Each of the women from "Zulu" have settled into very different lives - all of them a stark contrast from the life of a soldier. I especially like the idea of a disgraced soldier trying to settle in an Amish community.
Things all start coming to a head near the end as the characters begin to converge and realise they all have a problem.
This book raises more questions than it answers - as you would expect from a pilot episode. I'm a fan of these novella-serial-reads-like-a-tv-show kind of books, and this one has a particularly interesting premise. I'll certainly be reading this series....more

Flight of the Angels is a fast-paced science fiction action adventure. It follows the exploits of the 714th Fighter Squad - The Angels. In a futuristic dystopia where Christianity is all but outlawed they are tasked with protecting a secret colony on a world in deep space.
The book also follows a young ambitious business man on Earth who is trying to unravel a mystery that could make or break his career. As he digs deeper he uncovers a conspiracy that could spell doom for not only the Angel's colony, but every Christian in the galaxy.
Despite this book having a large cast I never had any great trouble separate characters from one another. A big part of the fun of reading this book was getting to hang out with these people. It looks like the father and son authors are planning future installments, which is great because I'd like to continue spending time with these characters.
There are a couple of mysteries that were not fully explained in the novel, and I found myself wanting more exploration of the villain's motivations. I assume the authors plan to further explore these ideas in the sequel.
I thoroughly enjoyed Flight of the Angels and look forward to more....more

There are three protagonists, each of which is well-developed with interesting back-story and unique personalities. I really liked these characters and enjoyed the interactions between them.
The plot puts an interesting new twist on the super-hero genre. The mythology of the story, build upon Christian theology, does not feel contrived.
There are some very emotional scenes in this book which moved me. There is a lot of heart behind the action.
This book was told in first-person multiple point-of-view. This was quite a bold move on the part of the author. I'll be honest, I much prefer third-person for multiple POV, but I was usually able to figure out the viewpoint character in each scene without too much effort.
I am certainly looking forward to more of The Assigned. ...more

It is quite evident early on that this is a planet other than earth. The world is almost completely covered in water. There are seven moons. Most people live in floating cities constructed by a special light-weight metal, held up by powerful engines.
Jarden and his father are airmen. They travel the planet in an airship gathering and selling scrap from salvaged vessels. It is dangerous work (given the presence of dangerous sea creatures and pirates) but they love it.
Early in the story Jarden loses his father. He and a pirate girl named Rowella are thrust into each others lives. Initially blood enemies, they began to gain a respect for each other. I enjoyed the chemistry of their relationship.
This book has a lot of thrills. There is danger at every turn. This is a difficult world to live on. Jarden must rise to many challenges if he is to survive, especially when he falls into the hands of the pirates of Aireon.
I spent a lot of this book wondering about the setting. How did they all get there. Why are they living on another planet but with a level of technology that would not have allowed them to travel there. This is all kept a mystery for quite some time, which just adds to the fun.
This was a fun roaring adventure with a satisfying conclusion. I look forward to following these characters through future adventures.

The story opens with Benaiah, one of David's soldiers, getting into a fight with a lion. These opening chapters were especially thrilling. We get a gritty and immersive look into ancient Israel.
The pace seems to drag just slightly during the first half of the second act, as the author introduces a larger cast of characters, but then from the the midpoint onward things heat up toward an exciting conclusion.
Cliff Graham did a great job of transporting us into the past and showing us what life was like in David's rag-tag band of warriors. This feels like a good origin story about a man who we know is on his way to a great destiny.
In amongst all of the action and excitement, there is a meaningful character arc and growth.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series....more
