Actual Rating: 4.5 stars (Note: I Beta-read a copy of this book and changes were made ever since)
I am not going to post this on my blog because this is not the last version of the book, I got to beta-read the book but I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to see what the final result will be after the modifications and edits it will get!
I like things that are challenging, I enjoy multiple POVs books but I know it is very hard to give a unique voice and distinct characterization to each character. The second challenging thing is the grimdark fantasy genre, it is one of my favorite genres, I think it is a tricky genre to write because while it is easy to write gruesome things, it is hard to make me feel anything if I don't care about the characters. This book is an adult grimdark/ high fantasy book with multiple POVs and it really does an amazing job at hitting the right balance.
While I think it is a character-driven book with awesome characters, I also enjoyed the plot very much and there were many moments that made me go WTF is happening! The author knows what he is doing with the characters, and although he apparently likes his characters, he does not hold back and we see all different sides of them!
"On Mooncrest, everyone was equal, men and women were trained and treated as part of the same tribe and were free to pursue their passions based on their innate abilities and unique talents, not their sex. How could these men think they stood any chance of winning the day if they refused to work together with the entire force? She would not be told not to fight for her Ilanyx—she would be in the fray at any cost."
The world-building is on the same level of greatness, there was a mix of different species of creatures, there were mythologies and gods, there was cool magic and it also had a fair share of action scenes!
If I am going to criticize something and what is preventing me from going with that full 5 stars is that there were minor places in the story with inf0-dumping and the places got a bit confusing for me. I think it is a bit early to judge it as I know this is only a draft and it is getting professionally edited.
Summary: This is a start of what I think will be a great series with good prose, very realistic characters, a dark story line and great twists. I highly recommend for fans of the genre! ...more

I am always reading and trying new things and I decided that my last 2020 read will be something new for me!
Some reads are not meant to be very deep and meaningful and are just supposed to be fun, for me Him was one of those reads which was smutty, naughty and a loads lots of fun. It is also cheesy but I enjoyed it. I needed some distraction and I think this book provided just that.
I am planning to read book 2 in 2021 when I am in the mood again!

There are many different reasons that makes us as readers read a book. For me there were three main reasons that made me read this one: The gorgeous art cover, the blurb line and all the glowing reviews this was getting from all my friends here at GR. There was no way I was not gonna like this, right??!!!
It turns out I was wrong because I expected something and got something else completely. The book has a perfect opening line:
I was seven years old the first time my uncle poisoned me...
Mix this with the name of the series (Poison Wars) and I thought it is something more action-packed, something with a unique world-building and all kind of poisons and that we will have a magic system based on poisons! I don't know where I got that from but those were my expectations that were never met.
The reality? This reads more like historical fantasy, there is no magic in this one. The second line makes the first line kind of underwhelming and there are no poison wars, I read 40% and there were merely exciting poisons there. Every Chapter is preceded by a description of a plant and it is poisonous characteristics and how it can be traced. To be honest, it all sounds the same and it gave me a through back to the days when I was studying pharmacology and barely recognizing drugs or identifying the difference between Alprazolam and Lorazepam for example!
The writing was slow and very descriptive and for some reason, this style does not usually work for me! The two point of views sounded exactly the same to me and I kept confusing between Jovan and Kalina and I was bored reading both anyway!
Summary: I think my expectations made my experience with this one very underwhelming. I thought it would be something else. I was mostly bored reading this so I decided to DNF it! Most of my friends enjoyed it so there is no reason that you may not too! ...more

DNF @25% I really tried but I couldn't get into it after reading quarter of the book. IVirginia's Pick for my 10 readers, 10 recommendations challenge!
DNF @25% I really tried but I couldn't get into it after reading quarter of the book. I felt like I could push through the book and finish it but I can't do that to a 6-books series. It just felt too generic and like things I have already read before. This was written many years ago and I believe if I read it then I would have liked it but currently I am not planning to continue it anytime soon. ...more
I am in the mood for more non fiction lately, so I decided to read the books of Ali's book club. I wanted to read a book on habits for a long time nowI am in the mood for more non fiction lately, so I decided to read the books of Ali's book club. I wanted to read a book on habits for a long time now and Atomic Habits met all those criteria.
I am not gonna elaborate a lot since it is a well known book and there are a lot of YouTube videos that summed it up better than I can ever do including Abdaal's video here:
Like all non-fiction books, I found most of the information in the book to be logical but the way it was written and ordered was pretty good. I found it engaging, easy to read and scientific. I enjoy it when authors provide data through real life stories and there was a lot of that here.
The book mostly discusses 4 laws to get into a habit or get out of one. These are: Make it Obvious, Make it Attractive, Make it Easy, Make it Satisfying. And if you inverse those you get a way to lose bad habits. A very intriguing read!...more
I did not know there was a Superhero named Swamp Thing by DC. I was excited to get to know him through a comic book and it is Actual Rating: 2.5 Stars
I did not know there was a Superhero named Swamp Thing by DC. I was excited to get to know him through a comic book and it is written by Stiefvater! I think Stiefvater's endings don't work for me, the books always seem trying too hard to sound deep and complicated but simplicity would have been a better thing here.
The story here is about two twins and it is the origin story of Swamp Thing, I think the story here was not new, I have seen the different twins trope in TV series, in anime, in books and in everywhere and it always seem to go in the same direction which made it underwhelming here.
The art style is meh, I find myself critical when it comes to art styles reading this kind of books, just because some books makes me feel like a lot of effort has been put into them and some of them feel like quick drawings to kill some time and I think you can guess which one I thought it was here.
I found the whole read very average and it did not add much to my reading experience. The Google images of Swamp Thing looks very cool and I always liked plants but this seemed too tamed down to impress a specific type of readers. ...more

~DNF @40%~
Jessica I am so sorry I couldn't do it and continue this one. To be fair to this book, I am going to DNF it but I am not gonna rate it. When Jessica chose this for my challenge, I was a bit hesitant because it sounded like something out of comfort zone, I read books across all genres so I said why not, I need to try new things.
I started the book and I finished 40% of it but I couldn't get into the story as much as I wanted to, I didn't hate the characters but I didn't care about them. I agree with many reviews saying that Meg was a Mary Sue kind of character who everybody like. I didn't feel the drama and tension between the characters given that this should be a romance subgenre too but I can see what will happen and after checking the reviews for later books, I think the romance is very underwhelming when it all ends in a kiss!
The reason I did not finish this is because I won't finish the series anyway so what was the point of finishing something I did not care much about. I could have pushed myself and finished this in other words, but I thought I'd rather use my limited time to read something I am enjoying.
I like the idea of a blood prophet but other than that, there were a lot of tropes and things I already read before. Once again, I don't think it is a bad book or a bad series, It is just not for me!...more
