The technology used in the story did have some mystical qualities, with no explanations as to how it worked, and maybe that was intentional; to put the reader into the mindset of one of the main characters, who is seeing all this for the first time. The character Lisa Snow was relatable, having everyday problems, and her reactions to the fantastical things in the story felt sincere. The writing style is choppy, and so too, is the dialog. Although not my preference, it was written in a way that made everything feel punchy and to the point—emphasizing keywords to the reader. The plot sets up the two main characters, building a bond between them, but leaves the reader with many unanswered questions, yet leaves room for more books.
This book epitomizes, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." ~ Arthur C. Clarke The book made it clear there is an advanced technology, then more advanced, and lastly, a god tier level. It gives me a real 'one-upper' vibe to the storytelling. Not to steal from video games, but a type of power creep that foreshadows where the story will most likely go.
Although this was not my cup of tea, the book is short enough to read through quickly and get a few chuckles with how the characters interact with each other. If you like superhero stories, multiverse, and damsels, this book is right up your alley....more
