Life goes on, even if it is hardscrabble, bittersweet, or just a bit of recovery even while being on the run. But life does go on. People will grow even while pulling the same shit. Others will pull all the old shit while others just feel all the new pain of what has just happened.
What I’m saying is this: life is a REAL MESS and this comic spells ALL of that out in pureblood technocolor.
I’m loving it again. It all boils down to what you expect to get out of the tale. And from the very start, it was always a glorious mess. I should never have forgotten that. We will continue to lose our loved ones. Over and over and over. That’s life....more

I mean, I've read the whole Naruto series twice and that whole story arc of the kid with the nine-tailed demon fox living within him was all kinds of awesome. So why do I love Monstress?
The demon living inside her, of course. SOOOO COOL!
Really, though, the artwork is all kinds of amazing and the story kicks me in my bollocks. It's bloody, it's disturbing, it's setting us up for all kinds of epic, and I'm completely hooked. It's kinda like Claymore and Berserk rolled into one, only the artwork is fully realized and colored on every page and it's just soooo gorgeous. And disturbing. :)
I can't wait to see what kind of friendship they strike up. :)

As for everything else, including the last trials of Superman, I was still rather impressed. It's that whole last will and testament thing. Very emotional.
Put together with the first volume, the whole story sequence was pretty great. Grant Morrison is a very strange dude, but he's also smart. It really shows on the page....more

No. This started gentle, got me invested heavily, and then the true horror settled in. It was, of course, worse because it was real.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I burst into tears several times, and it wasn't always for just the people depicted as mice. I am horrified, yet again. So absolutely horrified. Again. And it's always worse because we hear of still more atrocities around the world at different times and I have to wonder if there's anything worth saving in mankind.
I know there is. But I have to wonder.
As for this particular graphic novel, it won the Pulitzer for very good reason.
It's also banned all over the place because certain people are still invested in burying the truth, either to keep a beloved scapegoat or to perpetuate prejudice. Either way, fuck them. Everyone ought to pick this up and read it. Don't forget your history. Don't forget everyone's shared history. Don't forget our shared humanity, or we will all be doomed to repeat the same fucking mistakes.

The only issues that were a little too weird for me was with Olson, and Lex in his last interview stretched some credulity when it came to Clark flubbing so much, but it really underscore the possibility that everything was not as it seemed -- as in multiple layers.
I think my absolute favorite was Lois's b-day gift, however. Everything about that was pretty awesome....more

Okay, so this volume is what happens when someone who is supposed to be smart and knowledgeable about his genres and literary conventions goes out of his way to make a mockery of absolutely everything and doubles down on the meta, masquerading as an anti-writer's-block while eventually having absolutely nothing to say.
In its particulars, it sometimes comes off smart, but as the story lays itself out, I just want to cry.
I'm a fan of meta stuff when it's done right. This one... proceeded to tear apart everything that made Fables decent and shat upon it.

Indeed, everything about this particular volume just clicked for me. That's something the previous 5 tried hard and more or less failed to do.
So, all of a sudden, I'm finally on-board. I'm actually liking people here, now. Perhaps it's the expanded worldbuilding, the additional source material (Swift, for example), or the addition of extended families. Who knows! I'm enjoying it, and that's enough....more
