I bumped it up to 4 stars since I really enjoyed this new addition to the Maggie Hope series set in England during WWII. This one was more about a serial killer on the loose then about espionage and the ending left me looking forward to the next one in the series. No spoilers but there is a new secondary character that I became very fond of. This isn't great literature but I'm hooked on Maggie Hope and her adventures. ...more

I enjoyed reading this as it was more realistic then most Regency Romances. The 2 main characters are both suffering from emotional/physical pain. Robert Dennington the Marquess of Westfield had his heart broken as a young man. Helena Banbury is a young women who suffered physical and emotion abuse as a young child. She is the illegitimate child of a Duke and lives and works with her "brothers" in the "Hell and Sin" gaming establishment. Through a series of events she is sent to live with her father, the Duke, and sees what life is like "on the other side". Of course the meeting and romance between Robert/Helena goes through some misunderstandings. I really liked Helena. Her character was well written and also the strongest character in the book. For some reason I didn't connect with Robert's character but that didn't spoil my enjoyment in reading this. I'm looking forward to the next in the series as Helena's brother, Ryker, will be featured and he is a very interesting and mysterious character. ...more

edited to add review: This is #5 in the Silver Rush historical mystery series and it did not disappoint! What a colorful cast of characters in 1880 Leadville, Colorado. And an engaging mystery also. Inez is a one of a kind heroine who is torn between her romance with Rev Sands and her husband who deserted her and their son over a year ago. I won't give away any spoilers with the mystery other then to say that it looks like there will be another book in this series in the future. Yeah! Although this can be read as a stand alone, I would recommend starting with #1 "Silver Lies". ...more

After the ending of #3 I had no clue as to how the series would continue although I clicked on a title in error and read a plot spoiler. Well I'm very much enjoying the direction the author is taking Sebastian and the secondary characters and how the mysteries are tied to historical events in Regency England. Ms. Harris is slowly fleshing out the characters and their personalities. And as usual by the end of this one I was again hooked and am again anxiously awaiting #5 on the library wait list.

Rowling, as hit all of the perfect notes in constructing a thrilling suspense novel with complex characters. I've become very attached to Cormoran Strike and Robin. And I'm hoping that a new character who is introduced in this episode will be in the next book in the series. Not going to recap the story line as there would be too many spoilers. Even though each book reads as a stand alone, in my opinion it's best to read the books in order for the character development....more

It was written in 1949 the year I was born and was awarded the first International Fantasy Award. Imagine that most of Earth's population has been wiped out by an unknown virus. The main character, Isherwood "Ish" Williams, is one of the survivors and his emotional and physical journey is full of hope for himself a small group of men and women.
It took me a short while to get used to the author's style of writing and the voice that he gave to Ish. There isn't much action in this novel but I was completely immersed in the story. Not only are we witness to how humanity reacts to this tragic event but we also see how Earth is changed with so few humans left. I had a feeling of almost claustrophobia during parts of the story. This definitely gave me much to think about in relation to our world today....more

The novel takes place in 1940's rural Wisconsin and is told from the POV of Earl "Earwig" Gunderman who is 16 at the beginning of the story. The author has given this young man such a unique "voice". Earl is mentally slow because of a high fever he had as a young child. His older brother, Jimmy, is sent off to the Pacific during WWII. So we the reader experience the events of the War and how it changes Earl, his family and neighbors through Earl's perspective. This was such a heartbreaking, emotional novel although it does have it's humorous moments. Earl is such a special young man and he stole his way into my heart. Just a warning for those who would be offended: there is a LOT of swearing and potty language but I felt it was realistic for the characters....more

First there is no happy ending;I went into this YA novel with the impression that it would be a cute and romantic story with probably a happy ending. First there is no happy ending; in fact the ending gutted me emotionally but it was realistic. The main character, Sutter, is a senior in high school who is on the downward path to becoming an alcoholic. The story is told completely from his POV which for the most part works. The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I felt that it would have helped to hear the POV's of some of the other characters. Even though Sutter sees himself as the life of the party it is obvious that he is out of touch with reality due to his drinking problem. One night after a night of heavy drinking he ends up on a front lawn with no idea what happened the night before or where his car is. This is where the character of Aimee is introduced into the story. She's very smart and definitely not Sutter's type but he becomes intrigued with her and they start an unconventional relationship. I won't post anymore of the story in this review so as not to reveal spoilers. Highly recommended as long as you go into the story knowing that it will be an emotional read....more
