So, this book was a bit of a slow burn, and slow burns do not work very well for me. Plus, I had a hard time connecting to this book. This book does touch on many subjects which may be triggers for some such as suicide, loss, grief, etc.
The writing was well done, and things do come together in the end, but this book just didn't work for me. We can't love them all. Please read other reviews as well to determine if this book is for you.

I loved the eerie feel of this book. Plus, it has that trapped feeling that I love in books. We Used to Live Here is oozing with atmosphere, dread, and tension. It has that something-isn't-quite-right feeling throughout the book, mainly because something-isn't-quite-right! As eerie and strange things began to happen, I was glued to the pages.
This is going to be a Netflix original movie and I can understand why. It's unsettling and there were times I wondered if things were really happening or was this all in Eve's mind. I thought the author did a great job with this. The author also did a great job with the what-is-happening and what-is-going-to happen-next feel of the book.
I finished the book with many unanswered questions. I feel Eve had many unanswered questions as well. I wonder if this was deliberately done to have readers feel what Eve felt. hmmm...

When I started this book, I had no idea that I would enjoy this book as much as I did. I enjoyed the gothic feel of this book. I also enjoyed the characters, even the unlikeable ones. There were characters that I was rooting for while there were others I was booing and hissing at during the book. I thought the author did a great job with all of them. I also love the setting being Victorian England. Hence, the gothic feel of the book. Plus, it adds to the atmosphere of the book.
I couldn't help but feel for twin sisters Keziah and Tilly Lovell. Then there is Theo, deemed a bastard/illegitimate, who is cast out by his grandfather. This book shows those who are deemed as being different and how they are treated by their families and society. Circuses/shows/big tops, whatever you wish to call them, are a place to see extraordinary and odd things. This book explores the fascination people have with those who do not fit in with ‘conventional’ society, those who are different, those who are ‘freaks/oddities.
This is not always an easy book to read. Human Nature can be messy and not always pleasant.
I found this book to be evoking of emotion and thought provoking. I found this book to be well written, well thought out, and captivating. I was fully invested in the story. I look forward to reading more books by Essie Fox in the future.

There is so much going on with the characters, I liken this book to a nighttime soap opera ala Desperate Housewives in that it's dramatic, entertaining, full of secrets, and dysfunction. The Astrology House was enjoyable from cover to cover with no down time.
Margot is looking for answers and a time to get away with her husband, Ted and her brother, Adam, his wife Aimee, and their close friends. She could really use the time away from her busy job and attempts to start a family. The Stars Harbor Astrological Retreat seems like a perfect getaway for relaxing, bonding, getting insight, and fun.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this book. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the many twists, turns and revelations in this book. There are quite a few characters, but it was easy to keep track of everyone and their individual quirks, issues, and personalities. They are a group with secrets, and it was fun watching everything play out. Rini is the astronomer who is hosting them and has a secret or two herself. Instead of getting their charts read, they could all have a contest to see who has the biggest secret amongst them! This group might look picture perfect, but they are far from it!
I enjoyed the tension which slowly built in this book. I enjoyed the interesting dynamics between the characters. Plus, this book has that trapped feeling that I enjoy in books. They are at home but there is a storm coming in and they are all stuck together as the drama unfolds. I have to say that there was one reveal which I did not see coming and boy was that a shocker!!! Well done, Jaede, well done!
Astrology is discussed but if that is not your thing, don't worry, it’s not overbearing or a HUGE part of the book.

Mark is single, comes from a good family, has a good job, and just happens to be seated next to Emily at her sister's wedding.
Emily's Mom's meddling leads to fake dating and a lot of food along the way! We all know what is going to happen next. But as I always say it is all about the journey in romance books. I found this to be slow to start but enjoyable. There is more than meets the eye with these characters.
This was an enjoyable read full of drama, family expectations, some laughs, fake dating, and romance.

Secrets are the name of the game - someone knows their darkest, deepest secrets and will use them during this "Survivor" type game.
This was an interesting read and I enjoyed how Heather Gudenkauf gave snippets of backstory on the contestants and their personal lives. Readers become privy to the secrets during the book. Even when knowing their backstories, I kept wondering what is the end game? Who will win? Who will lose?
I enjoyed this book and found it to be entertaining and fun. I loved the feeling of being trapped (even though they could leave at any time.) at the villa. They all wanted the money so badly that they were willing to stay and endure the challenges. In fact, they had 10 million reasons for wanting to stay. I enjoyed the tension, the unraveling of secrets, and the trapped feeling in the book. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was going to break first.
I found this book to be interesting and can see this being made into a movie.
Tense, well written, full of secrets, and danger.

