The book tells about a quiet librarian Ava who had a dramatic event 10 years ago as a college student. Since then she has enjoyed her job at Tate Modern in London and is sure that nothing exited is going to happen in her life. She enjoys her best friend Poppy's stories about romantic adventures but doesn't make an effort to have her own.
But one day meeting Poppy in a Bistro, she encounters a man who cannot take a "No" when Ava refuses to have a drink with him. His insistence frightens Ava and not without a reason. After their meeting strange and dramatic events start in Ava's life.
The book captivates the reader's attention from the first pages and keeps events coming one after another with increasing tension. The end I also very good. Ava is a very likeable and clever character ready to do everything for her best friend Poppy and Ava's sister Judy.
A good book recommended for everyone who likes a good thriller. ...more

Detective Declan Miller is returning to work after a leave following his wife Alex's murder. They both loved dancing and he misses her very much and spends his spare time looking through her mobile and calling it to hear her voice in a voicemail.
On his first day at work, he is paired with a new partner DS Sara Xiu and gets a case of double murder at the Sands Hotel.
Miller has a specific sense of humour and not everyone takes his jokes easy.
The plot has a lot of interesting moments and is a bit sad because of fresh memories about Alex and their happy life together.
Miller is a very likeable character and I hope that the series will be continued....more

Many years later he meets her again in Boston and is dragged into a complicated adventure with a lot of dead bodies.
The book is entertaining and has a lot of twists, but I couldn't believe George's naivety and readiness to help a person with such a dark history of crimes and manipulations.
One of the last scenes is also not believable for me....more

The first half of the book is boring. The main character Cassie Macreddin bought an old house that she wants to renovate and start a B&B. She is still recovering after the death of her husband only one day after he told her that he wants a divorce. Cassie thinks about it every few pages of the book hinting about her implication in his death and how it helped her to start this B&B dream project.
The house is old and needs a lot of renovation. Problems with it are piling one on top of another. Cassie is suspecting everyone around her except, of course, the people who want her out of the house.
Events become tense and more interesting only in the last 20% of the book when events, hard to believe and a bit bizarre, start to unfold.
For me, Cassie was an unlikable and unpractical character.
This is 4th Valerie Keogh's book and three previous ones were better than this one. I have not given up on this author. I hope that the next books will impress me more....more

Local police investigate Adam about a murdered local girl. Ashley falls in love with Adam and believes that feelings are reciprocal. She describes her adventures in a diary.
The book starts with entries from this diary read 30 years later. The mystery is who is reading the diary and what happened 30 years ago.

This is a very unusual book with a lot of information through which you must navigate trying to guess what happened with Zoe. It is enjoyable and makes a good read....more

Aidan and his partner must extract from him the location of the final victim. But the killer is assassinated. Who did it and why? Finally, Martin Wick confesses that he was innocent.
Detective Martin Wick must find the truth about what happened many years ago.
The plot of the book is brilliant and intense especially because Martin Wick is himself a target of a contract killer hired by a psychopath from the past. The whole story from beginning to end is a noir thriller with a heartbreaking end.

Lorraine cannot see her because her two small children are asleep and, as a newly divorced mother, she doesn't have anybody else to stay with them.
In the morning she finds her mum's house empty and all her things are in place, except the mobile. She reports her to the police who don't take this information seriously.
What did Lorraine know about her mother and how many lies were in their lives? Step by step Lorraine is going to uncover the truth about their family.
There is a present storyline from Lorraine and one in the past, telling the story of Lorraine's brother Trevor.
The story is interesting but a bit confusing in some places controversial. It has a lot of repeating information and sometimes on a few pages, the same slightly modified text is written again and again. The author has to do some work to improve the writing style.

In the The Smiling Man Aiden Waits is working night shifts with DI Peter Sutcliffe 'Sutty'. Both partners don't like each other and sometimes they don't talk at all for hours.
One night in a closed hotel they face a crime scene with the body of a "smiling" man without fingertips or other identification details. Who is he and what happened in the hotel?
The book is a not-put-down one with a lot of twists, puzzles and things that are not as they look at the first glance. Parallel to the main investigation, we have the story of Aidan's childhood and its connection with the present.
Highly recommend this book to police procedural or thriller lovers. ...more

Mandy Knox's daughter Callie is missing and a lot of blood is found on her door. What happened with Callie and how Mandy didn't notice what was going Mandy Knox's daughter Callie is missing and a lot of blood is found on her door. What happened with Callie and how Mandy didn't notice what was going on in her life?
Mandy herself is very unhappy. She had to give away her dreams about the future when she got pregnant in high school. She has been waitressing all her life and recently was fired from the job. She had a very abusive relationship with Steve and their marriage is finished already. She had drink problems and Callie was acting more like a parent in their relationship looking after Mandy.
Callie is a talented girl who dreams about a career in Hollywood. Did she run away from the small town? After her disappearance, Mandy finds a lot of things that she didn't know about Callie.
The story is sad and Mandy is a very unlikable character. The main idea of the book is a very important one and, if told better, could give a lot of thought about parenthood and life in a small town. But the book is a bit rushed and a lot of details are not explained properly. The end is suspended and makes the reader wonder what happened.
The book had a good potential that wasn't completely developed....more

Five friends had known each other since they were 11 years old. There are no secrets between them. At least it is supposed to be so. But when tragedies follow one after another one hidden secret will be revealed.
The story is told by Claudia Harper, whose life is a mess. One of her best friends is dead, her marriage is nearly destroyed, and her other friends are avoiding her.
I expected a lot more from this book as it has a high rating. But the beginning is slow, Claudia looks stupid and not like the intelligent woman that she is supposed to be. In some places there are some repetitive moments, in other places, it is not believable at all.
The most that I can give to this book are 3 stars with approximation....more

Rina Kent is a psychiatric doctor who had a traumatic event in her practice and needs help herself, but she continues working in a psychiatric ward taking midnight shifts. One day in the ward, Amy is admitted after an attempted suicide. She is an autistic patient who doesn't speak and is only humming a nursery song. Rina tries to establish contact with Amy who one night whispers a list of four people to Rina. One person is already dead. Are others in danger too?
This is not a bad book, but it is a bit messy and Rina is breaking rule after rule not caring about professional ethics or law. As for the end, it generates more questions than answers.
