I would not rate another kid's grief at the loss of their parents. I found this in goodreads choice awards - the "best memoir and autobiography of 2021" as nominated by goodreaders. I also picked this because I listened Michelle before from their band Japanese Breakfast.
Following "When Breath Becomes Air" I assume this is the next sensitive and vulnerable read I have tried (keeping aside my repeated futile attempts with Sylvia Plath's journals ...more

This is a wholesome reading - very fulfilling, absorbing, no-nonsense, and heart-warming as well. When I started this book my expression was this is very sweet-to-read (sugarcoated) as if tailored to deliver a strong message or polished to avoid things that people do not expect to hear from a first lady!
However, after a while I came to love the rhythm and melody of the book. All journeys have ups-and-downs along with a heap of difficult-to-make choices. Even when choices have been made, the mind's voice won't often sit still! I can't say for sure how much these choices do make us or undo us!
I assume healthy, fulfilling relationships of all types might have a team-like structure, where different circumstances would require different maneuvers from different team members. Where team members tend to understand whatever adjustments they need to make so that other team members can perform well and it won't go unnoticed, will be acknowledged, and are required for the overall well-being of the team! Where the team-members are willing to leave a little room to listen whatever thing the other person has to say!
But do all these happen only in an ideal world? ...more
I had been literally dying to read this book since when Walter Isaacson posted about this online. Earlier he had authored da Vinci's biohgraphy in 2017. After finishing that book, I wondered whether I would be lucky enough to read another work from him. Yeah, I have been lucky in that sense ~ It took only four years!
Well, what can I say about this book? I am feeling intensely emotioanl about this one and obviously, I would give it A Thousand Stars! Apart from Atul Gawande's "Being Mortal", this is another best-read for me in 2021! Such a brilliant, marvellous piece on CRISPR, its application in genome editing, diagnosing & curing diseases, and how it can be used to fight coronavirus. And most importantly, the star of this book is Jennifer Doudna - the Wonder Woman in science.
I am glad to have finished all the four genius-&-geek biographies from Isaacson: da Vinci, Einstein, Steve Jobs, and finally Jennifer Doudna. Being a long time fan of his work, nothing could give me such pleasure. This book has been very timely - following Jennifer and Emmanuelle's 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in last October.
Jennifer is the main star of this book. Undoubtedly she has an amazing personality. I really love the way how she is comfortable with her competitiveness and wears it gracefully up in her sleeve while balancing her collegiality and brilliant passion for the splendid research she is doing. This book is really inspiring for me being a woman in science and technology. I particularly enjoyed how versatile and different Jennifer and Emmanuelle are (with respect to one another) as women and researchers as well.
I was deeply moved reading the second last chapter that discusses how CRISPR based technologies and RNA vaccines can be and are indeed being used to fight COVID-19. I lost my father to COVID just a few months before the vaccines reached our country. So, I ended up crying while reading this chapter a few hours ago. All I can say here is that... these people are doing a great job and hopefully their invention will save the lives of our beloved ones!...more

The strong points about this book are - the amazing personality of the book's hero and the beautiful illustrations from the talented artist. But in some cases lousy English from the writer made poor appearance. The writer frequently used inappropriate, odd verbs with respect to the scenario.