This book has an eerie and chilling vibe to it. Something isn't quite right with this family. There are secrets and then there are the Wright Family secrets! They are dark, dark secrets. Imagine being trapped in a home with them and they are circling around Luca, and you can't escape. I love that trapped feeling in books. Not only do the characters have to deal with not being able to leave and being cut off from the outside world, but they also must face being stuck with a killer, hidden alliances, and the weather. Tensions rise, anxiety mounts, and there is a figure/ghost that Luca has seen that has unfinished business.
Let's talk about the atmosphere in this book - it's fantastic! I love atmospheric books, and this felt the bill. The family compound paired with the storm creates a chilling atmosphere. This book has a gothic feel to it. I enjoyed the descriptions and the compound felt very much like a character in the book as well.
This book has a strong LGBTQ representation. The book also touches on identity/sexual identity, homophobia, bigotry, and mental health to name a few. This book also has religious talk and characters who talk the talk but aren't walking the walk.
I had no idea what I was getting into with this book. There are the secrets, the matter of whodunit, the dysfunctional relationships, and a father trying to protect his child from bigotry. This was a little bit slow in the beginning, but things really picked up for me close to the halfway point and I had to know what would be revealed or happen next.

This is a nice book for fans of Van Halen. This book talks about the tours, the albums, their concerts, musical skills, the important dates, and major events for the band. It also discusses the issues between the band members ranging from personality issues, difference of opinions concerning music and artistic clashes. The title of this book comes from the author showing 50 milestones on the band's 50th anniversary.
I found the book to be a little clunky at times and I felt it had a flow issue as a result. This was due to the author breaking down the album art and the concerts. Having said that, I enjoyed the pictures, the album art, learning some things that I did not know about the band, and the individual band members and their side gigs. Although the book does talk about the band, it gave a lot of attention to Eddie Van Halen (much deserved), David Lee Roth and Sammy Hager.
An overall interesting and informative book for fans of the band. I liked the personal approach to describing the members of the group and showing them as not only Rock gods but as people with had their own struggles in life. Plus, you get to see some memorabilia and great pics.

There they will perform challenges and the one who under performs will be sent packing. The characters are an interesting mix of people who are hoping to use the show to jumpstart their aspirations for fame.
Then a brutal storm hits, and the contestants will be tested in more ways than one! Having handed over all their phones upon arrival, the contestants are cut off from the mainland and the real challenges begin. Faced with death, injury, dehydration, alliances, and dwindling supplies, survival becomes the name of the game.
I found this book to be captivating and tense! Set on a remote island, it also had that trapped feeling that I enjoy in books. I enjoyed how realistic this book felt. When the cameras were no longer rolling, we got to see their true personalities and motivations. The book tells us that reality shows always have a villain. Who will be the villain in this book?? I am not a reality show watcher, but I image those who enjoy reality television shows will love this one.
There were some twists, turns and reveals along the way. I enjoyed the journal entries and thought they were a nice touch. While I can't say that this was my favorite book by Ruth Ware, I can say that I enjoyed it.

But when she hears that Chef Delaclaire will be visiting her school and judging her classes baking, she finds her voice when she sees a baking ingredient mishap. I loved that there was a positive reaction when she did use find her voice!
The illustrations in this book were delightful and so well done. But the message here is the most important thing. Quiet and introverted children still have things to say. Having a passion, in this book Violet's passion is baking, is not only important but can help children and adults be more confident. They already have a voice and opinions, but it helps them to be heard and appreciated. This happens instantly in the book but often does not happen overnight, but I loved the message.
Another part of the book I loved was the section for adults. There are discussion questions and activities to do with children. Plus, there is a recipe that Violet uses in the book titled "Violet's confidant cookies."
This book is short, but the message is BIG.

This is my first book by the author, and I look forward to reading more of this author's books in the future.

College friends who have begun to drift apart are invited, along with their families, by Max and Annie Kingsley for a weekend glamping trip. It should have been a time to reconnect, their children to play together, and for memories to be made. But a powerful storm and "tensions" damper the mood. The setting and the storm set the stage while adding to the tension and feeling of isolation in the book. They are cut off from help as one of their group members goes missing.
I enjoyed this book and the how it was told through multiple POV's, the weekend itself, and police interrogations-investigation.

Sixteen-year-old Odile wants a place on the council. If she gets the spot, she gets to decide who can visit/cross the borders into her town. One day she witnesses two elderly individuals and recognizes them as the elderly parents of the boy she loves. When she sees them, she realizes that the one she loves is going to die.
The premise of this book is intriguing, and I feel that this book would play out well in movie form. It took some time for me to wrap my mind around this. I am not the biggest fantasy and speculative fiction reader and I feel that others will enjoy this book more than I did.

