While bad things happen, because that's just what life is like, and Sade has had an especially tough life so far, it felt so hopeful overall. It's a much more quiet book than Raybearer and Redemptor, with a smaller scope, but that doesn't make it less important. It's a story of self-worth and of learning how you can impact your own life and even the world around you, even if you think you're just one small person. Jordan Ifueko's writing was once again gorgeous. I think the comp to Howl's Moving Castle really holds up, but in a way that really fits the world of Raybearer....more

To me, it was the ultimate feelgood read and I genuinely enjoyed it, but I could have done with a little more plot. I don't think this book will really stick with me, but it did what I wanted it to do, which is help me relax after a tiring day. I'm looking forward to reading the Christmas book in December!...more

I'm not a huge reality tv person, but I'm a sucker for romance novels with a reality tv setting, no idea why. And this was exactly as fun as I was hoping it would be. It's honestly the perfect summer read.
I do have two small criticisms: 1. It could have been gayer. It would have been so nice to have more queer side characters, or to have the existing queer side characters fleshed out a little more. 2. The side characters could have been fleshed out more. Most of their interactions with Cass were kind of glossed over, quickly told but not often shown. I get that the focus was on Cass and Ada, and I loved that, but I would have loved to experience Cass's friendships more rather than just be told about them....more

Within the first two chapters I immediately knew this would be a new favourite. I've been craving an urban fantasy like this so much, and this very much delivered. It's absolutely hilarious, the writing is SO fun, and I loved the morally grey characters. And then the further in you get, the better the romance becomes, until the epilogue just absolutely blows you away....more

This was a really great read, and I had a really hard time putting it down, even though general fiction usually takes me some time to read. Starting this, I was immediately charmed by the fresh, funny but heartfelt writing style. Aisha is a hilarious, relatable, loveable main character. There's the exact right amounts of chaos and heart, of coming of age and romance, to keep things balanced and interesting. I could easily picture this as a romcom movie, or a Netflix show....more

The paranormal element could have been so eerie and creepy, but it didn't really make me feel anything. I did like the characters, though!...more

I went into this without reading the synopsis, just happy to have a new Maureen Johnson mystery, and my first surprise was that this is sapphic, YAY! I became quickly immersed in the story and felt completely hooked after about 100 pages.
This felt pretty similar to Truly Devious in setting and atmosphere, which I can only be happy about. There's a creepy house, a historical mystery that's never been solved, and we get flashbacks. If you loved Truly Devious, you'll be sure to enjoy this too! But it also felt like enough of its own book, because the main character is very different from Stevie, and it's an interesting mystery on its own....more