However, Abdul Kalam's great personality would amaze the readers despite some shortcomings of the book. It was pleasant to get a view of his life, values, passion and outstanding contribution to science. The book could be a bit elaborate. The events came and went by so fast. Naturally, you would feel to know more about him. But I understand, extending the scope of the book will increase its price! Once again he has chosen such a marvellous personality of incredible genius for his book - Leonardo da Vinci. বইটা পড়ে রিয়্যাকশনঃ একটা মানুষ এত কিছু পারে কীভাবে! মূলত লিওনার্দোর লেখা নোটবুক গুলোর উপর ভিত্তি করে ওয়াল্টার তাঁর এই বইটিকে সাজিয়েছেন ৩৩টি চ্যাপ্টারে। প্রতিটি চ্যাপ্টার খুবই ইনফরমেটিভ, well planned.বইটাতে এত বেশি ইনফরমেশন, আমার মনে হয় আমি রিভিউ লিখতে গিয়ে একটু বেশ অগোছালো করে ফেলব। আসলে কোনটা ছেড়ে কোনটা লিখব। একটা লিখতে গিয়ে মাঝে দিয়ে লিওনার্দোর আরেক গুণের কথা মনে পড়ছে, ঐটা লিখতে গিয়ে আরেকটা, এরকম।
একেকটি চ্যাপ্টারে লিওনার্দোর একেকটি বিশেষ দিক, শিল্পকর্ম এবং কাজ নিয়ে আলোকপাত করা হয়েছে, আর অবধারিতভাবেই মোনালিসা-র জন্য ছিল একটি পূর্ণ চ্যাপ্টার। লিওনার্দোর নোটবুক এন্ট্রি্র কিছু টু-ডু লিস্ট দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে বইটি। যেমন, হাঁসের পায়ের পাতা কীরকম দেখতে, কীভাবে কাঠঠোকরার জিহ্বা কাজ করে , কিভাবে কুমীরের চোয়াল কাজ করে, ইত্যাদি। এমন না যে এগুলো তাঁর কাজের জন্য তাঁর দরকার ছিল কিন্তু এই মানুষটা কী অসম্ভব জানার আগ্রহ নিয়ে জন্মেছেন তারই উদাহরণ যেন নিজের জন্য লেখা এই টু ডু লিস্ট টি।

Ludovico Sfroja এর কোর্টে লিওনার্দো যখন চাকরির জন্য আবেদন করে তাঁর resume/ cover letter পাঠান, সে চিঠিতে মূলত তাঁর ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং স্কিলের কথাই তিনি উল্লেখ করেছেন। একটিবারের জন্যেও তিনি যে শিল্পী তাঁর মেনশন করেন নি। এমন কি পরবর্তীতে তিনি তাঁর scientific inquiry & engineering projects গুলো নিয়ে এতই নিমগ্ন থাকতেন যে পেইন্টিং ব্রাশ নিয়ে বসে ছবি আঁকার কাজটা তাঁর কাছে তখন রীতিমত অসহ্য ঠেকত।
Isaacson didn't mention Leonardo's genius as god-gifted rather he termed it as self-acquired. Leonardo was a self-taught person and he duly deserved the credit for his genius. যেমন, লিওনার্দো গণিতের অনেক ব্যাপারই ঠিকমত বুঝতেন না কিন্তু গাণিতিক সমস্যাগুলো তিনি সবসময় ছবি এঁকে বা জিওমেট্রিক ফিগার দিয়ে এঁকে চিন্তা করে সলভ করবার ট্রাই করতেন। যেমন, তিনি অনেকদিন রুলার আর কম্পাস ব্যবহার করে ক্ষেত্রফল অপরিবর্তিত রেখে বৃত্তকে স্কয়ার করার ট্রাই করছিলেন। এছাড়া ৬৭ বছর বয়সেও তাঁর নোটবুকে দেখা গেছে তিনি বিভিন্ন মাপের সমকোণী ত্রিভুজ এঁকে কিভাবে ক্ষেত্রফল অপরিবর্তিত রেখে বিভিন্ন বাহু-দৈর্ঘ্যের সমকোণী ত্রিভুজে কনভার্ট করা যায় সে চেষ্টা করছিলেন। যেটা তিনি শেষ করতে পারেন নি। এই প্রবলেমের নিচে তিনি তাঁর নোটবুকের শেষ লাইন লিখে গেছেন " the soup is getting cold." এই ঘটনাটা মনে করিয়ে দেয় যেভাবে আইনস্টাইন তাঁর জীবনের শেষ সময়ে হসপিটালে ইউনিফাইড ফিল্ড থিওরি প্রবলেমের সলভ করবার জন্য ক্যালকুলেশন করবার চেষ্টা করছিলেন।
