Homa is a young girl who knows she willfight for her country as an indefatigable Iranian women's rights activist. Eleyah is her best friend.
The girls come from different backgrounds and stations in life yet their bonds of friendship take them through a childhood full of joy, the wondrous years of been teens and young women, a betrayal and several tragedies, and a journey that spans the worlds. All along, Homa never stops fighting for Iranian women to be free.
Hope, heartbreak, despair, fear, and tired of being controlled, they want to decide for themselves who they are supposed to be instead of being told what to wear, how to act, and being forced to give up on dreams simply for being women. I hope you enjoyed this story as much as I did! It's a wonderful journey of friendship set across a backdrop of cultural revolution in Iran.

She sounds like she is a gem of a friend and has a larger than life personality. I loved how she took us through Ottawa gay bars during the 90s - my fave. No better place to have fun than at the places mentioned in this book.
Had to laugh at her comments about Elgin being Straight Meat Street because it was. While Elaina was working at Icon and CP, I was working at Nescalero's. She described that area perfectly. Lots of memorable characters too.
IG Review:
I'm a lucky woman to have received three signed author copies of books for Christmas. One of these was the second book in Elaina Martin's Dyke series!
Dyke II: The Decadent 90s A Memoir
Elaina is a Canadian author from Sudbury, Ontario. My friend Sarah sent me both her books and let me tell you, this woman's personality shines through in every word she has written about her life. I can imagine that she draws people to her like moths to a flame - just one of those personalities you like right away!
As a fellow musician and a resident of Ottawa who also has the same memories of Ottawa's rich and vibrant music scene in the 90s, I can attest that Elaina's descriptions brought me back to a place and time in my life that were so much fun. Those were the days!
I spent a lot of time at the places she mentions in this book, and well, I know Sudbury too. Ha ha. (Family cottage in North Bay. Lots of track meets in Sudbury.)
Elaina worked at CP and Icon. And I worked on Elgin at Nescalero's. (Unfortunately.) I also learned we were neighbors. (I lived at Gladstone for a while, then moved to the Glebe before saying bye-bye to Ottawa and moving around the world.)
Anyways, protect this woman and author at all costs. She's a Canadian treasure! I will be sure to show you her books and her autographs in another post. ...more

Pamela Anderson is known as a sex icon to the world and an animal rights activist next, but like every human on Earth there is far more to her than anyone knows. Her documentary was great, but this book is the true Pamela.
Smart, caring, passionate, a voracious reader; a poet, and a talented writer are just a few of the things we learn about this incredible Canadian woman. I'm so happy for her. I'm glad she got to tell her story. I'm ecstatic she did it so well and with such openness and honesty. Loved it!
Some favorite quotes:
"Reading is my only true friend. And nature. I’m always curious and want to know what nature is trying to teach me. Everything is a clue or a sign." ~ Pamela Anderson, Love, Pamela
In my travels, I’ve met with world leaders and spoken on issues far and wide with promising results. I’ve found it’s most important to be thoughtful and intentional with your actions. That means advocating with respect, instead of being the typical Westerner who always wants to impose their annoying points of view and not- always-shared opinions on others. ~ Pamela Anderson, Love, Pamela ...more

McGowan's story growing up in a cult and then entering the cult of Hollywood is sad, but as we all know there is strength to be found and healing in telling your story. I hope she has found some. But I am sorry to say I did not like how this book was written. It was choppy and the format was distracting. I can see now that it is a great choice as an audio book because it reads like an audio book with half completed sentences that we'd use in narration, but if you're reading the text, it just doesn't work. Those half formed sentences drove me batty, but they wouldn't be noticeable if I had listened to it.
I loved that she took us through her childhood and revealed that she has always been a fighter. I can see that this book was likely a form of healing for her too. I'm thrilled for her success. I'm thrilled she had a chance to tell her story. I liked that pieces of her show through in the characters that she plays.
I strongly recommend the audio version if you're going to try this book!...more
