I adore Keera--she's a strong, compelling character I know I'm going to want to return to again and again. I also loved the chess metaphor throughout. Keera's relationship to her father is complex, and I enjoyed navigating it with her. Fans of legal thrillers will love this.

This book is filled with fun elements and quirky characters, all revolving around a clever locked-room style mystery with multiple 'impossibilities.' I loved how the mystery surrounding Tempest's mother was woven into the current crime, and having grandpa be the primary suspect raised the stakes deliciously--because who's gonna cook all that awesome food if he's not around?! This is a great, addictive series that I hope continues on for many books.

As he rWhen Ben Russo catches Dwayne in the act of robbing his home and chases him down the street, Dwayne pulls a gun on him and threatens his life. As he realizes he's going to be caught, he ditches the gun--if he's caught with it, that's evidence of a more serious offense that will send him to jail for many, many years. From inside jail, Dwayne sends his girlfriend to find the gun before the police do. However, it's gone by the time she and the police get to it. One Gun is the story of what happens to that gun, and to all the people who end up looking for it.
From a crime-fiction perspective, this is an unconventional entry--and I love it all the more for that. Hansen is immensely skilled at weaving together the story of several different groups of people in the same community, and telling the stories of their hopes, dreams, problems and histories through the search for this gun. She's masterful at representing people from across social strata, and her characters leap off the page.
One Gun is one of the most interesting and unique books I've read in quite a while. Highly recommend. ...more

Beautifully written and well-paced, I loved both the concept and the execution of having a therapist's perspective in the investigation of a murder--especially when that therapist can't help but wonder if she's partially to blame for the officer's supposed suicide. Kirschman is skilled at upping the stakes until you feel your own heart being squeezed in your chest, and at weaving together an intriguing and (sadly) plausible mystery. Highly recommend. ...more

The title character is interesting, likeable, and just that dash of crazy required for an amateur sleuth to do the things they need to do to make a book fun. Augusta is like if you took a big cup of Kinsey Millhone and added a dash of Stephanie Plum--she's doggedly committed to finding her missing neighbors and has no issue telling a few lies if it'll get her the information she needs, even if her attempts to pull off of some of those maneuvers are less than subtly executed. A charming mystery, and I look forward to spending time with Augusta again in the future. ...more

Regan's writing style is crisp, expressive, and emotional. I absolutely love the series and this addition to it in particular.

The author explores different points of view, taking you through the murders primarily through the perspective of a young boy (Raymond, who narrowly avoided being killed the day of the massacre because of his friendship with the killer), the killer's mother, and to a degree, the killer himself. Far more than any account I've read of a spree/rampage/mass murder, this book delves into the 'why' of it all in an important way--meaning, a way that actually gives insight into the factors that led Howard Unruh to commit the murders, and how we could potentially protect against them in the future. Obviously murder is wrong, and what Unruh did was not acceptable--yet, the author manages to present him in a way that the reader can empathize with the trauma and injustices he suffered (if not the action he took to rectify them). I believe it takes a skilled writer and insightful human being to walk that line effectively. Highly recommend to any true-crime fan....more