লিওনার্দোর পেইন্টিং স্কিলের কথা নিয়ে বলতে গেলে, আগে পেইন্টিং সম্পর্কে আমার ধারণা ছিল জিনিস গুলো এবস্ট্রাক্ট হবে, হয়ত রিয়্যালিটির কিছু এসপেক্ট (যেমন, শ্যাডো, ডিস্ট্যান্ট অবজেক্ট কে ছোট দেখানো এইসব পারস্পেক্টিভ ব্যপারগুলো) কন্টেইন করতে পারে কিন্তু ওভারঅল রিয়্যাল লাইফ ডেপিকশন হবে না। কিন্তু লিওনার্দোর প্রতিটা পেইন্টিং এর এনালাইসিস পড়ে বুঝলাম এই মানুষ টা পেইন্ট করার সময়ও কী পরিমাণ scientific accuracy maintain করত। He was deeply immersed in the scientific studies of lighting, shadows, optics, perspective, reflection & refraction of lights on curved surfaces. And he duly incorporated his acute observations and findings in his paintings. এমন কি একটা পেইন্টিং এ তিনি যে rocks & herbs গুলো এঁকেছিলেন সেগুলোও geographically & geologically correct. এমনকি তাঁর অবসেশন এবং curiosity এমন পর্যায়ে পৌঁছেছিল যে তিনি নিজের হাতে মর্গে এবং হাসপাতালে corps dissect করে শরীরের বিভিন্ন অঙ্গ প্রত্যঙ্গের muscles, veins এগুলো স্টাডি করেছিলেন। প্রতিটা organs, muscles, veins কীভাবে কাজ করে বিভিন্ন motions create করে সেটা তিনি স্বার্থক ভাবে তাঁর বিভিন্ন পেইন্টিং এবং স্কেচে বারেবারে দেখিয়েছেন। His paintings were a successful narrative of motions & emotions. He was a man of perfectionism. তাঁর বিভিন্ন পেইন্টিং এবং কমিশনও ইনকমপ্লিট থাকার কারণ হয়ত তাঁর এই পারফেকশনিস্ট অবসেশন .
অ্যানাটমিক্যাল স্টাডি, স্কেচ, ডেন্টিস্ট্রি, মেডিক্যাল সাইন্স, মেকানিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং, ফ্লুইড ডাইনামিক্স, ফ্লাইট অফ বার্ডস, ফ্লাইং ডাইনামিক্স, মিলিটারি ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং, আরবান প্ল্যানিং, আর্কিটেকচার, জিওলজি , স্কাল্পচার , সবকিছুতে তাঁর এত আবিষ্কার। মিলিটারি ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং এবং মেকানিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং এ তাঁর আবিষ্কারের মূল প্রেরণা হল তাঁর অসম্ভব দারুণ ইমাজিনেশন ক্যাপাবিলিটি। তাঁর অনেক ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং প্ল্যানিং যদিও তাঁর এক্সট্রিম ইমাজিনেশন এবং ফ্যান্টাসির কারণে বাস্তবায়িত হওয়া সম্ভবপর হয় নি, তারপরেও অনেক জিনিসই কয়েক শতাব্দী পর প্র্যাক্টিক্যালি ইমপ্লিমেন্টেশন করা হয়েছে। তিনি ছিলেন তাঁর সময়ের থেকে অনেক আগে। আর সবচেয়ে বড় কথা তিনি তাঁর আবিষ্কারের বেশিরভাগ জিনিসই নোটবুকে রেখে দিয়েছেন, পাবলিশের কথা ভাবলেও কখনও পাবলিশ করেন নি এবং কারো সাথে তাঁর ফাইন্ডিংস শেয়ারও করেন নি। ফলে অনেক জিনিস কে কয়েক শতাব্দী অপেক্ষা করতে হয়েছে অন্য কারো হাতে রিডিস্কভার হওয়ার জন্য।
আইজ্যাকসনের এই বায়োগ্রাফিতে লিওনার্দোর খুবেকটা সমালোচনা নেই। তাঁর স্টিভ জবসের বায়োগ্রাফিতে যেমন জবসের ক্রিসান বেনান এবং লিসার প্রতি তাঁর আচরণ অথবা আইনস্টাইনের তাঁর প্রথম স্ত্রী মিলেভা মারভির প্রতি তাঁর আচরণের সমালোচনা ছিল এ বইতে তেমন কিছু নেই। তার কারণ মূলত লিওনার্দোর হোমোসেক্সুয়ালিটি। রোম্যান্টিক্যালি নারীবিহীন জীবন হবার কারণে হয়ত খুবেকটা বিতর্কের অবকাশ ছিল না তাঁর জীবনে। এমনিতে তাঁকে তাঁর সময়ের কোন যুদ্ধ বিগ্রহ বা রাজনীতিতে অংশগ্রহণ করতে দেখা যায় না কিন্তু বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন শ্ত্রুবাহিনীর আক্রমণ থেকে তাঁর স্টূডিও সমসময় রক্ষা পেয়েছে। এছাড়া তিনি সবসময়ই শক্তিশালী ক্ষমতাবান কোন প্যাট্রন কে পাবার জন্য চেষ্টা করেছেন যদিও তিনি যুদ্ধ কে beastly affair বলে আখ্যা দিয়েছেন তাঁর নোটবইতে । এর কারণ হিসেবে বলা হয়েছে লিওনার্দোর কোন ফাদার ফিগার পাবার প্রতি আকাঙ্ক্ষা যেহেতু তিনি তাঁর বাবার অবৈধ সন্তান ছিলেন এবং তাঁর বাবা কখনই তাঁকে legitimize করেন নি বা উইলে তাঁর জন্য কোন সম্পত্তিও রেখে যান নি। বইতে লিওনার্দোর কাজের তুলনায় তাঁর ব্যক্তিগত জীবন নিয়ে একটু কমই আলোচনা করা হয়েছে।
