— firstly, i’m the most indecisive person ever and i couldn’t settle on a rating for the life of me. i was so excited to read this story, like the gorgeous cover INSTANTLY drew me in and i was so stoked when i got approved for the arc but this book was just so boring and it ended up falling short for me.. i ended up skimming the last 20% bc i just wanted it to be over. i felt no connection between these characters. how was ford pining for rosie for decades but he hasn’t seen her in 10 years.. that’s why it all felt so forced to me, why didn’t he make his move earlier on if he “loved” her so much. he also kept having to repeat that he’s always pined for her ever since they were young. like who was he trying to convince that he’s always loved her, us or himself? bc i wasn’t buying it bc there is absolutely no chemistry between them whatsoever. there was also no angst, tension or buildup + the will they/won’t they was so exhausting, it was going on for way too long and the bickering was kind of immature. ford and rosie are probably the most blandest couple i’ve read about in a while.

➷ charlotte is haunted by the tragedy of her parent’s death and the cruel consequences that left her sister scarred. then there is kellan. he struggles with the aftermath of his mother’s death, that results in him being dumped on his brothers doorstep by his father and forced to live with his brother, who then keeps him from his dad. one valentine’s day, these two teen outcasts end up on the same rooftop with a plan to end their lives — on the verge of ending their lives, they both end up forming a bond and they make a pact to come back every year on this day and check on each other for the next four years — only, kellen breaks his promise on the fourth year leaving charlotte to deal with the consequences and left to wonder what happened. — fast forward four years later and kellan’s death has brought together two broken souls - charlotte and tate. both are ridden with guilt and self loathing, over the death of their loved ones.
— god this book is heartbreaking, but it slowly very slowly puts ur heart back together — the journey of grief in this book was beautifully written.
➷ charlotte and tate were joined together by their grief, but remained together because of love - the push and pull towards each other was executed well. they both work through their grief around kellan and try to come to terms with his death. both of them feel guilt and the responsibility for kellan’s death. i really wish charlotte and kellan got their happy ending tho, they made so much more sense and had a lot more in common compared to charlotte and tate - they felt more trauma bonded and were both leaning on each other bc of the memories they had of kellan. looking back they had nothing in common, i feel like they both needed closure to help them move on from this tragedy. i hated how charlotte would constantly chase after tate and was so clingy towards him. she felt she had to save him and was acting like a perfect fmc when that wasn’t even the case, she was carrying around a lot of guilt and pain and suffering silently. i just found her character to be utterly boring and bland compared to tate - i loved his ice queen persona and his asshole sense of humour. in the end, i feel like tate just wasn’t that into her, it was more of a sexual attraction building up between them.

this book is about 200 pages too long. if you’re going to write a 600 page contemporary romance, at least make it good. for a second chance romance, this book is lacking angst and build up. i expected flashbacks to when they were younger, since that was when all the important stuff happened. show us how cal and lana fell in love with each other, show us why he broke her heart, there was no exact given reason. there were also so many unnecessary plot lines that led to no where. i love cal but this book is not giving what i thought it would give, which is disappointing bc it was my most anticipated read, but everything in this book was just predictable.
— firstly, that town was INSUFFERABLE, they are an actual cult. they are all 30+ but have personalities of a 4 year old. all they done was treat cal badly and excluded him simply bc he left and broke alana’s heart, holding a 6 year grudge while he was struggling w addiction drove me crazy. that town would put him down and throw his addiction in his face CONSTANTLY. i hate how they all treat his addiction as an inconvenience to them, that rubbed me off the wrong way.
— you think being a second chance romance there would be a slight grovelling storyline, but it was giving ✨nothing✨ you would expect lana to make cal suffer before taking him back, but nope, he comes back into her life by swooning his way back in, plays w her kid and she folded like a cheap lawn chair just bc she was horny. she had no backbone, she has the personality of a blank piece of paper and an emotional maturity of a 14 year old. she was childish, preaches abt not falling into the same patterns, but would give cal so many chances, she would always jump to conclusions, find so many excuses to hate him and not trust him and would say the most insensitive shit when she was angry. i had to constantly put down this book and roll my eyes bc she was that unbearable!!
— the rehab aspect was completely brushed over. he goes to rehab for 30 days and he is suddenly cured. i wish we were given a chapter or two of his ups and downs with his time in rehab, not just skip to after the 30 days and his life is suddenly a bliss? his recovery felt too easy, it happens extremely fast even tho majority of the book is him struggling w alcohol use. he should’ve gotten sober earlier on in the book, preferably he should’ve gone to rehab after he broke her mum’s vase. addiction is not a simple topic to write about, so if you’re not going to give it any justice, or don’t do any research before writing heavy themes, SIMPLY DO NOT WRITE ABOUT IT AT ALL
anyways rant over, bc i did enjoy the little moments between cal and cami, they are everything to me. just the way he steps up and is that father figure to her when she has been let down previously warms my heart!! cal and cami ily <33
