Thank you for that as well. My first graders were mesmerized with this story and the audible sigh of dismay occurred when I told them that they have to wait quite a bit of time before book 2 and 3 in the series come out. There was tears, laughter, and applause. Mindy Kim is a young girl who has had to deal with a lot of change in a short amount of time. Mindy's mom recently passed away. This is by no means a spoiler, because you learn this early in the book. Her dad is struggling with the aftermath of her death, while trying to hold it all together for Mindy. At the same time, he is transferred to Florida from California for his job. This means more change including a move, a new home, and a new school for Mindy. Mindy's new school is nowhere near as diverse as her previous school. She feels different and it only gets worse when kids start making fun of her lunch, including dried seaweed chips. Mindy decides she has to come up with a plan in order to make friends and this is when she comes up with her seaweed business. But her plan backfires and she learns who her true friends really are. O highly recommend this book as a read aloud for kinder and first graders and it is is perfect for second and third graders. Both my students and I cannot wait to meet Mindy again in book 2 and 3. This book is available in January of 2020 with books 2 and 3 soon to follow....more

This book comes out in Dec. 2019 and is book 2 of the Once Upon a Fairy Tale series by Anna Staniszewski. I absolutely love the Scholastic Branches series that are being published for early readers, and this book just reaffirmed my love for them! In this story, Kara and Zed return for a new adventure involved Prince Patrick. Someone has stolen the Prince's glass slipper from his personal library, which he needs to locate the mysterious lady who got away and might be his one true love. Since Kara's comes from a family of shoe-makers, and Zed is a messenger for the Kingdom, they feel they are the perfect people to help with the search to find who took the glass slipper. Together, they devise a plan to find the mystery thief, in hopes to bring the Prince and his one true love back together. Young readers will love this story, as this early chapter book has short chapters, making it accessible to children who are ready to begin their journey into chapter books. Add in a bit of mystery, some fairy tale feeling and charm, and it is a perfect read. Great for children in grades 1st through 3rd grade or anyone looking for a cute mystery with a fairy tale feel....more

I read this aloud to my first graders and they loved this story. Arnold and Louse decide to celebrate "Fell", the season between fall and winter when all the leaves have fallen from the trees. Arnold is the calm, organized of the two, while Louise is the fast-paced, messy one. They decide to make Arnold's famous popcorn balls but to Arnold's dismay, Louise just makes a mess of everything. As a result, they decide to go make the largest pile of leaves ever, but every time Arnold gets close to making the perfect leaf hill, Louise decides to jump in and ruin it. The two get into an argument and decide they will do their activities by themselves, and they on their individual ways. As they both are working on their task, they realize it just isn't the same without their friend. Will the two work it out? Will they be able to be friends once again?
This story is sweet and one that children who are at the early reader stage will love. With short chapters and larger text, it is perfect for this age group. Themes appear about friendship, how to handle conflict, and the realization that it is okay that our friends are different from us, because that is what makes them special and friendships stronger. My students begged for me to read book 1 and 2 to them next week....more

I am so excited to find an #ownvoices book with a Somali-American character in it. It is so important that children see themselves within texts, as well as learn about cultures different than their own. This is an early reader book, that is a great entry point for children who are starting to read beginning chapter books. If you are a fan of the Yasmin series, you will love this book and series as well. Sadiq and his friends are on a mission to raise money for a telescope, after visiting the observatory on a recent field trip. Little do they know how much telescopes cost. What can they do to accomplish their goal? You will have to read it to find out if their "mission" is accomplished. This book touches on themes of family as Sadiq explores his relationship with his father, family heritage, as well friendship. Throw in a little science about stars, and you have a fun story that will have children wanting to read the others in the series. Kids love series, so I am always looking for more early reader series to have so I can recommend them to children/students....more