সব মিলিয়ে আরেকটা চমৎকার বায়োগ্রাফি ওয়াল্টার আইজ্যাকসনের থেকে। জানি না আর কোন নতুন কাজ পাবো কিনা তাঁর থেকে , তবে আশা করতে তো দোষ নেই। O:)

While seeing her answer scripts she told me that her father had cancer. On the exam day he had an operation. She was very tensed. So as soon as she was done with writing she hurried to meet him. She informed me she would be absent in some of my classes as she would be accompanying her father abroad for his treatment.
Before her departure one day in class I was teaching probability models. I gave an example from the life expectancy of cancer patients. Suddenly my eyes fell upon her. I realized she suddenly became upset. I could feel she was thinking about her father. May be the corners of her eyes glistened with tears. Maybe not. I continued my class.
I have seen this book a number of times on goodreads. This came as a recommendation for my favorite biography & memoir genre. But as far as I recall I had no plan to start this book anytime soon. After finishing a book I have troubled time to decide what to pick next. I think the reason I finally picked up this book is that these days I often remembered the sadness I saw in her eyes for her father.
This is indeed a difficult book. Paul had been a neurosurgeon. He completed his B.A. in Human biology & M.A. in English literature from Stanford. He worked on Walt Whitman as his M.A. thesis topic. At this time he realized philosophy had a very abstract way to deal with the questions of human life, its meaning & death. He demanded a more direct confrontation, more direct approach. As he belonged from a family of doctors, he felt medical science could answer his questions. He decided to go through the thorough & detailed preparation for admission in medical school. In the meantime he complete M.Phil. in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine from Cambridge. He graduated from Yale school of medicine in 2007 and received Lewis H. Nahum Prize for his outstanding research. I looked for some of his papers on google scholar.
While many of his classmates chose various less stressed high salaried paths considering the stress of medical life & the want for a quality life style. He decided to go for neuroscience - one of the occupations where stress & tensions are like hell. He joined Stanford for his residency training in neuroscience & completing his post doctoral fellowship in neuroscience. During this period he authored over twenty scientific publications and received the American Academy of Neurological Surgery’s highest award for research. He reached the culmination of his ambition & career. Lots of high salaried job offers were waiting for him.
