I got so much serotonin from this book, it'll last me the whole week. It's as funny and sweet as it is stimulating and intelligent. The story is immersed in classic faerie folklore, which is my one true Roman Empire. It is also incredibly well thought out, just as good as the first one, and it goes beyond all expectations. I honestly could not stop reading/listening to it, even when I got headaches. Besides, for some reason, I thought this series would be a duology, so you can imagine my surprise and delight when I found out there is going to be another book. I seriously can't wait. I need more ASAP.
Naturally, Emily and Wendell live in my head and my heart rent-free. Emily is the same research-driven, socially awkward genius that I fell in love with. Wendell is the same lazy, ass-kissing charmer, who stole my heart. I love that he will only lift a finger if Emily asks him to (maybe not even then sometimes). Both of them together make the perfect couple. They complement each other so well, and the way they instantly turn into feral mother hens when the other is hurt or in trouble is my new reason to live.
Finally, the best characters in this whole series, aside from the aforementioned, are Shadow, Poe, and Snowbell. Shadow has been Emily's most loyal and adorable four-legged companion since the first book. I am known to obsess over fictional pets and this floof is not helping. Besides, Poe and Snowbell are tiny faerie creatures that sneaked their way deep into my heart and took permanent residence there. They are so adorable, they could literally fit into my pocket. Poe likes to bake bread, Snowbell loves adventures, and they are both so helpful to Emily and Wendell, which is amazing given that they're faeries. You cannot imagine how bitter I am that I can't have my own faerie friends just because reality is so goddamn boring. ...more

This is the perfect series to start when you want something brief to read, but still need a well-thought-out and stimulating story. Instead of full-length novels, this series comes in volumes and each one has fifteen chapters. These volumes aren't the only way to enjoy this series, though. There are also audiobooks you can find on the author's website, narrated by several voice actors. After much convincing, I decided to try audiobooks for the first time. I'm glad I chose this series to do so because the voice actors only added to the story. Also, for someone who gets a lot of headaches lately (from staring at a computer too long at work), this is the perfect way to keep up with my TBR.
As I've already mentioned this story is incredibly well thought out. The plot and lore are fantastic. I love how the story progresses little by little with each volume so there's no overload of info-dumping while remaining complex and interesting. Besides, the lore is much of the same. There are several vampire factions, each with their own magical abilities. They are all so amazing, I can't decide which one's my favorite. Also, the general vampire lore is a nice blend of the old and modern folklore that continues to develop in each volume.
Moreover, all the main boys in this series are as adorable as they have ever been. They have such emotional depth, and they are as sensitive as much as they are strong. Julian is wonderful, and his relationship with Christian is as strong as ever. His relationship with Daemon is also amazing, even though I am not a fan of insta-love. Even Christian, whose trauma left him afraid of forming strong bonds with anyone other than Julian and his parents, has finally allowed himself to trust Balthazar. However, my favorite relationship in this volume is the newfound bromance between Balthazar and Daemon. I could tell it was coming, yet it still had me squealing louder than any romance scene in the series. I can't wait to read more of all of them in the next volume....more

This is exactly as adorable as everybody said. There is nothing but cuteness from start to finish, and just enough conflict and angst so it doesn't get boring. There isn't much plot, per se, it is heavily focused on Viv's coffee shop. Also, there is almost no romance at all, other than a few long looks, some moments of closeness, and a very brief kiss. All of them are heartwarming. What there is a lot of is the found family trope. It is clear that this book revolves around the wholesome relationships between the characters and what brings them together as much as it is about coffee. This is purely a feel-good book. However, I have one complaint. The beginning of the book is significantly slower in pace than the rest. There is too much focus on the building process of the coffee show. While I understand its significance as it comes back later, I think that fifty pages is too much of it.
Moreover, the characters are all amazing. Viv is the sweetest orc there is. All she wants is to make people happy with coffee. She has some people from her past she cares for as much as they care for her, and everyone she meets in Thune is adorable. Also, Tandri, Viv's assistant in the coffee shop, is thoughtful and loyal, with a dark past of her own. She is a succubus who just wants to be accepted and respected in spite of her species.
Besides, Thimble, the coffee shop's baker, might just be the best character in the book aside from Amity the dire-cat, who is basically just a giant cat. No more information is needed. Thimble is a small-statured, selective mute with insane baking abilities and a kind heart. There's also Calamity, Cal for short, a hob who is as equally shunned as orcs and succubi but hasn't let that affect who he is. He does honest work and is a wonderful friend. Not to mention Pendry, the bard. He is as brave as he is talented. He refuses to let his fears and insecurities win and I love him so much for it. All of Vib's customers are the same as well. In fact. even some of the antagonists are likable. I didn't hate them for long. I would literally die for all of them.
Lastly, what I loved most of all is obviously the relationship between the characters. That is the most important part of the book. It is pure and a cure for the soul. Even when misfortune found Viv, everyone stuck with her and helped her, even those who antagonized her. Even though there is little to no romance and I expected some more, I was perfectly content with the platonic love between all these characters. I didn't need anything more....more
