I asked for this book for Christmas because I saw it in a true crime recommendations video and it was highly praised so why not? I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about Perry Smith and Dick Hickcock or the crime itself or even Truman Capote.
Capote sure can write - that's what I feel like I appreciated the most about this book. This is the kind of non-fiction book I hardly believed was 100% non-fiction because it went sooooo deep into the crime and what happened.
You don't have to be a true crime fan to read or like this book, I went into this knowing nothing and I was hooked after a couple of chapters....more

This book was set in Moscow and precisely inside The Metropol hotel. We saw some glimpses of what was happening outside the hotel's doors but we always came back to it. I felt somehow attached to Count Rostov, we spent a lot of time together.
I'm not certain this book needed to be 460ish pages, though. Some historical facts felt unnecessary. It could be that my edition was just huge so it felt way longer that it really was. And, even if I was totally into the story while I was reading, I wasn't exactly eager to pick the book back up whenever I put it down....more

This is probably one of the weirdest books I've ever read. In a positive way.
The basic premise is that, one random night, the gods Hermes and Apollo are drinking in a pub in Montreal and they start to discuss what would happen if animals had the possibility to think like humans and to have their intelligence. This leads to them giving human thoughts to 15 dogs that were staying overnight in a shelter. These dogs then form a pack and start living their new and complicated life. The plot kind of reminded me of Animal Farm, but only because we're following talking animals.
I absolutely loved the writing style; I think it fitted the book perfectly. It was crude when it needed to be crude and deep when it needed to be deep. Loved, loved looooved the writing. The book was short and the plot was compelling. Meaning: I devoured it even if I was sick as fuck.
I felt like the message went a little bit over my head and I was slightly annoyed by the fact that, after a while, the gods continued to interfere with the dogs' lives. I wished they would just leave them alone.
Overall, this was a really interesting and unique book. I liked it a lot! ...more

I really liked the writing style and the structure of this novel, but preferred Nao's chapters way more than Ruth's. The way Nao referred to the reader of her diary actually made me want to journal more, and I really, really liked when she was talking about her great-grandmother. I admit that I teared up a bit at a certain paragraph and I could totally see the potential of Ruth Ozeki's writing, but nothing stuck with me after the end.
The ending was what ruined it a bit for me; it was way too scientific and I honestly didn't even fully understand where the author was trying to go with that. This was the typical case in which I really enjoyed the novel while I was reading it, but immediately forgot about it as soon as I put it down and finished it.
I'm seeing very different reviews: some loved it, some others had a similar experience to mine - this is why I'd recommend it. This novel had so much to offer. ...more

Not all the books I've read so far in my life are worth considering "important books". Maybe they're important to me, for some sentimental reason, but they don't have an important message attached to them. This was the kind of book I consider important in all ways, because it explored our society and some aspects of it that are really worth discussing more. The Female of The Species dealt with rape culture and sexism; it is one of the few YA books that does it incredibly well. Not only that, but the characters learnt so much during the entire story.
We follow three main characters: Alex, the feminist version of Dexter Morgan; Peekay, the preacher’s kid that actually likes to drink and have fun with boys; Jack, who looked like a fuckboy in the beginning. If we talk about characters, Alex was definitely my favorite. She was the one I was rooting for even if she was a killer. This book didn't justify killing, in any way or form. It was just how one of the main characters dealt with the loss of her sister and all of the other acts of injustice and sexism she saw. She actually did try to act "normal". Because I liked Alex so much, I didn't like the ending. Even if I didn't like it, though, it made sense.
I wished the author took more time to develop the rest of the characters and the plot: some parts felt just a bit too dramatic but the main message was always clear and present, and I really liked this aspect. The writing was another thing I really, really enjoyed.
I would totally recommend this book, please read it....more

I loved The Kind Worth Killing and I was really happy when I got approved for this book. Sadly, I was disappointed. Her Every Fear fell into the category of books that I'll not remember in a couple of months, because it was so uninspired and... sloppy. The overall feeling I had was that the author was trying to re-create the elements that made The Kind Worth Killing so good, and the result was a sad and bad version of it. I don't know exactly what happened but everything felt awkward and unoriginal. The characters moved around the plot in a weird way, definitely not something I was expecting from this author.
If I had to use one word to describe this book, I'd go for uninspired....more

I'll probably remember some details: why it's called Harmless Like You, the art, the bald cat. But that's it. I didn't see any of the "startlingly beautiful prose" but I agree that there was a lot of potential.
I'm interested in reading more from this author whenever she comes out with something new. ...more

I don't really want to tag all the spoilers so I decided to hide the entire review. Last warning for spoilers!
A few things I want to discuss:
❖ I ended up really enjoying Alina. I had a good feeling about her from book one and I'm glad that she continued to be real and flawed but still awesome.
❖ Yay, there's a queer relationship in this book.
❖ For the entire book I was scared for the cat. 100% honest right now.
❖ The big thing that ruined the ending for me was Mal. I wasn't a fan of him from Shadow & Bone and even if he loved Alina from the beginning I still couldn't bring myself to like him. I'M SORRY, I JUST CAN'T. Obviously Alina couldn't have a relationship with the Darkling because, even if he's a puppy and I was the Darkling trash for half of this series, he's also pretty fucking insane and mean. And cute, but mean as fuck. I don't understand why Mal had to live (or even die, since the whole third amplifier bullshit didn't make that much sense for me - and it didn't because I DON'T LIKE MAL AND I DON'T WANT TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIM). I also don't understand why Leigh Bardugo decided to write Nikolai's character like that and/or not give him a chance with Alina. I was actually shipping them for half of Seige & Storm and this book.
So, yeah. I guess I'm done with this series! It was fun and angsty and pretty much a roller coaster of emotions and plot twists....more

New adult romance isn't my genre, at all. I tried many different books and 90% of the times I had awful experiences. When I was offered this book for review I said yes because I'm still searching for the perfect NA book, the one that I don't hate with all my heart.
I normally don't compare authors but Fran Seen had the same level of sassiness of Sara Wolf, and I hope she takes this as the compliment I intended it to be because I loved Love Me Never. And I loved this book too, the writing style was the first thing I noticed and adored.
I will start with the only negative thing: the relationship between Alo and Lula developed a little bit too fast. It wasn't a insta-love type of situation but close to that, and I could see that it ruined the book a little bit. I was expecting to see at first a professional relationship, between an employer and employee, and then something more. But the lines were blurred from the start and I didn't see any professionalism. This doesn't mean that I didn't care for the romance though, because I cared a lot.
I liked how the author integrated PTSD and that we actually could hear from the point of view of an Arab war veteran. I liked that Fran Seen didn't use the "love can cure everything" trope, because it's highly unrealistic that love can cure something like panic attacks and depression. A lot of the themes in this book were really up-to-date with the things we hear right now in the news - I liked that she decided to integrate those themes, as well as mental illness. I also really liked Lula as a female main character and how she dealt with her own family and their problems.
I would recommend this book to fans of NA or just people that want to try the genre and don't know where to start....more

This is the kind of book that's pretty difficult to review because you don't want to give away too much because it would ruin everything.
Nothing was wrong with this novel, I just guessed the big reveal/who-did-it pretty early on so I kind of ruined the experience for myself a little bit. I discussed this book with a friend of mine and she told me she had had the same "problem", so maybe the mystery wasn't so mysterious?
As for the rest, the book was extremely well written. Gillian Flynn is really good at making you want to read about horrible and fucked up people, I noticed it when I read Gone Girl as well.
So, maybe Dark Places isn't my favorite book by this author but it was still an exceptional book....more