At this moment terminal stage of lung cancer came as a bolt from the blue. This is not a biography/memoir to feel sorry/sympathy for such an enormously gifted/ brilliant person. Because Paul himself proved brave in the face of this terminal disease. The disease is one of a life shattering. He took the courage to move back to his OR, strenuous responsibilities of a neurosurgeon, though for momentarily. He shared his feelings & thoughts about mortality in the face of his own death. It's just a gentle reminder of how we are just a speck of dust in the vastness of this whole universe.
Paul lived both the life of a patient & a doctor. A few days ago he was the actor who acted upon disease/ patients. Now he became the one who was being acted upon. And for his love of literature, he left back his memoir for us. Though it's incomplete in terms of the final events in his own words, it's complete with the meaning and worth of his life.
While reading Harari's "Homo Deus" the line that "Death is just a technological fault" got stuck in my mid. Whenever somebody, in any of my M.Sc. classes any of my teachers mentioned " death is inevitable" - I would feel resistant remembering Harari's statement. Now it seems like Harari just exaggerated. His statement seems like so overrated & full of fantasy. Just something good to ear.
As a neurosurgeon while Paul learnt to judge whose lives could be saved, whose couldn’t be, and whose shouldn’t be, in his last periods, he decided to withdraw from his own. Because just to keep breathing with some available treatment or means or machine doesn't necessarily mean to live a quality life worth the meaning. The price of keeping this breath going is huge. As Paul put in the earlier parts of his memoir " How much neurologic suffering would you let your child endure before saying that death is preferable? "
After a long time I felt compelled to read something at a stretch. This autobiographical memoir will definitely be very close to my heart....more

It depicts different phases of the life of Bertrand Russell - the mathematician, logician, philosopher, political activist, as well as a Noble laureate. The book tries to be a simple, interesting guide to Russell's complex, laborious & frustrating conquest to pin down the foundations of mathematics.
Though it has an open ending, I hope Doxiadis will soon come up with an interesting epilogue....more

As soon as I started this one, I knew I was in right hands.
I believe no other scientists have enjoyed so much popularity and stardom as Einstein did both in his lifetime and even many years after his death. As per the popular belief, his name is intertwined with the word "Genius". This biography is not mere stories about his great intellectual creativity but also a reflection of the person "Einstein" --- both his good and flawed sides.
Einstein has been quite an unusual person in personal life. He has been a difficult son, husband and father. He revered individualism and personal freedom so much that it added an indifference in his attitude for people close to him. Whenever he would feel confined or caged in relations, he would wall them out. The awful thing about life is this: everyone has his/her own reasons, which makes nothing right, nothing wrong. So it's difficult to judge his response to his first wife Mari & younger son Eduard.
He has been a nonconformist and rebel in his pursuit of science and towards his feeling about politics. His rebellious and nonconformist nature led him to the invention of theory of relativity by leaving classical concept of absolute time and space. But as time went by he himself turned into a reactionary from rebel in the question of accepting dynamic aspects of quantum mechanics. His lifelong passion and work for formulating a unified field theory is worth mentioning.
Einstein’s pacifism, world federalism, and aversion to nationalism were part of a political outlook that also included a passion for social justice, a sympathy for underdogs, an antipathy toward racism, and a predilection toward socialism. The Nazi militarism, anti-semetic feelings and extreme nationalism bonded him more closely with his Jewish ties. Even he was offered the position of President of the newly formed Israel after its first president passed away, which he refused benignly.
His reverence for individualism and freedom made him cherish his American citizenship because of its constitutional promise to preserve individual rights and freedom. But due to his anti-war feelings and support for pacifism, his integrity to USA was often questioned to find any possible ties between him & communism. The FBI accumulated tons of files about him over the years but in vain.
During second world war when Szilard approached him with the fear that the Germans might be experimenting with the idea of a nuclear bomb, then Einstein took initiative to aware president Roosevelt of this mighty weapon. His constant initiative eventually launched the Manhattan project but because his integrity was questioned in the fear of any possible tie with communism, no secret information about this or any other project was ever shared with him . Later on Einstein took strong position against the blind politically waged use of arms.
