It follows Hazel who is sent to an asylum by her family and forced to comply with an institution that is both flawed and cruel. Despite these challenges Hazel forms friendships with other women which are a silver lining in an otherwise very dark place.
Cécile doesn’t shy away from exploring the confronting historical reality that women went through in asylums, yet writes in an incredibly beautiful and haunting way. It feels very fairytale like.

The Bog Wife is a strange yet compelling tale of the Haddesley family who share an intimate relationship with the bog which sustains them in more ways than one. The bog provides and in exchange they must provide a worthy sacrifice.
The family carries out a tradition of bizarre rituals with the bog, designed to ensure the continuation of the family’s lineage. This is a haunting yet beautiful written story of family secrets, sacrifices and relationships. The character development is superb and the writing exquisite, treading the line between fantasy and horror. I will be thinking about this one for a long time to come.

Grove Hollow oozes with small town charm and Autumn atmosphere. It was such a beautiful coming of age tale of friendship and unexpected romance set in the 1980s which gave it a fun edge! Who would have thought a friendship with a ghost could be so darn cute.
I fell in love with all of the characters and their stories. Even the side characters felt well fleshed out and important.

The Black Feathers is drenched in gothic eeriness and has such a pervasive sense of dread that steadily creeps up. We are introduced to the estate of Guardbridge and immediately it becomes evident that family secrets abound and things are not as they first seem. Guardbridge is the perfect setting for the creepy tale to take place and added such a sense of spookiness.
I couldn’t put this down until the end and pretty much binged it in a day. The twist at the end is perfection!
I feel this will give some readers a similar feeling to that of Rebecca so if you enjoyed that incredible modern classic I highly recommend you pick up the Black Feathers.

I trust in and love Tim McGregor’s writing so I was very excited to pick up this reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Eynhallow is a wonderful I trust in and love Tim McGregor’s writing so I was very excited to pick up this reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Eynhallow is a wonderful example of paying homage to a classic whilst reimagining the story from a fresh lens. This is a case of Frankenstein’s story being told from a different POV.
The tiny island of Eynhallow set an eerie scene for the various creepy happenings that were to unfold. I found myself eagerly turning the pages to see how it would tie into the original Frankenstein. The overall atmosphere felt very bleak and unsettling.
I felt McGregor executed the historical aspect very well. It stayed true to the time in history whilst also making it feel accessible for those who may not normally pick up classics. Readers will be drawn in by the atmosphere and fascinating characters, particularly Agnes.
You do not have to read Frankenstein before delving into Eynhallow but I do feel it enriches the experience and adds further context.

This is best enjoyed after reading the first novella because there are relevant parts of the back story which will help you to understand this one.
As can be expected within any Kingfisher novel; a pervasive atmosphere of unsettling dread runs through. Kingfisher knows how to create a creepy story and this is no exception. I never fail to be impressed by how Kingfisher can do this in such a short amount of pages.