The Fairway players are preparing for their production of Jack and the Beanstalk to raise money for the Church roof appeal. But is someone trying to stop their production??? There is talk that the fibreglass beanstalk may be full of asbestos. But the show must go on (or will it?).
This book is told in a unique fashion. It is told through email, whatsapp messages, text messages, etc. This got a little old for me after a while. There were some messages that were hard for me to read on my kindle and had to figure out how to see them better.
Overall, I enjoyed the mystery even though I wasn't the biggest fan of how the book was told. Thankfully, this was a short book. This took me some time to get though (15 days) as I found myself picking up other books as the manner of storytelling wasn't my favorite. I did enjoy the latter part of the book more than the first.
Fans of this type of storytelling will most likely enjoy this book more than I did. I did read The Appeal and that was a 3 star read for me as well.

I do not have a good track record with Janice Hallett's books. I am not a big fan of the format of using whatsapp message, emails, text messages, etc. in her books. In the past, I have found this to be annoying and I have easily lost interest in the plot. Imagine my surprise when I not only enjoyed this one, but I found it to be gripping. I do find cults to be extremely intriguing. The psychology of them and how they attract followers. The way that cults prey on people, manipulate and con, is all very interesting.
The Alperton Angels were a cult who brainwashed a teen mother that her baby was the anti-Christ. What happened that night and the whereabout of the teenage couple and the baby have remained a mystery that is frequently speculated about. Now that the baby is going to be turning eighteen-years old, the interest has increased and true crime author Amanda Bailey plans to write a book about what happened. She is not the only one interested in this case, her rival, Oliver Menzies is also trying to get to the bottom of things.
The author still relies on various media to tell the story. This book took me a little bit of time to get into. I had to get used to her writing technique and how it affected the flow of the book. But once I found my footing, I was able to sink my teeth into this. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way. Plus, there is the supernatural slant.
I am still not the biggest fan of using mixed media as the sole means of storytelling. But I am glad I was able to overlook it to enjoy this book.

A young girl whose mother died during childbirth who tells fortunes and desperately wants to know more about her mother who was disowned when she married Red's father. Prior to her father's death, Red and her father supported themselves by telling fortunes using The Square of Sevens. They are constantly on the move as her father feels that they are in danger. When it is clear he is not going to survive his illness, Red's father asks Mr. Antrobus, a gentleman, to take Red in and raise her.
Red continues to tell fortunes during her life with Mr. Antrobus, while still hoping and trying to learn more about her mother, her mother's family, and her mother's past.
This was a meaty book. Initially I was glued to the pages and interested in learning why Red's father kept them moving and never settling down. But soon this book began to feel slow and very, very long. I have no problem with long books. One of my favorite books is over 1,000 pages but it never felt long. I felt every single page of this book. This book is dubbed a "Dickensian story of mystery and intrigue..." I enjoy Dickens book and only felt the length in one of his books (Bleak House). Can you tell I did not care for how long the book felt. It also felt slow as well and slow, and I do not get along very well.
The chapter titles are very clever as they depict the Square of Sevens but that was not enough to fully win me over. I did enjoy the twists and turns that came along the way. Red experiences a lot in this book. Red is an interesting character. She was raised in a time where she had little choices and opportunity yet found her way and made opportunities for herself. She was strong, inquisitive, and intent on finding the truth no matter what. This book has a lot going on and I usually enjoy Gothic tales, but this is one that never fully won me over.
This book was well written and well thought out.

The book, at 272 pages, is slow and relies on flashbacks to tell part of the story. There is a supernatural element that also comes into play.
I felt that most of this book went over my head and found myself re-reading sections. I was unable to connect with any of the characters or the story. When the supernatural element came into play, the book had already lost me. This was unique and atmospheric; I will give it that.
Many enjoyed this book, but it was not for me. Again, I enjoy horror books but apparently not this type of horror book. As the description says, it is dark. It is also slow and another book that felt much longer than the 272 pages.

The worst is yet to come!
I had no idea about what was going to happen and was left blind sighted with my jaw hanging open with each shocking twist and reveal. Will Dean you clever, clever, man. I enjoyed the sense of unease, tension and danger that flowed throughout the book. Wowza! I could not put this gripping and shocking book down! It became a jaw dropping page turner for me!

I had no idea where this book was heading but I enjoyed the ride McMahon took me on! As we grow older, many of us become caregivers for our parents. Disturbing and bizarre things begin to happen with no explanation. A sense of unease begins to creep in. Alison has always had a tense and uneasy relationship with her mother but can't help but shake the feeling that something isn't quite right with her mother.... that maybe there is something more sinister happening.
This book is eerie, chilling and has a nice amount of tension and unease flowing throughout. With McMahon's other books, this book was well written, gripping, well thought out and took me by surprise. What a great book for the fall season! This book would make a fantastic movie. Hint hint... just putting it out there.
Fans of McMahon's previous books will enjoy this one immensely. It is so well done and perfectly paced. Nothing is rushed or drawn out. As the plot unfolded, I was enveloped in a sense of dread, unease, and tension. Just how I enjoy fall horror(ish) books.
