This review will be full of spoilers, so if you haven't read As Good As Dead and plan to do so, don't read on. . . . I am in shock at how Holly Jackson managed to ruin this book for me with one simple twist. Although "simple" is not quite the right word, considering that said twist is murder.
I absolutely LOVED this series! I loved everything about it, but I especially loved Pip - how smart she is, how determined, just everything about her. At first, my heart ached for her as she felt the need to take sleeping pills, even after her doctor took her off them. In the aftermath of the events in book 2, she suffered from PTSD and couldn't sleep anymore. She also kept seeing blood on her hands, so she didn't see a better way out.
For more than half of the book, I could not put it down - it was that good. But then something happened. Besides the main storyline, Pip gets contacted by a woman who introduces her to another case that she then takes up on. It's about a guy confessing to crimes he didn't commit, because he was coerced into false confession by the police. It was the infamous case of a serial killer who murdered 5 women some years ago. As Pip takes matters into her own hands and investigates, she starts connecting that case with her own - the stalker who's been leaving dead pigeons in front of her house and who paints headless chalk stick figures in the driveway.
Long story short, Pip finds out the identity of the actual murderer, when he manages to abduct her and plans to make her his sixth victim. She thinks she's as good as dead, but as fate would have it, she manages to escape.
Here's where my issues begin: she flees through the woods, she's FREE. But then she turns around when she hears the killer return and decides to go back TO KILL HIM. Not just "normal killing", she hits him in the head. From behind. NINE TIMES. With a hammer!! ...more

That's mainly because I believe it's such bullshit and I could never see enemies to lovers happen in real life. Whyyyyy do so many women want to first hate a guy and then fall in love with him? Or why can't they simply admit from the start that they actually like the dude? How does it make you feel better to first hate, THEN love? It's just plain stupid if you ask me, and that's the case in this book as well.
I wanted to read this because of the Spanish element of the story and thought "come on, don't judge it too harshly from the start". Well, I didn't at first, but as I read on I started hating it and judging it more and more ...more

This book is probably for you if: - you enjoy YA fantasy (I don't any more, but I still find myself reading some every now and then) - have read and enjoyed other works from either Amie Kaufman or Megan Spooner (I have, and I loved the Starbound series, that's why I even considered picking this up)
It wasn't for me, though. I listened to the audiobook and it just didn't manage to hold my attention. My mind kept wandering A LOT and the thing I remember most is the fact that I didn't like either of the MCs ...more

This month I decided I would only read Christmas themed books and so far I did well, but after this one right here I am officially done. It's not that it was bad per se, but it wasn't great either. Full of clichés, silly and immature characters and surprisingly, not christmasy enough.
There are three different stories in The Reindeer Falls Collection and each focuses on one Winter sister. The first story was the one that convinced me to pick it up, because part of it takes place in the city I currently live in (Nuremberg, Germany). On one hand, it was really nice to read about places I've known my whole life and places I see almost every day. But on the other hand, there was some weird stuff happening, like for example there's a scene where the MC, Holly Winter, gets fingered on a church balcony, by none other than her boss ...more

That's my impression of this book.
To those who have read this or those who are maybe planning to, let me tell you: this is a sucky retelling of actual history from my homeland of Romania. History I learned in school and thought to be fascinating. And Kiersten White butchered it with her gender swapping of Vlad the Impaler and the boring plot (I might be biased here, but Romania truly has a rich and interesting history that goes back over 2000 years).
As I do not have a lot of time at the moment, I will have to say full RTC, because I want to take my time to properly dissect this mofo ...more

Honestly, I expected to love this book, assuming it was going to be an epic masterpiece (based on all the 5-star reviews), but sadly, I really didn't.
Daisy Jones and The Six is written in a documentary/interview style and that's something I usually enjoy very much. But in this case, the format took a little getting used to because it's basically pieced together excerpts from interviews. There were too many characters (more than 10, I think) and their lines were too short. Instead of having larger portions of the story told by alternating characters, it's like a bunch of people finishing each other's sentences and that felt weird too me. At some point I could barely keep up with who was talking and eventually I ended up not even caring - I just powered through, hoping for it to get better. Spoiler alert: it didn't.
One of my biggest problems was with Daisy - I really didn't like her. AT ALL. I think we're supposed to see her as this "strong female lead", but to me she just came off as a whiny, spoiled brat, used to getting away with anything because she's beautiful. I also found myself repeatedly annoyed with her constant use of drugs - she was never sober and had nothing interesting about her.
Long story short, this is the tale of a fictional band's journey to fame and it mainly deals with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll in the 70’s. It's not a terrible book, but I felt it was rather underwhelming....more

I'm glad to be able to cross another hyped series off my to-read list, but this was bad.
Overall, I did not connect with any of the characters, I did not like the plot, the romance had no grounds and there was zero chemistry between Nora and Patch. And the worst thing - the whole damn series seems to have been written by a very young, teenage girl. I was so annoyed by this throughout all four books!!!
I will properly review this later. Maybe, idk. [image] ...more
I wanted to like this book, I swear I did. The premise is cute and I had high hopes after reading a positive a review on here recently. T***2 stars***
I wanted to like this book, I swear I did. The premise is cute and I had high hopes after reading a positive a review on here recently. The Worst Best Man seemed to have potential, but in the end it didn't work for me.
The story follows Lina, a wedding planner who had the misfortune of being left at the altar. She got the news that the wedding won't happen from her fiance's brother, Max, and he kind of is to blame for the whole thing. Or so Lina thinks. But she moves on, and come present day, she's offered a great new job opportunity that could be amazing for her career. The downside to the job - she's forced to work with no other than the worst best man ever, Max himself.
This is the classic "enemies to lovers" trope (one that I'm not the biggest fan of to start with), but it doesn't even do that well. It lacks the tension and drama needed for a good enemies to lovers story. Lina and Max seem to get over their grievances waaaaay too quickly, without much communication. They only seemed to be attracted to each other physically, because there's no real chemistry besides that.
A major issue I had with this book were the sex scenes. They were just so.... cringy. This is how my face looked every time they were at it: [image]
If you ask me, they talked too much before and during. The pillow talk felt forced and more like a script from bad porn. I just didn't feel any chemistry between them.
On another note, I would have loved to read more about the wedding planner stuff, more about the job they were working, see them connect more. I also would have loved a better developed scene where they addressed the fact that they were nearly in-laws and how weird it could be for them to end up together.
I don't know if it's just me and I'm being weird about this or what, but I think it's kinda yuck and inappropriate to date/sleep with your ex's brother. [image]
Let alone realize that you screwed the wrong brother first, only to later end up in the same family. Ffs, Max was this close to being her brother in law. There are other fish in the sea, Lina! I mean, I'm saying this mainly because it's not like they connected on a higher level or anything. They were just like "oh yeah, we were almost related by marriage, but whatever, you're hot so I'd hit that". I can't even..
Unfortunately, this romantic comedy didn't do much for me. I feel like it wasn't even a little bit romantic, nor was it funny. Just poorly written and a little too cheesy....more
