No, not much at all, but basketball is only used here as a framework to talk about…everything else. Hanif’s writing had me weeping about how Lebron’s hairline is marking the passage of time toward our own collective mortality. Part essay, part poetry, powerful cultural commentary. No one loves Ohio more than Hanif loves Ohio. This was absolutely incredible and a must listen on audio. ...more

Just didn’t connect with me, but was a quick listen. ...more

I loved this audiobook and all the feelings it made me feel. I laughed out loud, felt nostalgia for my youth, and cried alongside Kate as she describes the growing pains of being a mid-thirties millennial. I can see why some people are criticizing this being more of a memoir than they were expecting, but I related so much to it that it didn't bother me at all. ...more

But this is also a platform I have been using since 2008, 5 years before it was purchased by Amazon, when I was a bookseller at a retailer also trying to compete with Amazon. I should really make the jump to Storygraph (and perhaps I will in 2024). ANYWAY, because of my bookselling past, I knew a lot about how Amazon undermines and undercuts the publishing and bookselling industries, but this book expanded that and forced me to examine other aspects of Amazon that I hadn’t thought of (I’ve never owned a Ring camera and never will now). The original promise of utilizing Amazon was that it was cheaper than anywhere else and more convenient than shopping anywhere else, but the cost of Prime continues to rise and the benefits continue to be stripped (2-day shipping no longer guaranteed, ads being added to their streaming content, membership cost rising every year, etc.). I will continue to re-evaluate my purchasing activity with Amazon and look for alternatives where I can....more

I don't know where I even heard about this book, but at the halfway point, it was clear it's not for me. The main argument in this seems to be that people choose all of their emotions, that trauma isn't real, that at any point, regardless of your circumstances, you can change. And the way it was written as a conversation between "teacher" and "student" was so cheesy read aloud in audiobook form (some of it could have been lost in translation, but I couldn't take it). ...more

It got pretty dark at times and the absolute feminine rage I felt when she talked about being hounded by paparazzi with her babies and then being labeled a bad mother and having them taken from her had me shaking. Do I think she sat down and wrote this all herself? Not a chance. However, do I believe every word of it is true? Yes. ...more

The premise of this being a collection of essays exploring the tacky and nostalgic pop culture treasures I love was so appealing, but really this was more of a memoir that lightly touched on how tacky shows, games, music, etc. impacted the author.
