Som alltid med antikens Rom kan jag inte få nog av det poetiska och det vackra, men blir äcklad och onödigt uppskrämd av det perversa och vidskepliga. Just den här skildringen har en stark närvaro med markörer som pelargångar, fikon, skuggiga marmorbänkar, villor med atrium och impluvium och det vi lärde oss på latinkurserna, skrivtavlor med stylus och - what have the Romans ever done for us - BRÖD och VIN.
Trots detta får jag nog vända mig annorstädes, eller tillbaka till Maggan*, för att finna mitt litterära tusculum.

Rätt så meta också, är Millers version, inklusive blinkningar till hennes egen berättelse om Achilles och samma vackra bildspråk. Olivlundar, ost och vin är ju också trevligt.
Under läsningen blir jag hela tiden påmind om en miniserie från 90-talet, inte med den största budgeten, men kul skådespelare och trogen originalversionen, om en sådan nu existerar. T.ex. Hermes har exakt samma lekfulla stil i boken, MM har förmodligen sett samma:

Om en litterär kanon någon gång ska införas är det här ett självklart verk. Utöver att ge oss insikter om romartiden har Marcus Aurelius saker att säga om t.ex. sociala medier, inredning! Även mindfulness och carpe diem innan begreppen blev toxiska. Det vill säga hans tankar är så allmänmänskliga och tidlösa att de återfinns i all självhjälp, även professionell KBT och PDT, både från Freuds tid och hos oss år 2023. Mycket handlar förstås om förgänglighet, vita brevis/memento mori-style, och det kan förvisso ha motsatt effekt genom att framkalla ångest, men här är några belysande exempel: "Kom ihåg att vad som drar dig hit och dit liksom med osynliga trådar gömmer sig i ditt eget inre [...]"
