I’m a sucker for a book being compared to Time Traveler’s Wife and I was drawn in by the concept. A woman receives a text from a man who claims to be her husband. But she’s not married - yet, anyway. That was all it took for me to be interested.
However I wasn’t prepared for some of the heavier topics that are covered in this book and ultimately it’s not right for me right now. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy. ...more

When I requested this book, I remembered that I really liked the first book in the series. I should have checked my reviews though because I’m quitting this book for the same reason I quit the second book in this series - the diet culture references. I don’t need to see every time a character eats a cupcake that they reference multiple times the extra time they will spend on the treadmill to make up for it.
I also don’t get the enemies to lovers aspect since it seems so one sided. This was a miss for me. Thank you to Forever for the advance reading copy. ...more

I loved the author’s note at the beginning so much. A story set in academia with a fat heroine - and a note to make sure we know fat is just one aspect of who she is and the story isn’t about losing weight or learning to love herself as she is because she already does. YAY to all of that!!!
I also really enjoyed the writing at the start. However the characters and the story didn’t follow through for me. Second chance romance is often a miss for me - and even more so in this case where the characters are being mean to each other. It was just annoying me and making me cringe. After seeing reviews from some trusted friends - I don’t think it’s going to get better so I decided to call it quits here and DNF. I really enjoy the Mary Russell books and was excited to try a stand-alone with different characters from the author. I was intrigued by the premise - investigating a cold case from 50 years ago, possible serial killer, told in alternating timelines. Unfortunately, it just isn’t working for me. I miss the wit and humor of Mary Russell. I read half the book and don’t feel connected to anyone and don’t feel compelled to see how it ends.
