➤ “‘stuff your eves with wonder,' he said, 'live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. see the world. it's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories.’“
╰┈➤ “man, when i was younger i shoved my ignorance in people's faces. they beat me with sticks. by the time i was forty my blunt instrument had been honed to a fine cutting point for me. if you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you'll never learn.”
╰┈➤ ”you always said, don’t face the problem, burn it. well, now I’ve done both. goodbye captain.”
╰┈➤ ”he was a thing of brush and liquid eye, of fur and muzzle and hoof, he was a thing of horn and blood that would smell like autumn if you bled it out on the ground.”
╰┈➤ ”’it doesn't matter what you do,’ he said, ‘so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away. the difference between the man who just cuts lawns and a real gardener is in the touching,’ he said. ‘the lawn-cutter might just as well not have been there at all; the gardener will be there lifetime.’"
and yeah i’ll stop now you get the point!! i didn’t particularly care about any of the characters but it was definitely thought provoking and i kept comparing it to vfd (asoue girlies where you at!!)
anyways not mad i read this and even though it wasn’t my absolute favorite i ended up enjoying it a lot and it was probably so important then and definitely so important now!!

i am not sure how i felt about this one compared to the rest of the series. i enjoyed it, but it wasn’t my favorite tbh
coming off the second one which easily could’ve been rounded up to five stars this one was kind of a letdown like it wasn’t bad at all just underwhelming
i wasn’t a huge fan of the ‘eve looks like emily’ plot and that’s basically what this book resolves around and it just felt like a third book wasn’t needed and the end was so predictable
