Flooded Secrets is the second book after Awakenings which I also really enjoyed. If you're looking for some epic fantasy, lots of fae lore and deep political intrigue, you may be disappointed.
I can see what's to like, when you like that kind of thing. It's a romance-driven story in an elves & fae queernormative world with cute animal-like bonds. It's well written and pulls you in and keeps you reading... up to a certain point. For me, I was really intrigued, was immersed for a time, but ultimately couldn't get behind any of the romances. We've got sapphic enemies-to-lovers where they're enemies for a bit then somehow fall in love out of nowhere. The other romance doesn't have anything special either... I guess I would have liked more lore, more fantasy, more politics (and this comes from someone who doesn"t read that much fantasy...), more sibling bonds.
Maybe I wasn't in the mood, maybe it wasn't for me, but this book just didn't do anything to surprise or make me care for the characters or the world enough to care about what could have been an epic fantasy story about bad ass warrior women.

And despite his last couple of books being 3 star reads, he still remains an author I admire, that I know will write books full of emotion. . Ultimately, this is story of abuse and trauma and finding hope where there first seemed to be none. And that was beautifully told. But the problem for me was how sad and angry and depressed it made me feel all along. The hope and slight nice elements only really came at the very end, after hours of suffering. And of course this is a story that needs to be told, we need stories of hurt and trauma and how abuse can make people feel so lonely and sad and anxious. But it just wasn't really what I was looking for especially this pride month, and the blurb clearly doesn't say much about what this book is actually about.

It felt really good. I honestly didn't think The Fragile Threads Of Power would bring back such good memories from The Shades of Magic series.
As someone who doesn't read much fantasy anymore, these kinds of books are what make me want to try more. The world(s) building and the ever growing details surrounding the magic in these worlds are so interesting! And there's more to come. I was also surprised that the new characters actually ended up being the ones I wanted to know more about.
We got a lot of set up for what's to come. It is probably going to be veeeery interesting. I just wished MORE had happened in this first book other than setting things up.

Sapphic dark fantasy, lonely women finding each other. The villain getting her happy ending... But in the end it didn't really tick all the boxes for me. It is heavily focused on Mina's relationship with the witch whom she falls in love with before the witch does anything nice, they almost never speak (kindly) to one another before then... (or we just don't really get to see it as time goes by quite fast in the book). Stockholm syndrome, much? I also felt a little unease when Mina engaged a nonconsensual kiss / 'suprise-kiss' (that ended up making the witch happy because it was "needed" for the witch to understand that Mina really did love her?) The dark mystery behind the witch and why she needs companions was intriguing but not really that surprising. I did appreciate the writing, the ambiance, the way it ended.

To regain his true power and form and fulfil his destiny, Everen only needs to convince one little thief to trust him enough to bond completely--body, mind, and soul--and then kill them. But as the bond tightens, the two grow closer and closer...
A lot to like. I'm scared to see what happens next. Bring it on.

It is always such a pleasure to come back to the world of your old faves. Following new adventures with characters you love so dearly. Just for that, I'm glad we have this book. I'm glad we get to have more adventures with Percy and Annabeth and Grover.
But I must admit, knowing that this is now a trilogy of books and not just a single one, I find myself thinking that it wasn't really necessary. I don't want to get to the point of "it's going too far now". I don't want to get to the point of feeling like books are coming out just cause there's a new adaptation and it's good marketing. Do these characters still have so much room to grow that it had to be done over three books? I'm really not sure.
But if one person can prove me wrong, it's Uncle Rick. So go ahead. Please.

But that's mostly because I cared so much about about these characters in the first book that seeing them again and seeing them interact just gave me so much joy and feels. BUT I also know that this book does not live up to the previous one. I kind of read it sporadically and was always happy to pick it back up, but didn't really feel the need to turn every page and loose sleep over it, which is what I got from reading Silver Under Nightfall. There was less action, less anticipation, more sex but less actual development within the different characters, and the ending felt a little anticlimactic...

Would love to reread to give it more stars as i think it probably deserves. I'm really getting into cosy sci-fi or fantasy! I love that it's just a bunch of various people / creatures being nice and helpful to one another, forming a found family, without too many "great stakes" or risks. Books like these are important. I'd also say they are, for me at least, probably best read with your eyes. (duh?) I mean, physical or digital ebook but not audio. I love audio but with this one i felt like it went too quick and i didn't take the time to appreciate the slow calm nature of it....more

One of my favourite middle grade novels, for sure. We follow Eliot, who has just moved to a new town after her Babung, her grandmother, passed away. Eliot has been struggling with grief and wants to contact her Babung's ghost. But it's upon other ghosts that she stumbled upon in the creepy house she's now gardening at. With the help of Hazel, the girl staying at the strange house, she has to help the ghosts get their memories back if they want to pass to the other side serenely.
This story is about a girl trying to process grief and accept to move on in a new town. It's about the ghosts she helps and their stories. It's about family and friendship and crushes on girls.
It was beautiful. The vibes were perfect for me: sweet well developed characters, a strange house with a magical key, magical objects and wonderful lost souls....more

It is a whole other thing to have known a character for over a decade, to have followed him through the worst things imaginable, to have read about his sadness and despair and shame (again, for fifteen years!), to then have him have his own journey of acceptance and relief and joy and love. There is no feeling better than this. And no other book will make me feel this again. I can guarantee that.
