The most obvious question open for discussion is probably, Who is the real monster?
What made me continue reading, and also really enjoy the book, was the story of Frankenstein's "monster". Let me explain that a little bit more. This is, for me, the story of a lonely creature doing everything it can to not be lonely anymore ❤️
You wake up confused, look into the scared face of your creator, and hurry out of the building to collect yourself. You just started to exist, and you have no idea what awaits you. You decide to explore, to get to know the world you live in. And no matter how good your intentions may have been, all the humans see is your hideous face and declare you a monster worthy of killing simply because of your appearance. You try again, and the humans shield the children from you, and faint upon seeing you.
"but I had hardly placed my foot within the door, before the children shrieked, and one of the women fainted"
So you flee into the woods. You live of berries. Then you encounter a family in the woods. You decide to learn from them. What they do, how they speak, write, and read. How and why do they feel the way they do?
"If such lovely creatures were miserable, it was less strange that I, an imperfect and solitary being, should be wretched"
So you spent months (!) hiding and learning, because all you want is for people not to run away. For people not to want to kill you when seeing you. All you want is ONE friend.
"I imagined that they would be disgusted, until, by my gentle demeanour and conciliating words, I should first win their favour, and afterwards their love"
But again, the first encounter, and after months of studying them, doing everything you can to set them in a good mood, is the same. You have to flee.
"Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust? God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance."
"I am fearless, and therefore powerful."
All that is left for you to do after being denied a companion made like yourself, is to make your creator your enemy. Even, if that means being hunted to the end of the world. ...more

"What was it like? What does it feel like when you're drowning?"
I was frustrated, disappointed, angry, confused and so, so utterly sad and heartbroken that I did not even feel the rage anymore. This thriller made me question the description of the book as a thriller. It did not feel like a thriller for the majority of the book for me. Just an imperfect family with mistakes, problems, missteps and whatnot, but what family is perfect? And while I was still grabbing for the puzzle pieces and struggling to see the full picture, I realized. I realized, and all the seemingly unnecessary details snapped together, and I saw the whole picture. ...more

I would not call this book "A Love story" per se, but rather a "Fight story" of a young woman yearning to learn about anatomy in a world created entirely by and for men.
This book has it all: heartbreaking family background, supporting friendship and love, but also characters and plots that will make your hair stand on end and leave you reading with disgust and utter disbelief.
I would recommend it to anyone looking for a darker "romance" novel in which the strong Hazel fights for her right to become her true self while uncovering dark and revolting secrets.