On the other hand communists denounced him blaming his want for a unified World federation as capitalist propaganda. In this case he suffered the same fate as Charlie Chaplin who was also denounced by both capitalist and communist quarter. In fact Einstein never supported any extremism of either the left or the right wing. Being equally aware of the goods and evils of both capitalism and communism he preferred social democracy. He thought America’s most dangerous internal threat came not from communist subversives but from those who used the fear of communists to trample civil liberties. Harari expressed similar opinion in his book Sapiens about America's hysterical hunt for terrorism.
The final part of the complete biographies are always touching. It feels something different to see how life finally comes to terms with whatever it has gained over time and there's a peaceful warmth of glow....more

In the book one of his statements, "Human rights are above the rights of the State", took me aback. Oh, really! Then I remembered, people are this way. They often say things that they neither mean nor they believe :/ Throughout the book Hitler went on with his propaganda exaggerating his beliefs, struggles. He is just so obsessed with the idea of "pure" race, the book is almost filled with his damn superiority complex. He went on rehashing his ideas, beliefs again & again in a monotonous way. This reminds me, most often we hold the key to put a stop to our misery but we barely notice that. I appreciate Grove's approach to introduce various inflection points in the business from his experience at Intel. But the book is not so well written. Grove surely knows what he has to offer but couldn't match that expectation with his writing. The details of the examples are inadequate & still too short to be sufficient. Many characters are kept anonymous & criticisms are blunt. I guess he took safe side. May be he didn't want to piss off many people. Recently, I finished Steve Jobs' biography & I see he's not that open to Steve's support for vertical platform. It has all the necessary components of a successful biography: 1) A compelling subject (Obviously, this one has Steve with his charismatic personality) 2) An engaging narrative and 3) Accuracy. The last two credits go to Isaacson. He organized the book so beautifully, it kept me engaged throughout the book. My mom didn't like the book cover. :p Everytime she saw it on my table, she said she was afraid of Steve's unblinking stare and turned it upside down :p
Okay, I wanted to add some more to the review. Steve had a really complicated personality. If he had not been a man of his position and status, then the bruising ruthless side of his character , would make him less dear to all. A true biography is about both sweet and sour side of the person. Steve's passion, perfectionism, demons, desires, artistry, devilry & obsession for control --- all are laid out with such accuracy in this book. It has been another successful project of his but the whole credit goes to Isaacson & thanks to Steve for not intervening. :)...more
ডিসিশন মেকিং এর উপর একটা বই পড়ছি । অনেক দিন ধরে কিছু একটা কেনার জন্য টাকা জমাচ্ছ , হঠাত একদিন দোকানে গিয়ে দেখলে তোমার পছন্দের একটা মুভির ডিভিডি বিক্রিডিসিশন মেকিং এর উপর একটা বই পড়ছি । অনেক দিন ধরে কিছু একটা কেনার জন্য টাকা জমাচ্ছ , হঠাত একদিন দোকানে গিয়ে দেখলে তোমার পছন্দের একটা মুভির ডিভিডি বিক্রি হচ্ছে যেটা অনেকদিন ধরে তুমি কিনতে চাইছিলে । জমানো টাকা থেকে নিয়ে কিনে ফেলবে ? নাকি ঐ ডিভিডি কেনার টাকা দিয়েই অন্য কিছু কিনবে ? এক কথায়, Opportunity Cost. আম্মুর থেকে টাকা নিয়ে বেঙ্গল পাবলিকেশন্সের কিছু বই কেনার অভিপ্রায়ে পাঠক সমাবেশে গিয়ে আমার ঠিক অমনই একটা Opportunity Cost যাচাইয়ের মুখোমুখি হতে হয়েছিল। বইমেলার শেষ দিন বেঙ্গল পাবলিকেশন্সের চমৎকার কিছু বই দেখে এসেছিলাম, ওদের লিটারারি এবং কালচারাল ওয়ার্কের উপর পাবলিকেশন্স গুলো আমাকে সত্যিই মুগ্ধ করেছিল । কিন্তু সেদিন ওদের কোন বই কেনার মত এমাউন্ট আমার কাছে ছিল না । পাঠক সমাবেশে গিয়ে বেঙ্গল পাবলিকেশন্সের কর্নারে গিয়ে বই সিলেক্ট করতে করতে দেখি আমার দীর্ঘ প্রতীক্ষার ' আদম সুরত' এর ডিভিডি টা চমৎকার তাকে রাখা । ১০০০ টাকা দিয়ে ডিভিডি টা নিব নাকি ১০০০ টাকা দিয়ে দুটো বই নিব !? শেষ মেশ দুটো (২>১) বইয়ের পাল্লা ভারী মনে হওয়ায় এই বইখানা আরেকটি বইয়ের সঙ্গে করে আমার ঘরে এলেন। এবং Opportunity Cost হিসেবে আদম সুরত কে হারিয়ে , আজ বাসে বসে যখন বইয়ের শেষ পাতাখানি পড়ে ফেললাম তখন মনে হল, ' নাহ, কোন খেদ নেই। আদম সুরত অন্য সময় হবে খন।'
শঙ্করলাল ভট্টাচার্যের লেখার চমৎকার মুন্সিয়ানায় দুই অসাধারণ সেতার বাদক পণ্ডিত রবি শঙ্কর আর ওস্তাদ বিলায়েত খাঁর জীবন এত অসাধারণ ভাবে ফুটে উঠেছে , মনে হচ্ছিল দুজন সামনে বসে বৈঠকে তাঁদের গল্প করে যাচ্ছেন। আমি মূলত নন ফিকশন , বায়োগ্রাফিক্যালের ভক্ত । লেখার এই মুন্সিয়ানা আমাকে সত্যিই অভিভূত করে। একজন বায়োগ্র্যাফিক্যাল লেখকের দায়িত্ব অনেক। যাকে নিয়ে লিখছ সেই মানুষটাকে গভীরভাবে জানা, তাঁর কাজ, জীবন মরমে উপলব্ধি করা। ৩০-৪০ টা বই পড়ে কম্পাইল করে ফেললেই বায়োগ্র্যাফিক্যাল লেখক হওয়া যায় না!

Every time I hear Fredo Viola's "The Sad Song", it reminds me of the sky getting locked in Chris McCandless's (Emile Hirsch) eyes for one last time in the final scene of the movie. This is a story about a boy who lived by his morals, ethics & died with it. A stubborn idealism in the face of endemic idiocy of mainstream life, Tolstoyan renunciation, self discipline & abstention. The story depicts the grip wilderness has on the American imagination, the allure high-risk activities hold for young men of a certain mind, the complicated, highly charged bond that exists between fathers and sons.
Jack London & Tolstoy's literary works how deeply infatuated Chris that he started living with those ideals while in reality both the writers were quite far away from the ideals they set in their works. I don't know if this great Alaska Odyssey answered all the questions he had ! But he dared to carry into effect his dreams which most of the people cannot or do not.

কৃষ্ণনগরের নাগরিকদের মনে সেইসময়ে যে সহজ হাস্য রসিকতার স্বতঃস্ফূর্ততা ছিল তা পড়ে মানুষের সরল জীবনের কথা চিন্তা করে মন্দ লাগে না । লেখকের সাহিত্য জীবনে ক্রমপ্রবেশ , বিভিন্ন স্থানে তাদের বসতি , বিলাত ভ্রমণের কতিপয় দিক উঠে এসেছে।
শেষের দিকে এই যে সংসার জীবন পরিবার আত্মীয় বন্ধুদের নিয়ে একসময় যে দূরত্ব তৈরি হয় , এক এক করে চলে যায় তার একটা মৃদু ছবি জীবনের পরিপক্ব থিতু দিনগুলোরও পরিণতি ~ ...more
